My current computer: i7 - 3930k Sandy Bridge E CPU Noctua NH D14 cooler 32 gigs of DDR3 RAM 1.5tb of SSD space nVidia 1080 GPU Very old Dell U2311H pair of monitors I'll be buying a decent 144hz+ freesync monitor shortly. 1. Does my 3930K bottleneck me for games like the upcoming Doom Eternal? 2. Is it worth selling the 3930k cpu/ram/mobo combo and buying a Ryzen 3600 cpu/ram/mobo combo?

Absorbs Smaller Goons posted:I went from haswell (i5 4670k) to zen2 (r5 3600) with great 3600 CAS 16 ram and kept my 1060 6GB. Everything I've thrown at it runs great, ryzen coupled with fast ram is a great combo. Thanks mate, this is helpful. Regarding DDR4 ram for the ryzen 3600: I'll definitely getting some 3600mhz or higher ram, but I am curious about the timings. Does 18-22-22-42 sound ok, for example? Should I get better timing-ed RAM, for game performance?

Klyith posted:C18 3600 and C16 3200 is generally identical ram with different numbers stored in XMP & printed on the box. (18*1/3600 = 16*1/3200) Thanks. So this RAM here should be fine then? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/32gb-2x16gb-corsair-ddr4-vengeance-lpx-black-pc4-28800-3600-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-18-22-22-42-135v

Klyith posted:this 3200 set is the same stuff and a few bucks cheaper -- that's what I was getting at with the previous post. you can run most C16 3200 at 3600 just by dropping the timings to match. Thanks, appreciate it. I may just get the 3600 one at 6 quid more, since I don't want to bother messing with timings.

Thinking about maaaaybe getting a 3600 AMD CPU which has 6 cores... but what's the next step up in terms of cores? If it helps to know, I won't be OCing.

H110Hawk posted:I think for my own sanity I'm going to "future proof" the nuc with an i7 or i5. My FIL thinks computers cost $2000 anyways and he expects them to last effectively forever and no amount of re-education will stick. Any glaring flaws in this logic other than literally wasting $200 over the i5? I decided I'm not going to throw the dice on the i3 even though it's almost certainly all he needs. By doing this you’re volunteering to janitor your FIL’s computer. Don’t do this.
