Virginia shot 4 of 25 from 3 and still won by 31 tonight against an admittedly pretty bad team. This will not be a good offensive team and they will not win any titles but it might be the best defense of Tony Bennett’s career and it is going to be so great watching people try to deal with it.

Why wouldn’t it be?

The best part of the first two months of the season is looking at the non-D1 schools that lovely D1 schools schedule as guarantee games to actually get a home game this time of year. For instance, VMI won 96-20 tonight against Christendom College which, if you're blissfully aware, was founded in the 70s on the explicit basis of being a US institution promoting the thought of pro-Franco Catholic fascist Brent Bozell. They have almost 500 students in the whole school, refuse federal funding so they're not subject to Title IX, and have completely sex-segregated dorms, so sounds like a good opponent to take on!

There’s so so many tiny little schools, many of them weirdo fundie ones of one stripe or another, and they all apparently have basketball teams and that’s enough to get them onto the radar of large-scale universities.

oystertoadfish posted:maybe I'm biased but I think the UMBC one in the tournament, a 16 beating a 1, was the biggest upset of the decade By cold numbers alone, this is the biggest of the Kenpom era. UMBC was a better team playing at a neutral site, so they had about a 3% chance as against the 0.2% chance of SFA winning at Duke. But in context, sure, breaking the 16 vs. 1 streak is the biggest, especially since no one will care about this game in March.

NC State pissed away a double-digit lead at a decent Greensboro team and looked like they were headed for an OT they would probably lose. UNC lost at home to a bad Georgia Tech team and I’m clinging to how bad they are because it distracts me from how State is gonna have to fire Keatts and start all over again BBC and the cycle will never end. Also Florida State won at Louisville and they’re looking really dangerous? But I think the ACC as a whole is just a mess this year, and not in the too-good title-winning way.

Whole lotta ranked teams going down again today. Tournament this year is going to be an utter bloodbath, should be great so long as it doesn’t clear a path for Duke to win. Also UNC got blown out at Pitt, is now below .500, and is 89th in Kenpom so that’s pretty hilarious too. elentar fucked around with this message at 21:06 on Jan 18, 2020 |

It really looks like Bennett was counting on having Kyle Guy back this year, and probably would’ve if they hadn’t won the title. Obviously that’s a trade you’d make every time but it’s still a serious fuckup not bringing in at least one more pure shooter. Woldetensae so far is not getting the job done.

Keatts has a good class coming in next year, so he won't get fired even if NC State misses the tournament in the weakest ACC in ages (especially since they're gonna have to fire the football coach next year and you really don't want your two highest-profile searches running concurrently). Still, it'd put way more pressure on next season than there probably needs to be. At least the women's team is kicking rear end.
