The Recess of 1225 * Award titular titles to the Nile Republic, Red Sea Republic, Oresund Republic * Replace the Avarice Prevention Act with Avarice Prevention Act 2 * Spend between 1350 and 1500 gold on assassinations of the Khagan and successors, use councillors to destabilise the mongol realm * A new law mandating yearly raids, with these stipulations * Appoint Grandmaster Ottavio of the Knights of Krete as Steward * Give Count Yijian the nickname "The Enormous" * Swap the Council positions Prince Boson of Arabia Metrae and Prince Hakam of Gujarat * Appoint the Refugee Knights to Investigate the Curious Case of the Carved Crosses * Give Emperor Preferent Josselin the nickname "The Pirate" Chapter 27 – Turnips and Assassins – 1225 to 1230 The new year began with a gathering at Aden. Flying a makeshift banner and led by my own son, these 10,000 were largely levies drawn from Yemen and Hejaz, peasants and farmers who abandoned their hovels and fields in search of riches and plunder, and that was precisely what they were going to get. Charged with yearly raids spread across the many enemies of Jerusalem, this party of privateers started with Abyssinia, pillaging and looting the villages that dotted the Horn of Africa. At the same time, the nobles of Jerusalem granted newly-created honourary titles to the merchants of the Nile, Red Sea and Oresund, likely in the hope that they’d pay a pretty penny for them. And those ducats would be needed, because the Haute Cour had decided that the pagan Mongols, bordering them in Anatolia, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Denmark and even on the Indus, well, they decided that they had gotten far enough. We didn’t have the troops to fight them, but we had money, and lots of it. And about a year later, the Great Khan Jebe was poisoned at his own wedding banquet (a wedding in which the lecher was married to his own daughter! good riddance!) For all his perversions, however, Jebe was a capable ruler, and had already named an heir should any misfortune befall him. So a smooth succession followed, with his younger brother Eljigedei inheriting an empire that spanned the width of the old world and crossed into others. Obviously, the answer to that was to send more assassins. The assassins, rumoured to have been the errant knights who fled Europe in the aftermath of Mongol destruction, managed to reach the galloping capital of the Great Khan under the guise of priests, and then scam their way into his court by boasting of their (fabricated) lineages, and finally, after a night of feasting and drinking, one of them managed to steal into his tents, knife in hand, as he drunkenly lumbered towards his bed. And the second Great Khan in a year was found a few hours later, dried blood caking his torn neck and glassy eyes staring at nothing. And with that, there were no sons of Genghis Khan left living, so this time around, the assassination was followed by a bloody succession. Rival branches of the Borjigin clan ruled in Asia, which was dominated by the descendants of Genghis’ eldest Jochi, and central Europe, where the progeny of another son Tolui held sway, and finally Anatolia, conquered by yet another son Chagatai and ruled by his own heirs. These sons and grandsons of Genghis Khan, many of whom had played together as children and hunted, feasted, drunk together as adults, were now at each other’s throats as they grappled for the mantle of Great Khan… and no one was the wiser. And with that, I could breathe a sigh of relief and focus on the Empire. Word soon reached us of my sons’ exploits in the east, where he (and the Princes of Aden and Sinai, I suppose) ravaged and harried the coasts of India, skirmishing with pagan kings and hauling loot onto his ships throughout the summer of 1228. I wanted nothing more than to be with him, back in wondrous India, but the hot weather had worsened my ill health into gout, and soon I was scarcely able to sit a horse. My son's young wife, Soléne Konopka, seemed to take pity on me. She was a sweet and kind-hearted soul, and at one of the many miserable balls that plagued Jerusalem, we shared a quiet dance in remembrance of my son, sharing whispers and edging closer… And before I knew what’d happened, we were tumbling into my sheets. Was it wrong? Absolutely. I was thrice her age, she was my son’s wife, and… and I wanted her all the same. I was soon distracted by my own vassals, however, as they began ruffling feathers in the capital. Taking up the cause of the brutal child-murders in Armenia, they started a formal investigation into the matter, assigning the eager knights errant to the task. And predictably, a few weeks into the investigation, two of these “knights errant” were found sprawled in the halls of the House of Groves, crosses branded into their heads. They weren’t so eager after that. At the same time, my son led his party of privateers on the last of their raids, this time ransacking the coastal cities dotting the Persian Gulf. Having raided the rich cities of Musqat, Hormuz, Qatif and even Basra, he attempted to sail up the Euphrates and sack Baghdad itself, only to be denied by a pair of immense forts at the mouth of the waterway. Defeated at last, he turned around and landed at Aden a few months later, tales of his adventures and riches bounding ahead of him as he wound his way back to Jerusalem. In the rugged mountains of Anatolia, the demolished cities of Europe, the grassy expanse of Asia, the Mongol Civil War was drawing to a close. It was short, but bloody, and by the closing months of 1228, the Jochids stood victorious… partially. Much of the Russias had risen up in revolt, but from their stronghold in Mongolia, the Jochids sent wave after wave into Anatolia and Europe, overwhelming their kin, capturing dozens of leading Toluids and Chagatai, and slaughtering them all. The war was ended, but the price in blood was high, and the survivors wouldn’t forget, or forgive. This was obviously the perfect time to send another assassin. And the Turnip Knight, another one of these knights errant, was just suicidal enough to take the quest. He departed Jerusalem a few days after Christmas, and for almost six months, not a word or whisper was heard. All of the sudden, as spring swept into the holy land, a storm of rumour and gossip descended on Jerusalem. The Turnip Knight had challenged the Great Khan to single combat! No, he had snuck into his tents and let loose a venomous serpent… only for the snake to fall limp, having suffocated in the Knight’s coat! Lies! He had actually given up on his quest, and set a pile of turnips alight in the dead of winter for some warmth, only for the mound of manure beneath them to catch fire and explode! Idiocy! Each of these stories was more ludicrous than the last, but they all had one thing in common – the assassins had failed, and the Mongols knew it. A message arrived from the Great Khan a few days later – a box of rotten turnips, attached to a declaration of war. hashashash fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Oct 1, 2020 |

