The original horrible idea being discussed was forced unpaid work for poor people to pay higher taxes. The idea seemed to be that everyone would pay the same amount of income tax, so lets calculate how that would work:

total income tax revenue = $1.5 trillion

working age population = 200 million

income tax revenue per working age person = $7,500

$7,500 / ($7.25/hr) / (40 hrs/week) = 25 weeks.

So if your labor reduced your tax debt at minimum wage, if you were unemployed for an entire year you would have to do forced labor for 6 months just to pay your taxes. Or if you worked the whole year at minimum wage, half your income would go to taxes. Presumably if you were married you would have to work the whole year at minimum wage just to pay your taxes for both you and your spouse.

So either you work and all your money goes to taxes and you starve or you have to spend so much time doing forced labor that you can never hold a job.

On the other hand, someone who made 100 million dollars would pay a 0.0075% tax income tax rate.

I guess it would seem like it makes sense if you start with the beliefs that 1) it's unfair that poor people pay less taxes and 2) poor people are poor because they're sitting around being lazy rather than working, and then you don't really think it through at all.

So basically, the average fox news viewer or hn poster would probably like it.

Interviewed at Etsy about a year or two ago and the interviewer was asking me about politically charged topics. How I would handle workplace gender complaints. How they should handle racial diversity in the work place, etc.

It was really clear I was giving wrong answers. I told them flat out that I think people should be judged by the quality of their character, not the color of their skin and that the company should just try to be fair and hire the best people.

I mean I get that companies want to do the right thing but you can only really do ONE thing well.

The first comment starts with "Latin is the most powerful natural language I know," and it only gets worse from there.

I guess dead languages are convenient as a blank slate on which you can impose your own ideas without any pesky native speakers to tell you that you're insane.

Also, lol, are there really still places that force everyone to learn latin?

I think some people just don't really enjoy food. I've had a friend since high school who seems to be perfectly well adjusted and isn't a picky eater at all aside from not liking fish, and he basically never has any opinion or preferences about food whatsoever. He doesn't eat junk food at all, and eating basically seems to be a chore for him. He's always been really skinny, and he started lifting weights a while ago but it seems like he can't eat enough to put on mass at all. I don't think it's the environment in which he was raised, either, because his parents were completely different and always cooked a lot. I have sort of entertained the idea that he has an impaired sense of smell or something, but I don't think that's actually the case. He just doesn't get much enjoyment out of food for some reason.

I just find it hard to understand because I really enjoy cooking, eating, and trying new foods.

You know, philanthropists really need to invest in higher level free education for non-CS sciences. We have tons of free resources with tremendously beautiful animations on data structures and state-of-the-art machine learning, but the same can't be said for bio and chemistry.
You somehow quoted the least crazy part of that post.

People can't make educated judgements about stuff like Mercury Thiomersal because that level of organic chemistry understanding isn't covered well by existing resources like Khan Academy... There is no FDA in Africa to bring down the hammer on you making videos on low-cost quality control for orphan drug analogues when people are dying due to corruption, incompetence, and poor medical practices.. The level of biochemistry knowledge on HN is amazingly poor, every thread on CRISPR and gene drives reads like the infamous parable of the blind men and an elephant.

An honest question: How does this compare to the group-think in the climate change/global warming research? Are we similarly rejecting funding to any research that does not fit into the common consensus? The fact that we call some people "climate change deniers" tells me that we have an unhealthy dynamics going on there. Will it take 30 years to get to the same point?

Once a company pays you, it's not your work, it's their work. They paid you fair and square.
IMHO a developer need to produce about 10x what's his paid as to cover for the company costs and profits. If one thinks that they can cover those 9 tenths in marketing, office space, infrastructure, admin and legal costs in a more efficient manner, they should quit and start their own company.

Edit: just so I make it clear, I don’t hate her for it. I just have a hard to accepting it but i guess life isn’t fair.
