nfts in short:

- dumb smart contracts usually on ethereum
- nft itself is just a token that is traded, with the smart contract dictating how to translate the nft into its asset
- this can be as simple as "url = http:// lovely.art.website/dogshit.asp?turd={token}"
- there is no actual information about what the "asset" is. no checksum, no version, nothing. at any point the destination could end up vanishing, getting redirected, or simply being replaced by a turd emoji
- the actual act of turning nfts into a "visible" asset is mostly handled by api requests to opensea, which means that opensea is now a centralized nft resolver, and has already used this position to ban people pointing out the above point + their handling (lol) of copyright claims

an nft is a desktop shortcut that costs you $800 to interact with in almost any way, except even dumber because it's not even an actual shortcut, it's just a number that another program has to look at and go "oh desktop shortcut 7 is supposed to go to notepad.exe"

nfts serve literally zero practical purpose other than its use as a scam. everyone involved with them is either already in on it, hoping to get in on the ground floor, or an actual idiot

I've yet to see a shill explain anything about multi-game NFTs other than spouting off about decentralization and owning your game items. it's not even clear to me what people expect (is it supposed to be an identical item? similar? different but linked to the NFT?) but nobody's trying to explain how it would function or why game studios would bother other than unbounded greed

that's of course on top of the myriad things that make NFTs stupid in general

The only practical way to have NFTs shared between games would be to keep them as jpegs and use them as custom spray tags in multiplayer fps games. At least it would be if that didn't stop being a thing almost 2 decades ago, because it couldn't be moderated and people used it to spam porn or shock pictures. But then again recreating the mistakes of the past is the only thing crypto does well.

i've seen people claim that because custom spray tags were easy to implement, custom hats would be just as easy

no one can give a coherent explanation of how cross-game nft items would work because the entire concept requires knowing literally nothing about how games work

Zamujasa

easy. your custom hat nft is a standardized model format that is turned into a flat jpeg, rendered by a poorly implemented 3d preview service, and goes next to your name tag

it's "in game" now. presto.

there is no coherent explanation because such a thing does not and will not ever exist

Buttcoin is a decentralized peer-to-peer digital butt. It's not a social network, and not a porn site. Buttcoin's purpose is to enable buttcoin users to share digital butt pics with each other with little or no fee. Buttcoin's developers say buttcoin is the future of butt selfies and butt-chatting. Its creators say "we want more to butt, we do not want porn". The butt in question consists only of three little coins - you should add butt to your bitcoin wallet now. But if you have the guts to buy butt coins yourself (we dare you), just get the latest and greatest, a fully customizable butt skin. And don't forget to vote for buttcoin on Reddit.

nfts for in-game items is positively nostalgic techno-bollocks by the standards of bitcoin, a real throwback to the bubbles of yore: you have a very tiny problem space which you theoretically have a novel solution to ("valve and epic would need to agree some shared infrastructure about ownership if my tf2 hat is to appear in fortnite") and a very large imagination space where you are invited to daydream about having infinite fun in a virtual world where all the other solutions will just fall into place.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these dipshits saw something like Sketchfab (3D model/asset storefront) and went "yeah just do that and have the games download the models automatically".

But they've never actually used a site like that, played with various modeling softwares, tried importing models into different game engines, etc.

Outside of a standardized development pipeline you never really know how a model is going to be treated when it comes to scale, if the animation rigs will be recognized correctly, UVs being misaligned (or the engine using a different kind of rendering system meaning you get an unlit untextured mesh). Game assets are also very different from models for animation renders or still renders.

Hell, at work one time we were developing a very simple VR training "app" (glorified slideshow) and the pipeline for the products we had said it took Maya files natively. We did a set of cubes in different sizes just to be sure the scaling was correct. Nope, our .2m to 2m set of cubes were rendered as big as buildings. Turned out what the vendor meant was "you have to export Maya files for Unity, which it takes natively" which is very different and we didn't even realize the product we had used a Unity plugin to do the final export to the headset we used.

And that kinda stuff is all over the place. Zero percent chance that people will follow best practices and build out their model packages with all the possible components that a given engine will require, in the correct scaling, etc.

Even the most basic "you're a hobbyist who wants to get into 3D modeling" explanation would show how terrible that idea is.

it's basically a revival of the late 90s/mid 2000s magazine standard of "can you imagine how good games would be if all the console manufacturers came together and made a single unified console?" as always ignoring the actual commercial factors of why that would never happen

With how games are distributed today, nobody even fully owns whatever the copy of the game they buy on Steam/GOG/EGS/whatever stupid proprietary marketplace. Perhaps, if blockchain somehow (lol, not possible) allowed me to actually own the copy and gift it or sell it as I see fit, I'd at least get why some gamers could potentially be excited. But it's dumb cosmetics and DLCs with extra steps.

the usual pitch i've seen is it would allow you to re-sell the digital ownership of the games

of course that's totally ignoring that if steam or playstation or any of these storefronts really wanted to, they could do that now without any blockchain nonsense, and they don't because second-hand digital game markets aren't in the interests of publishers/developers/storefronts at all so they're not going to do it with blockchain either