Count Yijian "the Enormous" of Amman/Xin Xi'an The Adolescent enters the room, ducking his head to fit through the small doorway of the debate chamber. It seems impossible, but he has gotten taller in recent years, more muscular. He wears a tight-looking doublet and a comedically small cape. It is a wonder his family decided to train their child in the matters of court etiquette instead of the battlefield, but perhaps they had their reasons. He is so wracked with anxiety about social niceties that he does not notice several nobles escape out a back door. Before the Adolescent can move, a slender figure steps out from behind him. It is the Count's much-beleaguered regent. Resigned to his fate, he reads out the following from a scroll. "The Count of Xin Xi'an (title pending) would like to thank all of you for coming here today. While he is pleased with the results of the last session, the Empire undoubtedly faces enormous threats. A loud clattering interrupts the speech as the Adolescent attempts to lean against a wall and accidentally topples a suit of armor. His face turns a bright red as he attempts to pick up the pieces. "In particular, he would like to thank his colleagues at A Gilded Tomorrow. He wishes to thank its leaders for taking him in and showing him the inner workings of Cour procedures. While he greatly values the time he spent among their members and hopes to keep their friendship, he does not believe his continued participation in the faction is best for Xin Xi'an (title pending) or the Empire of Jerusalem. As such, he withdraws from A Gilded Tomorrow, effectively immediately." "Instead, the d'Cathays—. Pardon. The Count wishes to propose the formation of a new faction that he feels is ideally suited to deal with the struggles before us today, the Friendly Association Against Mongolian Aggression." "If we receive enough members, our organizations will devote itself to the following ideas:
"This faction will exist so long as Mongolia presents a clear and immediate threat to us. The Count of Xin Xi'an (title pending) hopes you will join this faction to restore order to this world." The regent looks up from his scroll to see the Adolescent cradling the disconnected pieces of the suit of armor. The count gives an embarrassed smile as the regent departs. Though lacking the Adolescent's prodigious presence, there's something to be said about the next child's entrance, what with the massive papal hat sat upon his head. He appears uncomfortable and wary in this chamber, flanked as he is by his close aides and in the shadow of his educator, Erdesir, who takes to the podium to speak for the Pope-King. Notably, Erdesir appears slightly incensed at the Adolescent's recent proclamation, though he masters his annoyance quickly enough to speak on more solemn matters. "Well met, my friends. The d'Cathay's are correct about one thing - the Mongol threat is too dire to be ignored, as evidenced by their screaming hordes making ready to swarm us even as we speak here. An existential threat are they, a dagger aimed directly at the throat of Christendom - and it is upon this subject of our faith that Godefroy's descendant comes here today to speak of, and to rally again that spirit of necessary battle that brought us to this home of ours. So as Rome sent us to begin this mission, so we must return to Europe to see it ended. House de Boulogne hereby proclaims the Faith Eternal." (thanks Ralepozozaxe!) The Faith Eternal Faction Keywords: (Holy Warring w/ European Focus, Religious Reclamation and Consolidation) Theme: Christianity has become bloated and fractured - it must be healed by decisive hands lest the rot further consume. With our newly reformed faith currently the most stable wing of Christ's followers on earth, this task naturally falls to us. The people of Europe suffer under the yolk of the capricious and blood-thirsty Mongols, who squat upon some of Christianity's most holy sites. For the good of all godly folk, it is our duty to save them all. Our most holy places must needs be placed under proper custodianship, and our brothers and sisters in Europe, no matter their interpretation of our shared faith, would surely be better off freed from Mongol rule. Our empire was built by the holy crusaders of old, and now we shall honor their memory by wielding the blades that shall save our kin. By strengthening our reformed faith, we stand only to see the fragments and open wounds of Christianity be healed - those who represent the most radical elements of our fore-bearer faiths will be hunted and brought to justice. Though the time for struggle is now, it must not always be so - we shall endeavor to be Jerusalem's last crusaders and guide our people into more peaceful times. Long Term Aims: Reclaim holy sites for the faith (take for Jerusalem what makes sense, ensure religious control without direct vassalization otherwise). Export Reformed Catholic into Europe if possible. Liberate Europe from the Mongols (without blobbing - press claims or grant independence to taken lands). Eradicate Jaffism. Curtail Mongolian Expansion and neuter them as a threat by all means available. Wage the final crusades and disband the faction when our mission is complete. Game Mechanics: Improve Moral Authority by any means necessary. Always join Crusades focusing upon Europe (for the time being). Declare holy wars against the Mongols or Mongol successor states, prioritizing holy sites first. Continue the campaign of destabilization against the Mongols and make our strikes opportunistically. Root out members of the Cross Militant. Encourage conversion to Reformed Catholic to those already under the Christian umbrella, respect Jerusalem's historic(?) tolerance of other faiths otherwise. Erdesir steps away with a nod to the rest of the assembly, the Boy Pope accompanying him. Erwin the German fucked around with this message at 17:43 on May 23, 2020 |
