I mean we can all hope that someone else makes a vr headset that doesn't cost a thousand bucks plus an entire high end gaming PC, but until then vr does not exist in any way that matters outside of what Facebook is making as far as 99% of consumers are concerned

I get the reluctance mostly due to the fact that you have to make a literal facebook account with your name on it (in theory) . That's a really tough pill to swallow if the most salient facebook thing to you is the cambridge anlytica scandal.

something cool I just learned: you can upload custom quest homes into your headset via sidequest

It's fair enough though if people don't want to directly financially support Facebook and I get the principle although for me it feels unevenly applied given how evil literally every major tech company is.

It is unevenly applied, and that's OK. We aren't really left with any pro-social ways to be consistently principled so people will pick and choose where to take their stands, and as long as we're not dicks about it that's at least a little better than just caving on all fronts.

Personally I caved on the Quest front, but I still feel bad about it and won't fault anyone for holding out. And I had to RMA the dumb thing for a strip of dead pixels as soon as it arrived - another week or so of shipping a replacement to me now before I get to check out RE4.

Quest v37
https://www.oculus.com/blog/apple-magic-keyboard-support-link-sharing-an-organized-home-and-more-in-latest-quest-software-update/
https://support.oculus.com/release-notes/

quote:

App Library

Oculus first party apps are no longer pinned to the top of your App Library. Instead, you can control the order of your apps through your App Library’s sort + filter settings.

Link Sharpening+

If it looks like your view in VR with Link is a little bit clearer, you’re right. We’ve improved the Link Sharpening algorithm for better visual clarity.

Stationary Guardian

Stationary Guardian now uses Passthrough. When you move toward the edge of your Stationary Guardian, you won’t see the boundary outlines. Instead, Passthrough will fade in to show your real-life surroundings.

Horizon Home

To help you explore your Horizon Home, you can now teleport to different designated areas in your Home environment.
Simply hide the Universal Menu by pressing the Oculus button, and press your controller thumbstick forward to see a set of potential hotspots. Then aim at one of the hotspots and release the thumbstick to teleport.
With the Universal Menu hidden, you can also press the thumbstick left or right to rotate in place.

Diagonal Resize

To better control your VR workspace, you can now resize your app windows to different heights and widths. Initially, this will be supported in Browser, Oculus TV, and Files as well as some 2D multitasking apps currently available on Quest.

Display Bar

To provide more flexibility in how 2D apps are displayed, you can now change the distance, scale, and rotation of your 2D app panels by using the Display Bar to switch between Tablet and Desktop modes.
To switch between panel types, select and hold the Display Bar under the center panel, then drag the bar up or down.
We’re also making Browser tabs a bit smarter as part of this update. When you move between Desktop and Tablet modes, your Browser tabs will now consolidate into a single window to help keep your workspace neat and organized.

Tracked Keyboard Selection

In v28, we made it possible to not just pair but see Logitech’s K830 keyboard in VR. Now we’re also adding support for the Apple Magic Keyboard on Quest 2.
You can pair your Apple Magic Keyboard with your headset under the Experimental Features panel in Settings. You’ll also need to enable hand tracking (if you haven’t already) which can be done under the Hands and Controllers settings menu.

Share to Headset

If you’ve ever been browsing a made-for-VR art gallery on your phone and wished for a more immersive experience, we have you covered. In our latest sharing enhancement you’ll now be able to send a link directly from your phone to your Quest via the Oculus App, making that 3D view actually feel like you’re there.
To do this, first make sure your headset is turned on and Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Then, open a website on your phone, click Share, choose the Oculus App → Open Now, select your headset, and it’ll automatically open in Browser when you put your headset on.
Please note: Currently this is only available on Android but will be coming to iOS soon.

Improved Quick Actions Menu

Accomplish the basics quicker without needing controllers. You can now use a pinch gesture with your hands to bring up a quick action menu. This allows you to quickly do things like take a screenshot, activate voice commands and more.
To bring up the quick action menu, position your palm in front of your face and pinch with your thumb and index finger.

Redesigned Explore Page

We’ve redesigned your Explore page to make it easier to find the experiences that you care about. To do this, we’ve made the following updates:
Adding cards that make it easier to find your friends.
Updating sections so you can discover the games, apps, and content that you care about.

Controller Settings

We’re adding the ability to adjust your Touch controller settings not only to give power users more options, but also to improve accessibility and address issues that may arise with wear and tear.
The most recent setting addition for v37 is the ability to adjust the thumbstick center dead zone, as well as the thumbstick range. You can make these adjustments from the Experimental Settings section within the settings panel.

Count me in as one of those who took the facebook requirement as a hard dealbreaker for the Quest 2. Literally is the one thing stopping me from getting it + even more troubling to me are all the reports I've heard of them banning you for making a fake account just for it. FUUUUUUUUCK THAT. Was gonna get the Index but went with the HP Reverb G2 instead and so far I think I made the right choice. I wish I could play RE4 tho. Hoping that it's only a timed exclusive.

