Well I am
over-fucking-whelmed...
Young Orc

I have about 2 hours in this. Super fun, cute SNESish graphics and sound/music.

Basic gameplay is a 2D golf game style: pick your swing power, then pick your angle, navigate a winding course full of obstacles towards the hole. You have 4 shots to start, but hitting bonus items in the level gives you more. The real meat of the game comes from using "ace cards" to achieve different effects: take a practice shot, make the ball drop instantly with a mouse click, all the way to splitting into three balls or turning the ball into a rocket. You can carefully make your way through the course hitting all the bonuses to keep your available shots up or you can try weird trick shots and see how fast you can beat the course. There's also a ball spin mechanic that adds some extra finesse to every shot if you want.

A round consists of 18 holes, if you fail a hole, you go back to the very beginning to try again (although it hints you might get bonus cards that prevent this?). It's roguelite, so the courses change up each time you try again. There are different biomes and bosses at the end of each one that you compete against.

So far, it's pretty fun, the first few holes take about 5ish minutes each to complete, so it's pretty friendly for a quick "pick up and play a hole" in between chores, but it also hits that "weelllll.... just one more hole" kind of vibe.

Cult of the Lamb is fun and silly. I greatly appreciate its accessibility controls, which include the usual, plus being able to turn combat to easy. I couldn't play it without that switch, and it's a great game for people who are bad at combat.

On the other hand I like it a lot on hard. Makes the management side a lot more difficult actually because your cult gets really disappointed and you lose tons of spirit or reverence or whatever it's called whenever you die. So it really makes the combat tense which I like because I know if I screw up I'll have issues at the compound.

Just a really well crafted game. The combat is enjoyable, the management side is really good, the art style looks amazing and the minigames are a good time as well.

That's disappointing, as I was looking forward to it.

But I tried the character creator, and the interface was really kind of weird. Like saving your creation was confusing.

Also, the creation tools were deep, but in weird directions. For example, there are a lot of options for artificial limbs (IIRC), but clothing options are surprisingly limited.

Also Epic Game Store only (at least for now) so that is another stumbling block as far as I'm concerned.

That's not inconsistent with the gameplay of the previous SR games. You got a wide range of options for physical appearance, but had a starting outfit that you were expected to use in-game currency to replace as part of a tutorial mission. Purchasing new clothing also was one way to (slowly) increase your "respect", which determined when new missions would become available to you.

I picked this up yesterday for the Switch and it's a lot of fun! I played Sheepo (the other metriodvania by this developer) earlier this year and this expands on that type of gameplay pretty well.

My only complaint is that your character does a lunge when you do a basic attack, so it can take a little getting used to to not ram into enemy hitboxes.

What is this kid's DEAL?!

I saw some chat about Blossom Tales 2. My impressions are very positive so far. Started a little lackluster, just like the first game, but once I got into the dungeons it really felt like a version of the old isometric zeldas that kicked things up a notch with the combat and dungeon puzzleboxes. The bombs are really fun to use. Snappy, effective, nice FX, and just enough danger to yourself to spice things up a bit.

The first real dungeon felt more like a late-game Link's Awakening dungeon than a training tool. They have a gimmick where you can flood and unflood rooms, and there are doors at different elevations that can only be accessed in one state. Getting the swimming item midway through is a delightful AHA moment that re-contextualizes the space. Also a good number of optional treasure rooms that reward backtracking.

Bosses consistently have 3-4 different moves that all feel very different. If you are grading it in comparison to Link's Awakening and the Oracle games, I would say that the fights feel more dynamic and interesting, even though they haven't presented a true challenge. They do some really pretty graphical stuff with glow and particle effects.

Downsides: Basic writing is less fun. Characters feel blander, less interesting than in most Zelda games. The whole thing with it being a meta story-in-a-story is less cool than the devs seem to think it is.

