In WW2 it was out on maneuvers during Pearl Harbor, got to be the Pacific fleet for a while.

Apparently my grandfather was a deck carpenter. They literally would have to re-build the landing deck for planes mid-battle as it got shot-up/bombed/crashed into. They used wood. Easier to store, lighter than steel, easier to hustle, you just have to hustle more often.
