OTA tv has changed so much in the past 20 years. Like I sort of generally stopped watching TV back in the late 90s and now that I'm old I thought "ok well maybe i can watch things on a TV now" and like all the major networks are paid programming all day weekdays & most of sunday. Once upon a time that poo poo was reservered for the 2am->5am slot now it's just "if it's not primetime it's ads," its nuts.

cable tv was commercial-free at first.

my guess is that he was talking about services like Hulu though and the ad space there is just ... like it's completely loving worthless. When you see an ad for a company on Hulu, chances are its because an ad agency somewhere hosed up the ads they ran somewhere desireable and to make up for the fucky-wucky they're running a billion of the ads on Hulu, because Hulu has basically infinite ad inventory (because it's all worthless and no one wants it)

the solution to twitters problem is to tell all advertisers to gently caress off and make their living selling bonus tweet features. $1 to add a 10 second background midi for this tweet. $1 to add a leopard print background to that tweet. TF2 Hat Economy for Twitter. Even introduce SA-style custom titles and purchased immunity from custom titles.

like they will not gross nearly as much but they'll net more because you can get rid of entire cost centers all at once
|

instead of having to go to some shady indian dude, you could just buy likes directly from twitter.com. Cut out the middleman and save!

i mean can you imagine how much people on twitter would pay for immunity from custom titles?
|

Custom Title for youself: $5 Custom Title for others: $10 Immunity from Custom Titles: $1/100 followers

twitter will never do that because no one in any of the larger SV companies will ever admit to the board or to themselves that they will not eventually own the entire earth and will never settle for a smaller goal.

like i get it, you think SA is better than twitter, and i agree. But there are thousands of people out there who would disagree, and they have wallets just like you & me.

in vancouver theyve slapped a lot of taxes on airbnb until they're the same price as hotels, which is as it should be.
|
![]() |
|
airbnb is fine and should exist and if cities have issues with it, as they should, they should make laws about it. Airbnb-like behavior will exist whether it's formalized into a single website or just a mailing list or whatever.
