Noted garbage person Steven Seagal has been fined $314,000 by the SEC. Basically what happened was that he started making comments on social media about how great this cryptocurrency called "Bitcoiin2Gen" was and how it was the next best thing in crypto. What he didn't mention was that the company behind the coin was paying him for the endorsement and it turns out that failing to disclose a paid endorsement is illegal. Whoops.

Lmao talk about a reach

He also talked about how deeply hosed up that ex-IDF guy was as a person, but I guess that doesn't count

Also this:

Robert mentions an encounter with someone who had claimed to have served in the Israeli military but who came across as very American, and noted that Americans going to Israel and serving in the military and then, like, deciding that Israel isn't for them and coming back to the US is a thing that happens and did not take the opportunity to segue into a diatribe about Israeli imperialism, meaning he must really love the IDF

At least that's my guess

It's a pretty dumb take IMO

I don't think it is either, but I also think a podcast episode dedicated to "no look this poo poo actually happens in rural America, let's tell some stories 'cause y'all need to understand this" is where you put the foreign policy opinions.

Like, I don't know how Robert feels about Israel one way or the other, but I do know that if he'd taken the time to explain it in that particular episode it would have felt pretty out of place

Agreed on all points.

It wouldn’t be out of place or out of character for Robert to pause and just stress that he is opposed to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territories and their open-air prison system is a reprehensible war crime. That would actually be, uh, pretty on brand and sort of the thing I’ve come to expect from him.

He's mentioned his opposition to the constant war criming that Israel gets up to many times before, I don't think he has to pause the show to denounce Israel and their crimes against humanity every single time he says the word Israel or anything.

1. This guy absolutely did not serve in the IDF

2. He was a dangerously unhinged person

I have been to so many gun shows since I was a kid and have met so many weird fuckers who claim military service they never did. Special Forces or Green Berets is pretty common, but I have met a handful of people who tell everyone they were in the IDF, despite never going further than 30miles from the town they were born in. They're usually just cringy assholes who need to feel that others respect them, but some are genuinely dangerous people like this dude.

I really doubt anyone who was ever in the IDF would be into BUDK knives and swords, hell I grew out of my BUDK knife phase by the time I was 15, and I have zero military experience at all. A BUDK knife collection is a huge red flag for a grown man to have, but there's a small chance he's just some not-as-dangerous dirtbag who's always drinking warm beer and hitting a gigantic dirty gravity bong made of a store brand soda 2L bottle, who is also totally down to shoot shotguns off the back porch.

I really want to get a good in-depth episode about U-Line (massive business supply company) and the hyperconservative family that owns it, and how they bought a town, and donate shitloads of money to all the worst people in US politics. The guys from the Street Fight Radio podcast, Brett Payne and Bryan Quinby, have done a good bit of material about U-Line and that family, but it's in bits and pieces across over a dozen different episodes. They'd be great guests to bring on for that topic if you decided to do it.

Robert, have you thought about doing episodes in a reverse format, where the guest comes in and tells you about a bastard? It seems to me that if you did, like, two of those a year it'd be A) an occasional break for you when things like 'I need to go cover protests' happens, B) an occasional treat for your listeners, and C) a great way for you to get into bastards that might not fit your usual range of interests. I'd love to hear an episode on Walter Breen, for instance, because the utter bastardy that early SF/Fantasy fandom was shot through with is something a lot of people don't know about, but I have no idea if that's a topic you'd want to research - but if you get someone else to research it, well...

I think having the Street Fight Radio guys on as guests would be a fantastic way to do an episode or two about U-Line, the business supply company, and the weird hyperconservative family that runs it, and also bought a town. They've been covering U-Line stuff for years, it would be a fantastic crossover episode

I suggest Ontario Knife Company machetes. They're very well made and last a very long time. Also the blade is a bit thicker than many stamped steel machetes, so it can handle heavier duty use too, like chopping trees down in addition to cutting through brush, and light splitting work.

I would challenge anyone ITT who uses “irony” to try and explain away what you don’t like about certain podcasts to actually explain what you think that word means or how it applies.

There’s this weird tendency on the left, especially among Biden-style progressives, to stylize or sensationalize anyone who uses comedy as “ironic” or “irony-poisoned” in a way to delegitimize the socialist ideas that serve as the undercurrent. The right/conservatives don’t give a gently caress about “irony-poisoning” it’s exclusively the perview of leftist infighting, something Warren-stans and K-Hive and Biden Boosters like to throw at anyone whose more radical or progressive than they are.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, “ironic” about Chapo. They are sincere in their position, they present their takes as plainly as can be, they believe in what they are saying, and using “irony” in this incredibly popularized-but-still-incorrect way only works to try and paint their ideas as jokes or insincere.

Another way of thinking about it: How is Chapo Trap House “ironic” in any way that Cody and Robert aren’t? Wouldn’t you categorize all of Robert’s jokes about “the fine products at Raytheon” or the glib way he laughs off history’s greatest horror or Cody’s... I mean if you hate “Irony” than how can you stand to watch even one second of Even More News?

Not trying to flame anyone or start a fight, I just think people throw that word around because they read it online and assume it’s part of the discourse now but I feel like no one ever stops to consider what they are saying when they say it.

I think a lot of people have a tendency to use "ironic" when they really mean "sarcastic", and I've seen some people do exactly that when talking about Chapo being irony-poisoned.

edit: I don't listen to chapo trap house

Does anyone have any opinions on who the best cohosts/ones to avoid are? I've only listened to a few episodes and so far Propaganda and Paul F Tomkins stand out as good (engaging with the topic, their input is funny/interesting), but most recently I was trying to listen to the crypto episodes and Sofiya Alexandra makes it pretty unlistenable, she seems to just keep talking over Robert and repeating her own jokes without really engaging with the topic much.

Sofiya is perfectly fine in other episodes in my opinion. IDK what it was about the crypto episodes, but she kinda seemed like she was more than a little zooted going into it.

edit: but Billy Wayne Davis is probably my favorite cohost from the entire series history.