If you feel nostalgia for gameboy-era Zelda games, I would say Blossom Tales 2 is worth a play. However, if you want something more ambitious with better writing, Crosscode, Hyperlight Drifter, or Unsighted would be a better value for your money.

I grabbed it; if you like life sim games like Princess Maker, Ciel Fledge, or Growing Up then it’s a great addition to that genre. Good art, good story, and a very interesting card game for challenges.

Two warnings: the storyline is about a struggling free thinking progressive colony, and the colony really struggles the first play through and so you might find it more depressing and heartbreaking than joyous; second, as implied by the previous sentence, it’s a Groundhog Day situation around your life, so you’re not going to get a happy ending the first time through (at least!). But at least there’s an in-game reason your character somehow knows to be in the right place at the right time to prevent random tragedies in your later play throughs! Oh, also implied by that first warning: if you’re the kind of person who throws a tantrum when games let you choose gender pronouns and non-binary options, this game is absolutely not for you, but that’s fine, because you don’t deserve good games anyways.

First run my best friend, my parents, and most of the colonists died, with definite implications that if only I had worked harder I could have saved them. Second run I have so far saved all but one of them AND I got a half-spider half-octopus half-mushroom pet which trills in-game when you pet it.

If you like Sam Barlow's particular brand of "review the video clips and link stuff together to figure out the story" kind of games (Her Story, Telling Lies), here's Immortality, another one of those.

quote:

Match cut your own path through the footage and solve the mystery:

What happened to Marissa Marcel?

IMMORTALITY is an interactive trilogy from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story. Use the cinematic ability to teleport from scene to scene to explore a treasure trove of newly unearthed footage from the three lost films of Marissa Marcel and traverse decades of movie history.

I liked Her Story quite a bit, and Telling Lies a lot less (but still thought it was okay), so I'll probably grab this to check it out. $17.99 right now on 10% sale for launch. Note that it describes itself as a trilogy, which is a little misleading. I don't think this is an episodic thing where two more games are going to be released -- I think that's referring to the three "lost movies" within the game that you'll be navigating.

(edit): This also appears to be on Gamepass, and since these games rarely lend themselves to multiple playthroughs, if you can play it on there for free, even better.

I'll say this on my limited time so far: the acting in this game is quite good, especially by FMV game standards. The one thing it suffers from is kind of like Her Story where it seems very possible to stumble on critical knowledge fairly early, but it's all compelling enough and well shot enough that I'm still digging around for everything I can find since I'm finding it all very interesting.

Also, yes, a fair bit of nudity, although some of it makes sense since the first "lost" movie is supposed to be aping one of those Italian films from the 70s that's like half overwrought drama and half soft porn and the actors and actresses and even the cinematography is really nailing that style.

Demo of this was great and I'm looking forward to playing the full game whenever I get around to it. Getting very positive buzz, and it's on Game Pass as well, fyi.

Just be aware that, while the Pikmin influence is obvious, it's a 3D platformer with Pikmin elements, not the way around. I'd recommend The Wild at Heart if you want something closer to a straight Pikmin-like, though that has its share of unique elements too. Also heard good things about Dap, but haven't played that one yet.

It's on sale now, but it's not very good sadly. It has a similar keyword system to Her Story, but it will drop you in the middle of the clip where that keyword occured, so if you want to see the whole thing you need to very slowly rewind to the beginning each time. And also almost all of the clips are long one-sided conversations, since the premise is you're watching recordings from video calls. So overall just very tedious to play, I suggest to skip it and go straight to Immortality.

Every Barlow video recording game has a terrible video player. It's like the one thing the game is doing, you would think it would be well-executed but absolutely not. Playing through Telling Lies I was lucky enough to find the secret maneuver to start a clip at the beginning rather than when the keyword was said but even then it was a slog to use

I'm glad Sam Barlow finally found his niche with these video scrubbing games because his previous track record was pretty dismal (even though I liked his work on Shattered Memories despite it being generally regarded as dogshit)
