I guess Paper Mario TTYD counts as retro now... I've played it before but always stopped somewhere along the way. I started a new playthrough last night in Dolphin and I'm determined to finally beat it this time

I'm halfway through a run of Castlevania: SOTN. I've never been a big Castlevania guy but this game just has amazing RPG elements for an action game.

You should definitely play Aria of Sorrow and the DS games afterwards

I've been playing through the Breath of Fire series since I really only played a little bit of 3 as a kid. I did the first two on Switch, and they're pretty rough games but have some unique features and enough charm that I still enjoyed them. 3 is a massive improvement and genuinely a great game so far (I'm up to the Contest of Champions). I picked up copies of 3, 4 and Dragon Quarter so I'm playing them on the real hardware.

I really like the direction they went in for 3's soundtrack. Some of the music is boring, but the battle themes are all really strong and unlike most other RPG music I've heard (I particularly love Donden).

4 has a good reputation but I never really got into that game.

Yeah a lot of the music is pretty catchy and the battle themes are great. It’s funny, when playing BoF2 I kept thinking the battle themes sounded like they could have been in a Mega Man X game, and it turns out the composer Yuko Takehara worked on the first MMX

Wild Arms. The 3D battles are pretty rough-looking but everything else holds up pretty well, the music is great and the 2D art is very charming. And using tools to solve puzzles gives me heavy Lufia 2 vibes

The only thing I don't care for with San Andreas is the strength/weight mechanic. I guess it's kinda funny for a few minutes to run around with an obese CJ but having to grind on a treadmill to be able to swim effectively is annoying. There's probably mods that make this a non-issue though I imagine

san andreas also just rules because of the setting and characters. compton in the 90s is a lot more fun to me than some new york italian guys or whatever

Yeah for sure. It's got a really great map that's tons of fun to gently caress around in too

yeah the "vibe" of los santos in the '90s is intoxicating. i spent many a summer's day low-riding around south los santos doing nothing in particular. san andreas' life sim mechanics make it very easy to lose a lot of time to just driving around going clothes shopping and customizing cars you find. i was pleased to see 5 bring that stuff back but the overall attitude of that game really turns me off. these games have always had a mean streak of course but 5 ratchets it up to the point where i don't really like spending time with any of the characters. certainly no subplot in 5 is as enjoyable as planning the casino heist with wu zi mu or getting into the truth's weird alien poo poo

The one dialogue sequence in 5 with Michael calling Trevor a hipster makes me cringe a lot. The gameplay in 5 is top notch but the story/writing/characters are deffo not as good as SA

GTA4 does a really good job nailing the vibes of NYC and the different boroughs but it’s definitely lacking gameplay wise

Softmod Wii is cool because it can output proper 240p so it looks great on a CRT

I feel like I've heard a ton about this game but I really don't know anything about it.

It's an interesting RPG with a blend of real-time and turn-based combat - you have random encounters that lock you into a set space where you can move around to dodge enemy attacks while an ATB gauge fills up and then you can pause to select an action. And it has kind of a survival horror aesthetic with prerendered backgrounds and it takes place in modern day NYC.

Just finished Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and now I'm moving on to Harmony of Dissonance and then Aria of Sorrow. Haven't really played any of these since release and Circle of the Moon held up well besides the terrible item/card drop rate.

I tried playing CotM recently and I couldn't get over the incredibly slow movement speed lol. Even when you get the dash boots it's awkward to have to double tap to move faster than a snail's pace. Aria is incredible though

Decided to give Rambo on the NES an honest shot. Feels.like one of those games that had potential it just wasn't going to live up to. Navigation feels weird and I'm never entirely sure exactly what the next step is supposed to be.

It’s a weirdly ambitious game for what it is

Is there a website and/or thread concentrating on this sort of thing, i.e. new engines for old games?

I dunno if there's a thread specifically for source ports but here's a wiki with a big list of what's out there

EDIT: Actually the early FPS megathread has a ton of info with recommendations (for FPS games at least) https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3420790

I don't think pretty much anyone did. Beyond Oasis is a lot more well known, but even then neither game really has any sort of cult following or anyone that cares about either game or remembers them fondly in 2021. There is really nothing about either game that is that interesting or worth talking about too. The next Saturn game I am going to play is Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean.

Speaking of games where there’s nothing interesting or worth talking about…

I don't think i'll finish this game. I keep seeing it talked about as one of the best Saturn games, but I mean, that is a very low bar considering the size of the Saturn library.

I owned it as a kid and it was one of the blandest most generic RPGs I’ve ever played