It is pretty funny to me that RE7 and RE4 in VR are games in the same franchise but are hard-locked to their respective headsets. Add RE2 and RE3 to that as well if you include their VR mods (which requires a gaming PC).

I get half!!
I need to talk about how incredible Blaston is. It's really sent my VR experience from "this is neat" to "this is mindblowingly cool".

It's a competitive 1v1 game where you and an opponent stand on equally spaced platforms and shoot guns at each other. Let's talk about why it's so good.

3D space and physicality are an inherent part of the game-- You need to use your body both to dodge and get in good shots. In the course of a single match I will often run, sidestep, kneel, duck, pivot, and even crawl or shuffle on my knees. Jumping is occasional effective, but less common. You might think this only applies to defensive, but it very much applies to offense as well. For example, at the edge of your platform is a barrier, and if you stick your head over it, you will take a ton of continuous damage; however, this does not apply to your body, so walking straight up to the front of the barrier, leaning your head back, and extending your arm forward will allow you to half the distance your bullets have to travel to hit your opponent. When an opponent hides behind a shield, you very much need to get in the right position to shoot around it. Lobbing cluster grenades so they explode shrapnel in the correct position over 3D space is a skill on it's own. So is shooting down said grenade before they go off. When I am matched with an equally skilled player, I am usually out of breath by the end of the 2 rounds.

Even if the game was just mindless action, it would still be fun, but what really elevates Blaston is the amount of depth and strategy going on under the hood. There are 29 different guns/grenades in the game and their properties matter. The different types of bullets have different hitpoints, sizes, speeds, and weight. These factors need to be considered when choosing how to use the gun offensively or defensively. There is a gun that shoots giant slow moving purple orbs. You can use it offensively to obscure the enemies' view and constrict their space on their platform. Or because of the very high HP of the orb, you can use it defensively to block incoming bullet spam. Grenades are strong, but can be shot down by a single bullet before they detonate. There are 3 guns that allow you to curve your bullets based on swing speed, angle, pull back-- you can max a small, tight fast slight curve or a slow, long distance, arc or anything between. You can curve bullets vertically to drop behind shields. These guns are quite challenging to use and reward practice and skill. Some guns have projectiles that ignore object collision-- great for offensive, but literally useless for defence. Other guns can be fired up like a mortar. There are 3 different types of shields that have different properties and a tether weapon where you latch onto it and it powers up the gun in your other hand. Guns even have their own health bars, which affects how many hits they can take from bullets if you throw the gun in front of you to block a bullet, only to grab it again to use it.

At any given time you to take 6 guns into a match. Guns have different spawn speeds, so you need to balance that. If you choose 6 guns with long spawn timers, you are going to find yourself completely out of weapons and just sitting around waiting. If you start to read or watch videos of the top players, they have builds with combos based on the gun combinations.

I love competitive games. I played way too many MOBAs and RTS games. I find this game sucking me in the same way. The premise is simple, but there is significant depth and strategy lurking under the surface. If you haven't tried this yet, I highly highly recommend it. This is the first game that has genuinely wow'ed me (although I haven't played Alyx yet). I can't even imagine what VR games are going to be like in 5-10 years.

I legit think it's amazing. I feel like a 7 year old who just got super nintendo. I do think many people passed it up, because the matchmaking is not nearly as filled as I would like. If you don't connect to a human, it puts you with a bot, and the ratio of bot to human matches is like 60:40 right now.

Although I think the game has been out over a year and I'm just starting, so I hope as I move up the rank ladder, I will get mostly humans.

It doesn't happen nearly as much any more, usually when it happens it's people who "deleted" their accounts making a new one under the same name which gets flagged because accounts are never truly deleted. Also a lot of people get flagged when there's a big rush of new accounts, most notably during the US election in 2020 and I wouldn't be surprised if some people got banned from making accounts over Christmas. It's basically the nightmare of automatic moderation, I doubt any actual humans there give a poo poo if you're making a throwaway account just for the Quest. Hopefully this whole thing goes away when they transition to the Meta account, still the same poo poo company but at least not tied to their shittest site.

If you want a $299 all in one headset, then right now, today, you need to interact with Facebook.

I hope that changes in the future, but that’s how it is today.

I think a competitor wouldn't need to be nearly as cheap as Q2 as long and it had the same features. Year ago when I was planning the purchase a Reverb G2 gave a stiff competition. The wire was a bigger deal breaker than the price, and I may not have bought the Q2 if I hadn't learned about Virtual Desktop from this thread.

At least in Pavlov it has an option to simulate a stock. It makes the aim jiggle WAY less of a problem.

Edit: Well, I gotta say the Quest 2 has a much, MUCH better onboarding experience than WMR/ReverbG2. The sound is surprisingly nice and the controllers feel a lot more comfortable.
