Spring 1942. The World is at War. Germany has conquered France. America reels from the Japanese surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. Britain 's rallies its colonies to rescue the commonwealth. And now--now Fascism is about to win the war for global dominance because Stalin sunk the entire domestic product of the Soviet Union into developing a battleship.

Beamdog who (along with Harebrained Schemes) plans to acquire the rights to everything I spent my childhood doing, has put together an online PC version of the award winning WW2 boardgame. Axis and Allies is known as the asymmetric board game for people who have graduated from Risk, but aren't ready for chiclets with squares and Xs on them. A&A has more versions than you can count, but this game is based on the 1942 version, released for the 25th Anniversary of the game, with some minor deviations such as automated casualty management for asynchronous play and inclusion of alternate starting positions to make the game more fair.

Axis and Allies can be a thinker's game, and I enjoy talking strategies and tactics. Also, the latest patch introduces ranked play, and I think that warrants a post! This game shines in both supporting hotseat and asynchronous play (just like forums!), and you can have multiple games going on in the background. And, unlike the board game, you don't have to spend twenty minutes looking up the rules on each turn while the UK Player gets bored

:mil101: Tips
The single greatest newbie mistake is to underappreciate infantry, as they are the most efficient defending unit in the game. This isn't a problem as long as the opponent doesn't stack up lots of infantry, but if you find yourself constantly bleeding dry while your opponents are dancing all kinds of expensive units around you, it's probably because you're not using enough infantry.

Depicted: A good turn.

Submarines don't prevent enemy ships from passing through them, so if you're trying to block access to a key position, use a cruiser or a destroyer!

Consider strafing--by attacking the enemy with the intent to retreat, you can put them in a position where it's costly to advance and maybe even afford yourself the opportunity to aggregate your forces by retreating all attacking forces to a single territory!

Remember to check the war log often to see what actually got you to the current board state.

Ask questions! Lets get a goon game going or rant furiously that you can't pick casualties! :umberto:
