Okay so hooking up a quest to a PC for steam games:

I know I can plug it in via cable, or hook up by putting both the PC and the quest on the wireless. A couple of questions tho.

Does any 3.1 usb A to usb C work or do is there some proprietary horseshit that makes the more expensive oculus branded one required?

For the wireless option:

I'm not a madman so my PC is wired into the router, but I guess all I need is to have the wireless router in the first place and the quest can hook up through that with no more issues? I know wireless is always going to have some degree of delay that a cable wouldn't but does it work out fine for most games that aren't too finicky? Like I'd imagine the precision needed for a rhythm game like beat saber might matter, but do most of y'all just use the wireless function?

I just got my quest yesterday and played with it for a few hours and everything seemed fine. I stopped for the night and now this morning it won't turn on. Maybe the battery drained overnight? But when I plug it in to charge the little charging light isn't coming on.

Somewhere on the internet it says sometimes the charging light won't come on at all when your battery is REALLY dead, also I guess the cable/adapter it came with could be bad?

I have a spare cable coming today anyway, I bought a 20ft one to use the headset wired in if I felt like it, so I'll be able to test that when it gets here.

Is this something other people have experienced?

Well my Quest 2 is dead I think. Meta support had no answers so i think I just got a busted model. Can't get it to turn on, presumably because it has no charge. If it had charge but just wasn't working I should be able to get to the boot menu, but the charging light isn't even on.

Tried a couple chargers so I think I'm just SOL.

Thankfully I literally just bought it so it's more a hassle of going through support than it going to actually cost me any money. Now the question is do I go through meta support or just go through amazon directly. I feel like amazon would do it faster.

The Quest battery will definitely drain on standby. I know that if I disconnect mine and go to turn it on a week later with it just having been sitting there, it's pretty much guaranteed to be dead. In fact [checks unit], yup mine is drained as we speak (although I get a battery dead icon in the headset itself so it's better than normal).

Hopefully your unit is not kaput. There's no dust in the usb-c port or anything like that?

It is unfortunately very dead. I've already started the amazon return process. Unfortunately I can't get a new one on amazon because they're out of stock because of the price hike lol. Luckily best buy still had one so I just bought that instead.

I could have gone through meta support directly but I was worried about getting the run around and having them spend weeks waiting to ship it back and forth and then try and 'fix' it instead of just giving me a new one right away.

silly question, did you try holding down the power button for about 3 seconds to turn it on

Yeah, and also the power+volume button to get it to boot into safe mode and stuff too, just completely unresponsive.

Not related to VR but I can't believe NMS though it would be a good idea to just plunk the player down on a hostile planet where you will literally die in minutes to the elements as a tutorial. Better not take any time to read the text or look at your inventory, you're dying fuckwit.

I never finished outer wilds but I think I'll give it another go in VR. I got burned out by the timer. I started to feel like I was always in a race to solve a puzzle before I lost access to it.

So I've bought some games on steam but I kinda wanted to get a game on the quest itself just to have somethign I could show friends/relatives by bringing the quest to somebody's house. I'm not gonna drag my whole pc around to show people, so something standalone would be neat for that.

Whats a good game that would kinda show off the VR stuff in a cool way and is probably just like, a handful of minigames or some other 10 minute experience?

It could be a 'real' game too, like how beat saber might count as a cool 5 minute tech demo but is also something you can sink your teeth into. It can't be beat saber tho because I already own it on steam.

If you're playing on PC with a Quest then don't feel that you have to buy things on Steam out of habit, crossplay is a seriously good feature and you'll probably have some 30% discount codes for the Oculus store thrown at you occasionally to sweeten the deal.

But my cheevos.

Woah you can get presescription lenses to put in the headset itself? That owns I'll have to get some.

most of the time I just wear glasses, and I can't see without them, the quest doesn't ~quite~ fit over my glasses comfortably though.

I use contacts for doing physical activities outside or w/e else, so I've been putting in my contacts to use the quest. It's not a big deal to get up and go to the bathroom to put contacts in but it if I could just fit some lenses into the quest itself that would own.

Agent355

Is there a particular company people recommend? I don't have my actual paper prescription but i should be able to just pull the numbers of my contact boxes.

Agent355

Ugh but then they're going to want me to do another eye exam since it's an old prescription and then I have to come up with money for that.

Life is hard.

Agent355
Jul 26, 2011

Maybe but the exam was definitely like 8 years ago or something, we'll see if they just send it over or if they try and get me to go in for another exam or w/e. I don't think my prescription has changed either way.

Well aside from that, is there a company people recommend over any other for this?

I just ordered some for 70 bux. I just gave them the numbers I pulled off my contacts rather than sending an actual prescription. Though I had to pay some extra money for having such a heavy subscription (aka thicker lenses).

