I gotta criticize this part of the end of HL Alyx: https://youtu.be/jouEppnR_qU?t=1985

I spent 10 minutes just walking around in circles stuck here, only to finally close the game, look up a walkthrough, and see the player get stuck for the exact same 10 minutes and try the same things I did in vain, only to realize you're supposed to PUSH UP THE CEILING so you can crawl under it, something the game has never had you do and is extremely unclear that you're capable of doing. Its a big hunk of metal, all kinds of poo poo has just crashed down around you, there's zero indication that THIS piece of metal is something you can grab and push up to crawl under.

Surprisingly un-intuitive level design from Valve.
This took me a while too. Eventually I figured it out by following the wires.

I could even tell exactly where they wanted me to go. But I sat there trying to crouch and teleport under for a long time, then went and tried to find a way around, and back and forth for a long time. It doesn't seem clear you can actually move the metal object to duck UNDER it. That's never happened anywhere else in the game.

Oh well, past it now. Just seems like exactly the kind of thing Valve would think of fixing.

The whole Facebook thing really killed any interest I have in Oculus' headsets at this point, real god drat shame since this headset looks amazing outside of that.

I hope Valve gets into the Wireless VR headset market to be honest.

I love how the game uses a bunch of things in the level design that clue you in to where the enemies will come from so eventually you’re just blasting them before you even see them.

I honestly thought Facebook was ubiquitous enough that wouldn't be much of a dealbreaker, to the point where like hiring agencies and background checks would think it a red flag if you didn't have a profile. But I mean can't you just make a Joe Fakenamerson account and call it good?

IDK I just linked it without thinking of it because that's how 90% of poo poo works in cyberpunk hellworld anyway.

I guess I will have to figure out how it's gonna work for setting up extra profiles/libraries for the kids.

Facebook builds a profile of you even if you don't have an account. If you create a fake account, they'll know it isn't you.

I instapreordered the Quest 2 and a battery elite strap. It seems to solve my only few issues with the Quest, which I use every single day to work out and have lost a bunch of weight using. The only question is if the elite strap fits my big head - I hear it has a suprising small max size, but I'm happy to just return it if it's no good.

edit: I ordered from Amazon - my experience preordering the Quest 1 directly from Oculus was not good at all.

And to be clear, if they think you're not a real person they will lock your account until you provide them with ID to prove you exist

That means if you buy your Oculus games on a burner Facebook account you risk losing all your purchases

Jezus the amount of FUD in here is ridiculous

It is literally trivial to create a fake account in FB

FB is not a government entity, it cannot access centralised records to cross-check anything. My FB account has both names that are blatantly not real - how did this happen? - a drivers license, a scanner and photoshop. There is no "link" to me, i blurred out my address and any other identifiable information on the license and they still accepted it.

Hell i probably couldve Googled for a funny license pic, created an account, sent them that and they would have accepted that too

If you re worried that they might delete your account then what makes a real-name account so secure? The same fakeable ID?

I mean yeah i get it, lovely company. But lol if the only reason youre holding out on a Quest is because of this poo poo

Are you guys getting the 64 or 256 gb versions of the Quest 2? I'm coming from a Rift S myself, and I'm not sure how much storage space I should go for. I'm leaning towards the larger size, thinking I might be able to load some movies on it for long plane trips (if that's a thing?)

Yeah I don't like Facebook but the data from using Oculus seems of very low value to me and they've been explicit in what their goals are with Oculus: obsoleting offices, which I am 100% for, and COVID is proving is actually realistic while at the same time demonstrating the limitations of traditional videoconferencing which FBRL has already spent a bunch of time researching. The Quest 2 is definitely being sold at a major loss too, so it's not like you're giving them any profit. But I totally understand if Facebook is a bridge too far, no-one posting in the Something Awful Games forum would want to play online games with their real name notionally there, even if Facebook lets you pick a handle and everything the same as any other console. They're a bad company and if you want to take a stand then I support you, but my feeling is getting a Quest moves Facebook's attention into the eliminating offices (with the corresponding massive environmental and health benefits) and away from harvesting everyone's data.

And yes they probably do want to harvest everyone's data when they move their offices to the metaverse, but the thing is once they've used their bulk and their billions to gain momentum committing to it, their division will be so slow that they'll be easy to disrupt by a fast follower who does care about privacy. That's my rationalisation, anyway, there are others available.

256 for me. The 64 is plenty for the Quest 1, but more textures usually means more storage. Also if you want to put a bunch of media on it and go traveling that can fill up, which yes is totally a thing and is pretty great, being able not to be where you have to be is a goddamn superpower

No, but it proves the FB account thing is not the big hurdle its being made out to be. Whether you choose to use that account for genuine social interaction or just to use a VR device doesnt really matter.

Any data that you think can be gleaned from you being friends with User 7743278 and User 9932667 is rendered useless by HUGH JANUS not actually existing.

Aside from all those neat little data points directing to IP addresses at your physical location, along with whatever else they might have to the tune of whatever you're using to pay for Oculus games with.

Do I have to make them individual facebook accounts or can I have multiple profiles under mine? I'm fine with having to buy the title multiple times I just want to know how that works.

Right, so the logical conclusion of this argument is that FB already *knows* these accounts are not real names..... yet does not delete them.

Thats one argument against Quest ownership shot down.

If your barrier to Quest ownership is "i dont want my name on FB", - you can.

They will. Yours aren't deleted because they're actually being used for Facebook, you just think you're somehow evading the system with a pseudonym (you're not, lol). A proper fake Facebook account would be one that just sits doing nothing except accumulating Oculus game purchases, and that can get dinged because Facebook can't make a link between those purchases and a Facebook user acting like a real person.

I have no reason to think im some weird outlier who just happens to know an overly large group of people who dont use their real names on FB.

Go and look through the member list of any large FB group and tell me there arent a bunch of names that arent real. This is not edge-case stuff.

Do a search for blatantly obvious fake-name accounts - the aforementioned Hugh Janus, Busta Gut, etc etc - you will be scrolling through accounts that are clearly not bots for pages.

I'm fine with buying extra copies of the games (fortunately their favorite is completely free) for the additional headsets so we can play together, just not sure how it will work with the Facebook requirement.
