Very useful on the planet Delphon, where they communicate with their eyebrows
Home computers in the eighties used mainly 5 1/4" disks. 8" disks only showed up in business or academic settings. My high school had a Wang 220B computer that I learned BASIC on and had a dual 8" disk drive the size of a dishwasher. It could be a lot of boring financial data or someone's research paper.
