When you have a lot of K'NEX pieces it scratches that OCD itch worse than using Q-Tips in The Forbidden Manner. Start with a circle piece, put a bunch of the same connector piece in every slot, attach some random piece to every single one of the connector pieces, and keep building a big beautiful perfectly symmetric HRNG.

I had that there big ball factory when I was a kid. I want to play with it right now. There are some connections that rival 2 flat piece legos, in terms of fingertip-busting inseparability.

I had one of the rollercoaster versions. I spent hours building the drat thing and the track wouldnt even connect to itself when I finished it.

When I was a kid I had these weird off-brand things that essentially had lego studs on one side and poorly-working knex attachment points on the other. It worked hilariously poorly, but I do remember spending hours trying to make structures that actually leveraged the different attributes, but most of the time it just broke at the interconnects. So what I'm saying is go find those poor kids a box of those janky compatibility devices and don't get them either toy it connects to.

I had a huge box of k'nex when i was a kid that poo poo rules. One of them was like a big roller coaster thing you could build and the other was a like 6 foot tall tower with a track for a ball to roll down, it was awesome. I bet that stuff would cost like $300 now though if it's anything like lego.

OP, K'nex definitely owns. My dad and I built a big tower crane powered by rubber bands and gears with the little K'nex motor it came with and it was a blast and picked up a surprising mount of weight. I think he still has it assembled in storage at his house. What I'm saying is I think my dad bought it more for himself than me, but that's just how much K'Nex kicks rear end. Edit: Looking at the box the OP posted it seems like was designed to show every item that would make a 7-12 year old go wild. Dinosaurs, helicopters, cars!!!

I thought k'nex sucked when I was a kid, but that's probably because I had a whole lot of LEGO™ and relatively few k'nex. You can't build anything cool with k'nex until you have enough of 'em to make a functional rubber band rifle. Anything you make is gonna look like a stupid popsickle-stick project, so they're not good unless whatever you make does something.

I had the original (I think) K'Nex set as a kid and I loved it. It's harder than Lego to come up with your own designs, though, and I mostly recreated the designs they had in the book. Later I had the first roller coaster model they released and the car would not make it through the loop no matter what I did. The newer roller coaster versions seem to be much more functional.
