I lurked here for years because of LPs, but finally pulled the trigger when I saw SA was actually walking the walk in terms of progressivism, compared to other places. I never bothered with 4chan though, I knew that place was a shithole from the get go.

I'm extremely fortunate that I had enough anti-fascist education as a part of my regular curriculum that the manosphere never took me in, even during my lowest points of loneliness and self-loathing. I think it helped me that I never once thought I deserved anything of any kind, and that the most I could expect from life was being of service to other people who seemed more real than me. SA is a case study on how MINIMAL the level of intervention necessary is to stop a digital community from becoming a literal hive of Nazis. Lowtax is and always has been a terrible person. But you'd get banned for crossing certain lines and so, as toxic as SA has been at points, it never came close to 4chan or 8chan in sheer horror unleashed upon the world.

My SO was involved in the decision to dis-invite Baen Book's publisher as Editor Guest of Honor from this year's Worldcon for refusing to moderate the house forums that have been taken over by Nazis. SA has been our go-to example that moderation is possible on a forum platform. Follow that story if you want to see renowned sci-fi authors make total asses of themselves!

Considering that Baen Books' stable of authors pretty much span the political gamut from far-right to outright neo-Nazi that doesn't surprise me at all. I always found it funny that like their one non-right author (Eric Flint) is also an outright communist. Robert, Baen Books might be a good topic for a future episode, I'm sure they were responsible for turning a LOT of nerds to the far-right in the 80s and 90s, and could work as a way to talk about the absurd right-wing extremism of the standard military-SF/space opera genre in general.

This is the thing that kept me at SA one I finally got here (I was not a fan in 1999 or so when the jerk quotient was pretty high). Even on somewhat serious sports boards full of phds, the discourse readily turned to garbage without the little 10 dollar hurdle you had to jump.

It took years before I subscribed to the forum, though, and it loving scared me back then. I remember seeing threads were people were mocked for saying they wouldn't want to shoot a burglar and make sure he was dead. Others were ironically admiring some lunatic who had shot a teenager dead who had keyed his BMW. Even later with the Iraq war I couldn't believe how many people were for it, I remember even zack parson writing he was against it and Lowtax was a bit more to the right, but that maybe everyone could have a balanced opinion and watch CNN as well as FOX. Things like that made me visit these forums (or fora, as Robert calls them) very selectively. It changed a lot, probably because the right wingers left for more extreme hangouts. which was a positive thing for this place, but on the other hand, the impressionable kids dropped in the chans or at the mercy of youtube algorithms are less likely to come out somewhat sane on the other end.

I got lucky in that my first online community was a bunch of nerds talking about fighting games and the obscure corner of Usenet that was devoted to crossover fanfiction between them. There were some real winners in there, but none of them were even fascist-adjacent. Fast-forward a couple of years and the community was much more about those nerds than the ostensible topic. I didn't end up on SA until much later, when a buddy (shout-out to David "hermanos" Brothers, ex-BSS mod) told me that it was worth the $10.

I fell into niche sprite comic message boards in the early aughts before finding RPG spaces and being convinced to join SA specifically because it a space where I could call someone an rear end in a top hat when I thought they were being an rear end in a top hat, and I was finally old and confident enough to see the appeal of that. finally listened to the sigma male video and the one thing that struck me about the videos was how similar they are to alot of the dumb rear end lore/theory videos i watch at times. just weird sounding europian dudes trying to sound academic and flowery like robert caro or david mccullough but talking about chaos daemons or why darth vade got a boner when he saw picture or some dumb poo poo like that. except this was about some dumb rear end poo poo about how "lonely is ok because actually your johnny silverhand or something.
