The Recess of 1130 *Vassalize any possible Christian lords in Arabia and Levant, press claims on Tabriz, distribute conquered land to previous owners. *Distribute military, economic and cultural technologies as detailed. *Request siege engineers and a scholar-bureaucrat from China, and aid them however possible should their situation further deteriorate. *Carry out raids on the lands of Tabriz, Bugrid, Omarid and other Muslim lands. *Appoint merit-based character as Steward. *Appoint Geoffroy de Bures as Chancellor. *Appoint Fan Shenquan as Court Tutor. Chapter 8 - The Cross Militant - 1130 to 1135 One thousand and one hundred and thirty years after the birth of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Land is in turmoil. The only certainty now is that the many wars that have plagued the past five years — the revenge of the sons of Seljuk, the Shia jihad for Egypt, the Turkish invasion of Edessa, the Chinese invasion of Persia — would have drastic consequences in years to come. First and foremost, however, the Seljuk Empire was defeated. Their empire was dismantled b the Chinese, with new powers rising to rule the traditional strongholds of Islam in Persia, Iraq, Syria and Arabia. That didn't mean the Seljuks were destroyed, however. The family was still survived in the pretentious Sultanate of Rum, stretching across both sides of the Bosphorus and ruled by Kilij Arslan, popularly known as "the Hammer of the Greeks". Fortunately, the Hammer was locked in constant conflict with Byzantium, far too intent on destroying them to turn his attentions south. For now, at least. As for the Chinese, they had lost of a great deal of men and material in defeating the Turks, at the expense of stability at home. It was there, in the distant east, that a great host of barbarians were wreaking havoc and laying waste, bent on unseating the Song and seizing the Mandate of Heaven. Many words with little meaning, for a Christian on the other side of the world. Much closer to home, the Shia Muslims retreated to their stronghold in North Africa, licking their wounds and waiting for the opportune moment to flood into Egypt once again. And finally, against all odds and reckoning, the Kingdom of Jerusalem had weathered the storm. Without her holy city and ruled from the banks of the Nile, but all the same, Jerusalem had survived. What does all that mean? Well, I finally got to have my coronation! A small affair, unfortunately, the treasury wasn't exactly overflowing. Most of my money was spent on keeping the army raised as it marched northward, set on meeting the Turks in battle near Edessa. That is, until they ran into a bit of a snag while crossing the Karasu, marking the crossing into Edessa, when Fan Shenquan's buckwild horse sent him plummeting into the depths of the river. And the Haute Cour, the most esteemed lords that Jerusalem has to offer, they were utterly lost without him, so the decrepit fools sent another request for commanders from China, with another bribe, this one being money and men. Sailing across the width of the world is... no mean task, especially when you don't know if you're sailing into a safe harbour. But a few months later, a Chinese vessel docked at Eilat, with a party of siege engineers reaching Alexandria a few weeks later. By then, the situation in Edessa had deteriorated to the point of embarrassment, and one of these easterners — Jia Kui — was supposed to be some mastermind of the battlefield, so the Haute Cour gave him command of the army in Edessa... ...and as it turns out, he wasn't bad. Not bad at all, he even captured the bastard who started this invasion, pinning down his retinue and clapping him in chains! There was some talk of ransoming him or something, but that's when I stepped in. My... my friends insisted that he had to be dealt with publicly, king on king, and so I gave the order to have the little weasel blinded. He died a few days later, poor sod. Once that was done, I was only too happy to end the war. And with that, at long last, the realm was at peace. Some much-needed peace as well, it gave the lords of Jerusalem time to rebuild and recover. As for me... well, I was meeting with my new friends. They came from all across Christendom — Greece, Hispania, Germany, France, Britain, Egypt — and they came with such stories, stories about the slumber of God Almighty, tales about the meddling of his Angels on earth, whispers of the deeds of Godefroy God-chosen... stories and secrets. I needed to know more about their faith, but these Jaffites don't deal with strangers. If I wanted to learn, I had to prove myself worthy of their trust by murdering one of their enemies... Me! A king! Eh, it was irritating, but I got it done. It was unfortunate that they chose poor Mariam as the sacrifice, even more unfortunate that she was carrying my child, but at least she died quickly. And that was enough for them. Some priest was dispatched to escort me to the Jaffite haven, presumably somewhere in Jaffa, but I had to keep up appearances in the meanwhile. So I met with foreign dignitaries and embassies from the world over, all keen to meet with the King of Jerusalem and Protector of Egypt, arranging marriages with Poland and Byzantium and even a non-aggression pact with some Christian king