Gonna take the Quest Pro on my flight to San Diego tomorrow just to see how many times it gets mistaken for this Apple thing.

Portland to San Diego, so I only need to bring one extra external battery

Pretty lol that the tethered Apple headset seems to have, at best, equivalent battery life to the Quest Pro. Get pucked, idiots

I think it’s very neat. If it was half the price I’d get one. At $3500 I will pass, and I’m an early adopting, glasses pushing, money burning, turbo nerd with no kids and a bunch of money, formerly employed at Apple.

If not me, then I’m left wondering who this is for.

They were internally projecting 500k units sold the first year and I was initially kinda impressed at such a realistic goal given the rumored price/features. That goal doesn’t seem very realistic at all now.

Also $3500 is actually higher than Tim’s usual “2x BoM” target.

I checked out some mass tech sites to see what the comment sections were saying about the reveal.

They’re oddly positive for the most part. Craziest thing is that I think it’s not so much Apple’s reality distortion field as it is the utter failure of the VR industry to properly market this poo poo. Tons of upvoted comments about how “the best PCVR headset is the Index for $1000 and it can’t do any of this”.

Also lots of “Quest 3 is dead” comments which are just :psyduck:

This Ben Lang guy got an Apple demo, thinks it’s pretty great, but more importantly says the FoV is similar to the Quest Pro

I am extremely skeptical about the text rendering

The bit about how good 3D movies look is interesting. 3D Blu-ray rips are very obviously low resolution in comparison to 6-8k VR180, so hopefully this implies Apple has been able to convince studios to release some remastered 3D titles.

Decided to get a refund on Pixel Ripped 1978; kind of a bummer since I really enjoyed PR 1995.

Landing an official Atari license actually ruined the game because they couldn’t make those dusty rear end relics remotely fun or visually interesting. I’m nostalgic for the Windows 3.1 Hot Dog theme, but it doesn’t mean I have any interest in paying 20 bucks for the 1993 Word Perfect middle school experience.

I also thought Dot's little 16 bit RPG world was cool and think that would genuinely make a good VR game, a traditional arpg in a pseudo-retro but 3d world modeled after 90s RPGs.

They (slightly) fleshed out the town in this one, which was nice because I enjoyed it in 95 as well.

Beyond the “pre-NES home console gameplay belongs in a museum” aspect, I really REALLY disliked the shift from the super charming “preteen in the 90s” storyline to “adult cubicle coder in the 70s”.

If you do end up picking it up, I’d be interested in reading your impressions because it sounds like we started in the same place and maybe I didn’t give it enough of a shot.

Wireless Tea For God in an empty garage is really kind of awesome, just a little PSA. ~21x21 space to work in, the game really makes use of the extra space.

I did it PCVR from Steam via wifi quest link but I see it's available as a quest native title as well.

There’s a “redirected walking” Quest apk floating around from years back (so it might not even work these days) that’s insanely trippy if you have that large of a play area. Might be worth checking out for the experience.

It’s just a tech demo (so no gameplay) but it almost imperceptibly curves a straight hallway so you end up walking in figure eights but it feels like you’re moving straight ahead the entire time. It actually hosed up my IRL straight line walking for a few minutes after taking off the headset, pretty wild.

Lmao I remember a few years back when we were all hand wringing about how Facebook was buying all the VR studios (what’s the count now? 11?) and how this either meant FB was going to go full 90s Microsoft and lock everyone in to the Quest platform - or it was a necessary evil to save VR. Either way, there was a lot of dev talent cooking up the next generation of VR games under the Oculus Studios brand and it was just a matter of time before the floodgates opened.

Turns out Zuck just likes collecting game studios. One of those rich man hobbies I’ll never understand.

AFAIK these are just the engines ported to VR and some of the original shareware content. You buy the old game and then copy the copy written game data to the Oculus. There’s no infringement that way.

Yeah but no way is Meta going to sell that sort of thing. They seem to have a good relationship with MS so maybe they can license Doom and Wolfenstein but stuff like Jedi Knight is obviously never getting the green light.

Now I’m imagining them hiring the team behind the Morrowind VR port and licensing out an official VR remaster with their AI voice tech and proper combat mechanics. :gizz:

Imagine adult content that utilizes the mixed reality. Have a couple beautiful models lying on your bed. Why not.

This basically already exists in video form but should get much better thanks to the Q3 passthrough. Porn is at the bleeding edge of this stuff, as always.

The VR porn studios have been slowly iterating on the passthrough concept since the Pro’s release. Haven’t checked in a bit, but I think at this point they’re filming in a full green screen environment and have the dude in a green screen suit with just his dick poking out lol. Idk if there’s any SFW clips out there but it’s extremely Blade Runner 2049ish.

So I saw that you can have yourself logged in on two devices and play those at the same time. I'm planning on playing Walkabout Mini-Golf with my gf. Not an issue in the slightest but are we both going to be stuck using a bald, bearded ginger as an avatar?

Last time I did this (which, admittedly, was like six months ago), you were stuck using the same avatar.

But the absolute worst thing is that you can’t ball hunt in shared account multiplayer. Hated it so much that I just pirated an extra PC copy of the game and had one player on PCVR, the other on standalone.

It’s AppSW’ed 45->90 which would be less of a problem if it was limited to the old hardware. Seems odd they couldn’t get the Q3 at native 90 or even native 72.

As much as I appreciate VD. I'm really hoping this just replaces all that poo poo for most people.

Tested Steam Link a bit just now on my Pro and, kinda annoyingly, I don’t think it actually outright replaces anything.

Steam Link: best latency, probably best for anything not using OpenXR (or the old Oculus OpenVR)

AirLink: likely still holds the crown for bitrate, but VD comes very close. Might need it for certain Oculus titles. Dogshit UI

VD: worst latency, best UI (especially for flatscreen), can run most Oculus games without Revive, beta OpenXR runtime gives noticeable performance gains on some OXR titles (MSFS)

I’m mostly surprised they didn’t add a backwards compatibility layer for PSVR1 titles and maybe upscale the resolution a bit. Was it just a “bad experience” thing or was there some technical reason?

I hope licensing out the Quest ecosystem is part of some behind closed doors quid pro quo with Google to bring over full fat Android (Boz has said they’ve been trying to do so, but Google wanted too much in return).

Otherwise this sounds an awful lot like PR speak for “the VR pivot failed”.
