In other news, it now appears they are only about 10-15 years away from cloning the thylacine (not 50+ as previously thought). My understanding is they have the DNA, but not the sequence, which is like having several full encyclopedias that are scrambled, and need to be unscrambled. It's possible thanks to supercomputing and quantum computing. But... re-establishing a breeding population in the wild? Not seeing it.

Eastern Brown snakes are our second most venomous snakes (but deadliest because of how common they are) , responsible for 15 of 19 snake bite deaths between 2005 and 2015. my ex nearly stepped on one on a bushwalk one time. the inland taipan is the most toxic however its habitat is so remote people barely encounter them and the only people who seem to get bitten are snake handlers and sciientists studying them. no recorded deaths in a long time (because the people bitten know what to do immediately after being bitten) Sharks are fuckin everywhere theres water, we dont have exclusive rights to sharks unfortunately. Great whites, bull sharks and tiger sharks are near like every major coastal population on earth. saltwater crocodiles are only up north so most of the normal humans that dont like turbo-tropical heat are safe. 57 deaths in 100 years. Other insane animals like the blue-ringed octopus which is probably the absolute worst thing to get bit by (often the bite is not felt, total paralysis within minutes and death by suffocation) theres only been 3 recorded deaths ever. irukandji - the box jelly fish - 70 deaths in 100 years. this one is kinda rad tho because the sting induces a psychological feeling of impending doom while your whole body starts to ache and shut down. its 1cm cubed, good luck spotting that fucker in the ocean. Like we are country full of fuckin idiots (look up Brown Cardigan and Pink Mitsubishis on instagram for video proof of how stupid most of us are) and we are not only surviving, but somehow flourishing. frankly Id rather live with all of the above over living in the US with lunatics toting machine guns but hey, maybe that makes me the crazy one. toggle posted:Didn't 30,000+ die a couple of months ago near cairns from heat exhaustion? a good sign the ecosystem is off kilter when that is happening. god bless I passed through Cairns Airport on my way to Japan and it was 6am, 35 degrees and like 90% humidity. Wasn't the Kakapo once functionally extinct? I seem to remember them being below like 50 birds at one point until some researchers murdered all the feral cats, rats and stoats on one of New Zealand's islands and moved all the birds they could find there.

bird with big dick posted:Nice koala rape video that you seem to have had at your fingertips for no doubt legitimate reasons Females tend to be extremely picky about who they will mate with. They tend to prefer the larger more dominate males (like most animals), but even then, they still might reject the male for little things that turn her off, like smell and things like that. That's one reason Koala populations suffer more... they are not the most prolific breeders. In the captive Koala breeding programs, if the female doesn't want to mate with the male they've selected, they will have a "stud" koala on hand to court the female, then, right when he's about to mount her, they cuck the male and trick the female by quickly replacing him with the one they want her to mate with. I've seen this on some documentary and I'm sure there's probably a youtube vid of this if you really want to see it. I'm not searching for it.

I'm 99% certain I saw the Koala Cuck thing on TV, on something like The Science Channel, Animal Planet, National Geographic, etc. I know it was a long time ago, maybe at least a decade? But I haven't the first clue as to what show it would have been on.

I believe nowadays they have gotten artificial insemination to work in Koalas so that's what they use. Speaking of National Geographic: No, koalas aren't 'functionally extinct'—yet

The Breakfast Sampler posted:is this why koalas have so many STDs? also, I could not find the vid you were talking about. The std thing is due to them all being affected by a koala specific retrovirus that makes them more vulnerable to disease, essentially koala AIDS. The reason they are all infected with the retrovirus is that they have incredibly low genetic diversity, the same issue plaguing the Tasmanian devil (who have such low genetic diversity that they have clonally transmissable cancer). Funnily enough, part of the low genetic diversity is likely due to indigenous activity rather than being entirely caused after colonisation. Early settlers noted that koalas were very rare and seemed to be hunted to near exhaustion by the indigenous population. Colonisation disrupted this hunting such that the koala population actually grew massively such that they were common by the mid-1800s.

Who What Now posted:lmao, this rules. Post more koala facts Koalas survive on eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus leaves are very hard to digest because they're basically wood (sclerophylous, meaning wood leaf in Latin) and filled with eucalyptus oil which is flammable bullshit and not that good to eat. These trees are basically built to burn, leading to the stupid sorts of bush fires that barbeque teddy bears that live in trees. Eucalyptus trees don't really like being eaten so post bush fire they'll start producing cyanide to discourage browsing. So you've got a venereal disease riddled koala, charred and hungry who's food is actively trying to poison him. Hail satan.