in Arabia. As for the lords of the Haute Cour, they were busy planning the reconquest of Jerusalem. Peasants and refugees from the holy land were still surging into Egypt and Edessa, whipping crowds into riots wherever they went. The best way to end the crisis was, of course, to retake Jerusalem. The Haute Cour wouldn't be able to bribe China into intervening though, not this time, though they did manage to attract a scholar-bureaucrat from the eastern empire. God knows why. At the same time, raids were ordered into the neighboring realms of Aleppo, Damascus and Beirut, weakening surrounding Mohammadens. And finally, in the dying days of 1133, the Haute Cour raised an army and declared war on Tabriz. Just a year of peace didn't do much for manpower, but the treasury was flowing again, and a total of 10,000 levies and mercenaries were raised and placed under the command of Jia Kui. This was the so-called Holy Army, poised to descend on Jerusalem from the north. That was around when the warrior-priest of the Jaffites arrived at my apartments, burrowed deep in Alexandria. Going by the name Waldemar, he was a... a very impressive specimen, needless to say. He came with almost a thousand soldiers, encamped outside the walls of Alexandria, and a warning — that if I joined him on this journey, I would have to do so as a Jaffite. And so I was left with a decision... orthodoxy or heresy? Rome or Jaffa? Catholic or Jaffite? It would've been a difficult decision, if news of another death hadn't reached Alexandria a few days later. The death of Pope Urban III and coronation of Pope Stephanus X, said to a wise and magnanimous even amongst the giants of Christendom... Unfortunately, his first act as Pope was to reaffirm my excommunication... And that was enough for me to throw my lot in with the Jaffites. A few weeks later, we were ready to march. Together with a few Egyptian levies and my own retinue, Les Cavaliers de Bouillon, I headed an army numbering almost 3000, and we began our trek to the fanfare and cheering of tens of thousands gathered around the streets and gates of Alexandria. For them, we were marching to liberate Jerusalem. Of course, we were doing no such thing. The larger army, led by Jia Kui and Prince Thibault, was already marching on the holy city, overpowering Mohammaden forces in battles at Scandalon and Caesarea. We marched along the coast instead, pressing through the seaside breeze and summer heat until we reached the sturdy walls of Jaffa. And once there, with most of the army besieging the port-city, Waldemar and I struck into the desert. Whilst journeying to his secret haven, Waldemar revealed to me some of the secrets of his order... according to him, they were responsible for the assassination of the Seljuk infidel, they were behind the killings of corrupt Christians, and they were planning to... to change Christendom forever. Eventually, we reached a stronghold nestled within the dunes around Jaffa, Godested. Just before crossing the threshold, Waldemar asked once more — "Are you sure you want to do this?" I had only one answer to give. Just a few miles to the east, the Holy Army had ravaged Acre and Ascalon, storming across cities and tearing through towns, before reaching the outskirts of Jerusalem. The road to Jerusalem wasn't open, however. With the towers and walls of the holy city almost in sight, the Holy Army was met by the Tabrizi forces in bitter battle between the two sides, Outremer and Turk, crusader and jihadi, Christian and Muslim The fighting raged until Jia Kui, realising that daylight was slipping and battle was turning against him, led a cavalry charge into the heart of the enemy, past the fluttering flags of Tabriz, and onto the Emir of Tabriz himself... The Emir was quickly surrounded, but Jia Kui died in the chaos that followed, a stray arrow catching him in the neck. But his work was done, and with the enemy fleeing en masse, Prince Thibault took up the standard and led the assault on Jerusalem... And when the sun rose on the holy city, it was flying the banners of Jerusalem once more. With the heart of the Holy Land seized, Christian banners were hoisted above surrounding fortresses in the weeks that followed, one by one. And with their leader captured and rebellions sprouting at home, the Turks could only retreat. The war was over. The news would fly east to Persia and west to Europe, north to Rum and south to Egypt, sending crowds of Christians and Muslims into jubilation and mourning by turn. It would even wheedle its away into Godested, the isolated stronghold of Jaffites, where the King of Jerusalem was swearing the oaths that would shackle him for the rest of his life, chaining him to the right hand of the Jaffite creed, to the Cross Militant. hashashash fucked around with this message at 02:40 on Mar 6, 2020 |

Noble lords, i come with good and bad news. The bad news is, my esteemed father, Alexandre Magno Abrão, died a short time before the reconquest of the Holy City. He never got to drink his beloved wines again. The good news is, I, Diogo Alexandre Abrão, his son and heir, will now represent our House in this court. I further add that i will take his place in Pro Deo et Civitate, for a while, at least. OOC: My character will stay portuguese and Catholic.
