This thread is for bumping that old poo poo, talking about composers, sound chips, that weird poo poo where Defender II on the NES has the same soundtrack of Punch-Out, or that dungeon music from Last Battle that always reminds you of Bring On The Dancing Horses by Echo and the Bunnymen (maybe I’m projecting).

In this OP right here, I’m gonna post some winners.

I still wanna talk about my conspiracy theory where Guile was always meant to have Ken’s Stage theme but they nixed it just like Capcom was too chickenshit to keep M Bison M Bison in the states, electing to blender all the goddamn names except Sagat because legacy.

So, without any further ado, let’s get to some JAMS:

Journey to Silius - NES

Spider-Man Venom: Maximum Carnage - SNES

Mountain King - Atari 8-bit

Rad Racer 2 “Gum Ball Crash” - NES

Let’s talk about it! Share that shiiiiiiiiit.

While I’m thinking of it, Hellfire for the Sega Genesis has a baller rear end soundtrack, underrated in my opinion:

Let's talk specific composers! I'll just go with five (two together) at the moment.

Grant Kirkhope is a composing god.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR0iCxsIAuM

Pretty much everything Yoko Shimomura touches turns into music gold

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQEf2Cy_TlA

Tim and Geoff Follin were bonkers good. Like, seriously, they even gave this trash fire a really good soundtrack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGNSHNf-nlU

And of course, Nobuo Uematsu (not all of these are his, as he stopped being the main/only composer around...X or so)

That game, man. I could never figure it out. But one of the Follins was involved, so it of course had great music. Tim did amazing work on his own, but I think his best work came from collaborating with Geoff.

Yeah, let's talk composers....specifically two of the greatest of all time!

Rob Hubbard

One of the greatest composers for the 8-bit systems but he also had credits for some big 16-bit titles too. Did you know he composed the soundtracks for Road Rash and Road Rash II on the Sega Mega Drive, for instance?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrQuR1LHAVI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EcgruWlXnQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmmEBO2lDVI

Yuzo Koshiro

Probably most well known for composing the music for all three Streets of Rage games, did you know that Yuzo Koshiro also worked on the Master System version of Sonic The Hedgehog, rearranging Masato Nakamura's original score and creating his own music for Jungle Zone and Bridge Zone?

Came here to post Journey to Silius, ended up listening to it instead thanks to OP.

Fuckin' love me some VGM:

Castlevania: The Adventure may be a semi-trash game thanks to awkward controls and whatnot but god drat it has a great soundtrack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbgGxQGd4I4

The sequel is thankfully much better to play and has an equally great OST:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHLsolltIJ8

Batman Returns on NES opens up with a solid tune to beat the poo poo out of Gotham's criminals to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZSWvGn8P68

And then there's the work of Yuzo Koshiro, which everyone knows about anyway but here are a few of my favourites from Streets of Rage & Revenge of Shinobi:

I'd love to know what the gently caress they were on when composing stuff like this, it's incredible. The same thing happened with Pictionary. You have to be on something to do this with loving PICTIONARY:

Yes I did, but only after I'd finally finished the bloody thing! As absurdly difficult as that game is, Yuzo Koshiro did wonderful things with the Master System's sound capabilities to make playing it just that bit less frustrating. Labyrinth Zone's tune is just fantastic too.

I used to download remixes from ocremix sometimes but what always annoyed me was that most remixes just added filler like ill-fitting bridges and stuff, or just resampled the song using weird instruments that don't convey the bloopiness of the original tunes.

The Secret of Evermore "soundtrack" is really just half ambient stuff but I really love it, the sounds that play for the forest maze are perfect, like weird chirping birds and winds and ominous grunting. The fact that it's mostly ambient makes the appearance of an actual song sound more significant, like when you are outside of the Hall of Colossia it's quiet and you see this big temple standing there, but once you're inside you get this cool music. Ebon Keep also sounds melancholic and works well after you finally come out of that sewer.

I always wondered about the signposts in the forest in that game, I thought there must be a secret "gruelville" hidden somewhere in the game, and "mountains of candy", I was dumb.
