I might be getting some of the details wrong, but from memory back when Cornette was running OVW (I think), he got upset when Santino came to a show on an off-day with his kid and openly laughed when The Boogeyman tried to menace them. Next time Santino was booked, Cornette confronted him and went off on him for not maintaining kayfabe since Boogeyman was being booked as a scary monster, while Santino said he wanted to make sure his kid felt safe by showing it was all a bit of fun. Cornette got furious and slapped Santino in the face, and I think if I remember right he got (rightly) fired for it.

That said, 2-3 years ago Santino met Cornette at some convention and evidently was deliberately trying to goad him into losing his temper at him and I believe the allegation was that Santino was trying to generate some controversy for some show he was doing or something? I'm sketchier on the details on that particular incident so hopefully somebody else can fill them in.

Fullleather, I assume from the bulk of your initial post that kicked this off you were trying to go out of your way not to defend Cornette while also trying to figure out what his mindset was. In the process and your responses you created a pretty bad impression unfortunately, not helped by people being extremely aggressive immediately because I assume they thought you were blaming Sonny Kiss for Cornette having his lovely terrible opinions.

Both sides are now basically arguing past each other at imaginary opponents, it is for the best that everybody just drops the topic and use this thread for its intended purpose of talking about Cornette and not each other.

Why do we talk about Jim Cornette so much that it warrants its own thread?

2 reasons.

1: People kept asking if we could have a Jim Cornette thread so they didn't have to read about Jim Cornette in other threads.
2: We don't have a limit on the number of threads we can have.

Just out of curiosity because I've never thought to ask.... just what the hell classifies something as "an outlaw mud show"? It's professional wrestling so what was "outlaw"? I'm assuming it was somebody who put on a show without clearance from a sports commission back in the days when that was actually needed? Or was it just a term for anybody who wasn't running an NWA affiliate that somehow gained traction?

This, basically. It was someone who wasn't an affiliate of a promotion (NWA, AWA, etc) running a show in another promotion's agreed upon home territory. "Mud Show" derives from those shows unable to book an actual "arena" due to promoters having a stranglehold on those, so often they'd run out of barns or other places.

As much as I enjoy Powerrr, it is kind of hilarious that the NWA ended up being the "outlaw mud show" and that Cornette is now working for one.

I wish I could remember which old wrestler it was who told a story on an old podcast about showing up to some territory on the day of a show as a complete nobody, being big and imposing looking enough that everybody assumed he was just a wrestler. He managed to walk his way into a creative meeting where Bruiser Brody was ready to throw down in a fight with him until one of the bookers bullshitted a,"Oh we were supposed to meet 30 minutes from now!" and escorted him out of the room, told him not to make a fuss and he'd get him on the show that night, and it basically launched his entire career.

From memory his entire mindset going there was,"Hey I'm probably as big as the guys on TV, I wonder if I could be a wrestler too?" and just.... showing up.

It might be a different guy, but that sounds a lot like the story Vader told of how he got into the business, which if I recall did involve showing up at an event and barging into the locker room to demand a job - at which point someone there was quick-witted enough to pretend that he had a pre-existing appointment with the 450lb man who just showed up before punches were exchanged.

That sounds similar enough that I'm sure it was Vader, and I probably heard it on either the Austin podcast or the Jericho one.

Yeah I believe there was a promotion that literally just threw all their old house show tapes out on the curb in boxes, and Cornette found out and rounded them up and took them home, then eventually transferred them to DVD (?) and sold them. From memory they included a bunch of guys who would go on to be big stars just as they were first getting started.

What is the Santino story?

If I remember it right, Santino was working in OVW but had the day off, and took his kid to see one of the shows. The Boogeyman (who was being pushed as a top guy, not a comedy dude) spotted him in the crowd and was growling and menacing him, presumably thinking that Santino would play along. Santino was with his kid though and didn't want them to be scared, so he openly laughed to show it wasn't anything to worry about.

Next time he came in, Cornette apparently just went completely loving off at him about not protecting the business and ruining the Boogeyman's mystique, then up and slapped him across the face. I believe he got fired for it?

As an addendum to all that, apparently a couple of years ago Santino met Cornette at some fan convention and they just chatted normally, but then Santino supposedly tried to deliberately provoke him into blowing up again and was filming it in the hopes of using it to get attention for his school or something, and it was one of the few times when most people felt Cornette was the wronged party.

I gotta agree with Duke Pukem (what a name :allears:) insofar as I think Cornette is bizarrely using wrestling terminology because he's a sad old man long-past relevance who is incapable of viewing the world outside of a wrestling filter. Not that he hasn't been horrifically racist in the past (and probably will be again in the future), but I think he's just being (really, really) stupid here, "mudshow" in relation to a platinum hit that almost topped out the Billboard charts just makes zero loving sense in any context.

Now the song itself rules and Duke Pukem's subjective opinion on that factor is objectively wrong, but that's irrelevant to the greater point :colbert:
