Can't wait for Seattle's first good road freeze. You ever seen an accordion bus play pinball off the sides of two rows of parked cars as it slides sideways down a 14% graded hill road? The city was built on seven great hills, like Rome...

It's pretty rare and it is usually accompanied by a lot of fire and sometimes the flying lid taking the power line with it (being still attached and all) and causing a larger outage and more fire. Usually a protective device will open before a transformer builds enough internal pressure to actually blow up even if there is an internal fault. The windstorm I refer to was a major disaster event that left 1.8 million homes and businesses without power. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanukkah_Eve_windstorm_of_2006 I'm pretty sure, and please bear in mind that I am not totally uneducated, I saw some transformer explosions.

zedprime posted:Did they glow eerie blue while buzzing or wailing until a sudden popbang? That's a normal fault and what they are more or less made to do when wrapped in live cables or there's a transient event cause something's going on just down the line. Both! The overwhelming majority were that lovely blue, and from a distance the popbangs looked like very distant camera flashes. The big orange fireballs were much fewer, and around here were probably tree falls or flying debris impacts. Most of Seattle's electrical infrastructure was well exposed due to the normally very mild weather, and since then a lot of those lines have been buried, substations enclosed, etc in an overall effort to harden against similar storms, which have been becoming more frequent. It's actually worked very well, the neighborhood I'm in now was without power for nearly three weeks after that storm, and outages are now brief and few even in severe weather.

I like how one guy kind of just casually reaches over and tugs on its tail like a lever and the goanna (Asian water monitor?) is released from its mounting brackets, then immediately pings over to the far corner of the shop where you'll spend an hour trying to get it out with a broom. Classic repair work!

I hold the controversial opinion that letting someone's house burn down when you could do something about it is a dick move, and that you shouldn't be a dick. Also I'd do it just to save the pets, who were innocent of this crime.
