Yeah I was watching Sequisha play rogue and the faster interaction speeds + invis + faster base movement all seemed really good. Wizard invis/haste/slow seem like they could support a pretty high skill ceiling too but cast times and such seem tricky, especially given the low health.

You start with a 30+ damage chopper and most of the 2H weapons are 45 or better. Most of your perks are just MORE DAMAGE and by level 10 you can oneshot half the classes in the game. With a cleric behind you you're basically just a killdozer.

ultrafilter posted:Airoheart I'm about an hour into this, and it feels like playing A Link to the Past with somebody's Elder Scrolls dialogue-heavy elf fanfiction shoved into every nook and cranny. I keep wanting to like it, and I've finished the first dungeon. So far all I've gotten out of the game is that there's a ton of annoying little gently caress-you enemies (hornets in the bushes to dissuade you from cutting grass, randomly-moving wisp enemies that will happily NPC pathfind their way in front of the one-tile-wide path or door you need to go through, invisible enemies you only know exist because you can see their footsteps and always manage to graze me because the sword causes Airo to move forward slightly ) and that every NPC in this game needs to shut the gently caress up. I think I've been told the story of how the BBEG had his soul get trapped in a stone and scattered to the six corners of the kingdom at least four times since I started the game. It's a Link to the Past clone! Shut the gently caress up and point me toward places to explore! The map's pretty bad too, and I don't know if there's in-dungeon maps. At least there wasn't one for the first dungeon, so if you got turned around you couldn't even get a vague shape of the dungeon layout. That seemed OK for the first dungeon, but if there's any level of complexity that arises from the ALTTP style multi-layered floors inside of dungeons (like Ice Cave in ALTTP) then I will absolutely dumpster this game. And extremely minor nitpick: The game tells you to not use your control sticks, use the DPad. Half an hour in, I finally go read the controls to see if there's a shortcut key for the Map, which I usually set to the Back button on a controller. Not only can you not set it to that button, it's by-default set to clicking in the right stick.

ultrafilter posted:Vacant Kingdom I've picked up the game, gotten through a few boss fights, and I think that I can safely say that its sense of humour is very good, its puzzle design is great (one of the first actually very good block pushing puzzle sections I've played with! I actually wanted it to hit me with another one!), it knows how not to waste your time, and its combat is something that I don't have enough context of bullet hells to judge fully but it feels meaty without being overly taxing; the boss whose gimmick is "multiple-choice tests you on the genuinely quite funny flavour text you've been reading throughout the game thus far" is a particular highlight. It's a game that puts a very low price tag on its jokes, usually throwing at least a couple of multiple kinds into every major scene and sequence, and as a result doesn't feel like it's trying super hard to make you laugh so much as it feels like it was developed by folks who kept making each other laugh and then saying "okay we gotta put that in." I love it and will probably 100% it if it isn't too long; it feels like it's very complete-able.

ultrafilter posted:Asterigos: Curse of the Stars Its very good with some reservations. It's almost got too much story compared to the standard Soulslike, like you can talk to anyone in your hub about anyone else and you kind of get tired of the sheer amount of dialog. With a few quests actually hidden in dialog trees. This is espcially annoying when you encounter entire corridors of identical doors which may give random flavor and may give actual quests. Also the progression/skill tree is entirely linked to specific weapons, which means that you kind of choose two weapons and will never vary from those in a kind of sunk cost thing. That said, the exploration stuff is pretty good and rivals most other soulslikes, the game seems very open to a varied order of objectives. Ozymandias: The Bronze Age Empire Sim is out on Steam. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1768280/Ozymandias_Bronze_Age_Empire_Sim/ A 4X strategy game focused on being quicker and more to-the-point than most big 4X games. A typical game lasts about one to two hours, rather than the 40 or more you'd expect to put into a Civilization or Stellaris run. 41 out of 42 reviews are positive. The upside is that it is straightforward, pretty simple to pick up, and has a lot of depth in play and strategies. The downside is that there are only a limited selection of maps and civs to play on each map - no random or custom maps, and some civs just start scenarios pre-boned. But overall, it's been a great game for the price and as a nice, quick-to-complete strategic experience. It also has a free demo if you want to test it out!

I thought this was going to be in EA but apparently they're doing an episodic release. The Eternal Cylinder quote:Control a herd of charming creatures called Trebhum and explore an unforgettable alien world filled with exotic lifeforms and surreal environments. Discover dozens of mutations to overcome puzzles, explore new biomes, and survive on a dangerous planet. No reviews yet. ASTLIBRA Revision quote:Confront time and fate in the 2D action RPG, Astlibra Revision. Paradise Marsh quote:Stars have vanished from the sky and scattered around in a perfect wetland crawling with wildlife... One thing I'll say about this after having played it today is that it's pretty short and relatively easy, especially in comparison to Obra Dinn. I cruised through it in about five and a half hours and only really had trouble filling in one part near the end (and even there, I knew what happened, I just wasn't clear on what event the game wanted me to talk about). It was an enjoyable time, though.
