saw this on an industry news brief
https://newsroom.statefarm.com/blockchain-solution-solves-state-farm-usaa-subrogation-challenge/

quote:

Companies across many industries are using blockchain technology to securely store data and manage transactions. With its unique encryption and security features, blockchain has the potential to affect and transform many industries.
...
Every year, about 75,000 subrogation checks are exchanged between State Farm and USAA. With the move to full production, the companies hope to see other carriers sign-on to participate throughout 2021.
just the dumbest poo poo, do they not know about EFTs

Having done some work on "enterprise blockchain" solutions, this is basically the use case that everyone is chasing after. You're in org A and you work with org B (and maybe org C, D, and E) for a whole lot of cases/claims/whatever, and wouldn't it be nice if you all just had a single shared database that you could use to track all those cases/claims/etc without needing to constantly send each each other updates back-and-forth and hoping nothing ends up out-of-sync. All the data is stored in the shared DB and that becomes the source of truth. (And, at least in theory, the immutable nature of the blockchain means that even if someone goes in and fucks with a record maliciously, you'll be able to know who and be able to see the record in its previous, un-compromised state.)

It's not replacing EFTs or anything (there's on cryptocurrency involved at all). They're also almost always private blockchains, meaning that parties can only join by invitation (usually involving some kind of key exchange). They also almost always use hyperledger fabric, so no environment-ruining proof-of-work consensus.

If blockchain technolgy is ever going to be useful for anything, it'll be for a case like this.

So naturally, you end up with people trying to use blockchain for stuff like:

this already exists for the insurance industry, its called the Arbitration Forums, nearly every major company and most of the smaller ones are members. making a new separate site with only 2 members is stupid

There's no line of money going back to the user so at least it's honest.
