Hm seems like Borderlands 2 VR is dropping today on Steam, could be good! I can't tell if it includes all the DLC from BL2 but either way reviews for the PSVR version seemed decent.

So I took the risk and got Borderlands 2 VR and it seems.. pretty fun? I made it to level 5 in about an hour or so session and the gun fights were great honestly (and getting your first skill points up to level 5 is arguably the shittiest part of the game). I've seen a lot of complaints about the scale being off and the projection being weird but honestly it played really well and seemed like a solid port despite me setting a timer to be able to refund it.

Weird I would think nobody would test on the Vive Pro and that it'd have similar problems, guess I lucked out.

I did one of those Avengers experiences in VR recently. The kit was basically a backpack PC running a Vive but somehow they did individual finger tracking inside the game with no gloves or anything - anyone know how that's accomplished? Seemed like 90% accurate somehow!

Valve has gone on record saying a big part of the reason that they havent made a new half life game (3 or otherwise) is because the first two are looked at as absolute essential classics. They captured lightning in a bottle and they have publicly stated that they wont make another half life game until they're confident that they have it nailed to the quality of the first two.

What this DOESNT mean is "valve wont make a new half life unless its a clone of the first two", its about quality standards and industry impact. Yes, modern games do half life stuff better than half life did, but the impact of the games on release absolutely cannot be overstated. There was nothing like them.

Thats what they have said they want to recapture.
And yet they went on to make those episodes and didn't finish that either.

It is quite playable and accessible with a controller.

I decided to bust out Elite: Dangerous last night and refamiliarize myself with the controls as it's been a few years. Downloaded the Steam portion that enables VR and god drat it's so much better with the Index vs the OG Rift. I can actually read all menus and maps. It's still basically space trucker...in space! but the tutorials seem to have been updated and it's pretty user friendly now.

Edit- Looks like the new DLC is VR, too. Welp there goes my night.

The current DLC, Horizons, has VR support but the upcoming DLC will not at launch (which is next year).

Yeah some people keep claiming that in the Elite Dangerous thread which is nuts since E:D is like the poster child for incredible VR.

I don't know, I'm not going to go back through a 300 page thread trying to find it but it comes up now and then. I also think that VR is way more expensive and someone defending your purchase isn't that big of a deal to get worked up over.

I don't see it recommended a lot but I had an absolute blast with Borderlands 2 VR, including all of the DLC.

Oh wow same. The gun detail is great but the controls are worse than *every* other VR FPS out there.

drat this reminds me of modders who spend like 7 months on the gun models but don't work on the actual game.

Biggest problem right now is the optics for AR are really restrictive in FOV compared to where VR is at. Depending on how big of a ghost TV you want on your wall, and how far away it likely won't be possible to have it all in view.
Plus see-through AR can't show black so regular media is gonna be very odd to watch on it.

Alyx is fun but I definitely wish they leaned more into the Combine and the city over so much zombie stuff, it's way too dark and scary for most people and without that it'd be the killer intro to VR. It feels like they made a whole game about Ravenholm which was great but also confined to one area.

Also I should say great, not just fun; it's honestly the most polished for VR experience there is and mechanically very accessible, I just wish it was more accessible content-wise.

I swear I remember hearing about VR issues with AMD, either their GPUs or CPUs, I can't recall. Is that a thing? Am I hallucinating? And if not, did that ever get resolved?

I've had no issues with their CPUs, can't speak for the GPUs though.

Is VR these days less fiddly then it was around the days of the Vive launch? I have an original Vive, and was thinking about upgrading but my biggest issue was it was always a huge production to get going. I'd have to restart SteamVR multiple times, unplug/replug things, and generally just gently caress around. It made it no fun to use, since every session was preceded by 20m of computer fuckery.

I haven't used my existing headset in at least 1.5 years, is the Valve Index any better at not requiring tons of things?

Just for fun I plugged my existing headset in and got some HDCP errors that apparently point to some sort of cable fault. That was not a good reintroduction.

I just want to play the new Half Life without debugging it first.

I have an Index and there's none of that bullshit now, it's quite smooth. I've only had to replug cables when a cat slept on one, loosening it.

Haha whoops missed that, I'm just old and hate Youtube personalities - my bad.

Also one caveat, GTA VR does a weird trick where it renders frame A for your left eye then frame B for your right and and I found it very unsettling, it made me motion sick despite having an iron VR stomach usually.

trip report: AMD AGESA 1.2.0.1 Patch A, implemented in MSI beta bios 3/5/21.

This installed normally and did not do anything bad to my system that I am aware of. It also does not solve any problems, as far as I can tell: I can still only get the G2 to work if it's in the single "VR READY" USB-A slot with its adapter on, and I still have to force PCIe gen3 in BIOS or else I get lots of bullshit and bluescreens.
I believe AMD said the first AGESA addressing the USB and PCIe problems would be 1.2.0.2.

Gotta say trying out airlink with basically no discernible lag makes me think anyone with a headset that has to be plugged in during use is an absolute sucker. I’m still on my rift s at home and the cable is easily my biggest gripe. I would be so pissed if I dropped index money and was stuck with the cable after trying out a full wireless setup.

I would love a wireless Index but I would feel way more pissed supporting Facebook.