I have trouble navigating menus in VR sometimes, I get alot of wiggly motions when I'm trying to point at buttons on the UI and pulling the trigger as 'confirm' feels awkard.

Is there any tricks or settings for helping with that? It's not so bad in game sicne they tend to make the buttons really big, but navigating through games in the virtual desktop can be rough.

I'm surprised there are so few beat saber songs included with the game. I know i can pretty easily just go mod in more, and I will, but still it's like 25 songs or something, thats so small!

E: also wow hey got adding songs to the game so easy a .exe will install the base tools for you and then a loving menu in game can be used to browse and download poo poo instantly. Modders doing some loving work for this game. When I was your age I had to open up file explorer and manually drag and drop things to the right spot!

It says 'keep out of sunlight' on the stickers you have to remove from the lenses before you can use the quest. It's pretty hard to miss.

They're basically magnifying lenses that will absolute gently caress up the screens if you let sunlight beam directly into them.

Index users, and/or wired quest users, how annoying is it having a cable dangling from your face the whole time? Does it ultimately not affect much or do you find it limits your movement pretty heavily?

Agent355

I thought about a pulley system, I'm a turbonerd so I don't care about the optics, but I have really really high ceilings so it wouldn't work.

Agent355

I feel like I'd be mostly concerned with the cable hitting my arms when I'm trying to move around? Lots of games don't require rotation at all, like beat saber for instance, and I don't mind being a little aware that I'm stepping on some loops of cable at my feet.

I'm picturing it like, coiling around my legs or getting caught on my arms as I play though.

I ordered mine from best buy and I don't think I got a refurb. At least it had the stickers on the lenses. But maybe I did, who knows, I'm not that observant.

HL2 is going to have the Aliens problem. Which is to say that it set so many standards that were copied after it's release that it feels really basic and boilerplate now.

Agent355
Jul 26, 2011

Related, but I haven't used a two handed gun in any VR game. But I've definitely noticed in HL:A that my aim is very wiggly.

Now alot of this is that I'm just not that steady handed anyway, but the physical weight of a firearm does make the wiggly somewhat lessened. I can do target shooting just fine in real life but doing anything other than very carefully and deliberately aiming in HL:A is p hard.

I feel pretty 'there' with VR. I mean I'm not smelling the salt air when I play the pirate cove in walkabout, but my brain is definitely going 'wow I'm in a real 3d space that behaves roughly how it should'. Such that looking over the edge of a building will make me afraid of heights. That seems p good to me?

Agent355

Does it take much computer juice to mirror the screen onto a monitor with PCVR?

It defaults to showing the game on the PC and I didn't know if I could eek out some better performance by minimizing that screen or not. Or maybe there is a setting that would stop it from automatically launching like that.

There are a few options on the market so I'll ask here.

Y'all have a preferred battery pack and strap for the quest 2?

I'm starting to feel like I want to play it for longer than the 90-120 minutes I get off the basic battery, and the basic strap is ~fine~ but not very stable/comfortable. I'm sure there are some third party options or maybe official peripherals that are better.

Does anybody else have problems with half-life: alyx running on a quest? It works, don't get me wrong, but most of the time the first time I launch it in a given session the textures won't load in right and I have to quit and re-launch to get it to fix itself. I've never gotten past the main menu without the game warning me about low gpu memory or w/e, despite being over the recommended specs. And I've had steamVR (or air link) crash more often in that game than any other. Feels like I can't play it for an hour before I start seeing the stuttering and stuff that comes with the quest trying to launch both steam vr and oculus home at the same time for some reason.

It doesn't happen with any of the other steamVR games I've played, so I don't know if it's specific to alyx or if this is just an intermittent problem and I've only seen it in the one game so far.

I ordered the m2 plus somebody mentioned when I asked about it a few days ago, it just got in today. I just leave it on my desk. I might try and find a method to hang it at some point but for now the desk is fine. It's a bit chunky but I already had controllers and headsets and wires on my desk anyway so it's just one more thing.

Maybe I have a problem.

Do you need to buy virtual desktop through the quest itself to use it?

Agent355

Alright, I'll check that out, thanks. I've definitely had the experience where suddenly games just die and their framerate explodes while in steamVR and i look down at my hands and the quest is trying to show it's default hand models over the top of the steamVR ones.

Finally had to go get virtual desktop. Just too many problems with the default oculus software.

Namely I can't launch steam VR from the library, so I ahve to launch it from desktop mode and it is really hit or miss as to whether that will then make it launch on my headset, or just launch on desktop and sit there. And from there I can't figure out how to force the headset to put steamVR in focus or w/e the equivalent would be on a desktop.

Restarting the PC, restarting the oculus PC software, restarting the headset itself, only sometimes could get it to work, so gently caress it I"ll spend money to avoid this awful software.
