November Recap

First the UFC went back to the cursed arena that is Madison Square Garden in New York City for UFC 244: Masvidal vs Diaz. This card was, in general, all kinds of awesome and worth watching a replay of even if the main event wasn't as great as you'd hope. First on the main card, Kevin Lee murdered Gregor Gillespie via a beautiful headkick KO. Were it not for other strong KO of the Year Contenders this arguably could have won this year. Derrick Lewis and Blagoy Ivanov fought to a decision which wasn't superb in terms of excitement but was a general good man fight that goes to a decision. Lewis won by Split Decision. Next Stephan Thompson edged out Vicente Luque with great kickboxing/karate point fighting and kept the fight easily where he wanted it to be en route to a Unanimous Decision. Darren Till took on Kelvin Gastellum in the co-main event and The Gorilla used his size advantage over Gastellum en route to a decision win and took the time to tell everyone "Fook Yous" for booing the result. Finally in the main event the UFC's Baddest Motherfucker Belt was on the line between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. For the amount of time it lasted it was a great scrap with Masvidal earning a bit more in points due to power and control of the fight but Diaz was beginning to get his momentum going (don't @ me). However after the third round a sizable cut was opening up on Diaz's forehead and working its way to his eye and thus the ringside doctor's declared him unfit to continue medically and called the fight off. Hopefully we get a rematch because honestly, both guys deserve another big payday. Also on the undercard the following happened which helped elevate the card overall. Corey Anderson TKO'd Johnny Walker inside of a round, Edmen Shabayzan KO'd Brad Tavares via headkick, and Jairzinho Rozenstruik finished Andrei Arlovski inside of a round. It's worth rewatching because despite on paper not sounding amazing, overall the card was a good watch.

Next the UFC headed to Moscow, Russia for UFC Fight Night: Magomedsharipov vs Kattar. I missed this fight but in general most people seemed to think this was a boring card in general. Alexander Volkov defeated Greg Hardy via decision that not really shocked many people except that Volkov didn't grab defeat from the jaws of victory. Zabit Magomedsharipov edged out Calvin Kattar in the main event but again, most people didn't think this was an exciting card in general.

Finally the UFC held UFC Fight Night: Blachowicz vs Jacare in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Again this was another Fight Night card that didn't seem to do much for most folks so I'll go over the quick big fights from the night. James Krause got a slick KO over Sergio Moraes on the undercard. Mauricio Rua (somehow still alive and fighting) won a fight against Paul Craig, cementing his legendary status as the Greatest of All LHW Gatekeepers. Jan Blachowicz defeated Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in a decision victory for the main event.

UFC events in December

December will be a tad light with the events, but for one of them UFC decided to jam as much (on paper) awesomeness they can into the month with the other two events being mildly interesting.

First on December 7, the UFC travels all the way too Washington D.C. to host UFC on ESPN: Overeem vs Rozenstruik. Overeem is entering towards the end of his career while Rozenstruik made a bit of a name for himself last month by KOing former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski inside of 1 round. Rozenstruik is also a replacement for Walt Harris who sadly had to withdraw from the bout after his step-daughter went missing in October and was tragically found dead at the end of November. Also on the card will be Marina Rodriguez and Cynthia Cavillo facing off in a Strawweight match, while Ben Rothwell takes on Stefan Struve who is somehow still fighting. Oddly we’re also going to see former title challenger Yana Kunitskaya (who I just assumed was cut after being disposed of by Cyborg) taking on Aspen Ladd in a Bantamweight bout.

Then on December 14th the UFC heads home to Las Vegas for their supplement to the “End of Year” mega card for UFC 245: Usman vs Covington and boy howdy this card is stacked. First up in the main event we finally get to see Colby Covington potentially get his rear end walloped by Kamaru Usman for the Welterweight Championship in a rematch of the Buffet Line Brawl. Australia’s Alexander Volkanovski has the chance to bring home another title to the Australia/New Zealand region as he takes on Featherweight Champion Max Holloway in the co-main event. THEN we have another title fight this time for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship between the genuine Greatest of all Time for Women’s MMA Amanda Nunes (also Bantamweight & Featherweight Champion) and challenger Germaine De Randamie. That’s the top three fights on the card and we haven’t even touched the other bouts: Jose Aldo vs Marlon Moraes at Bantamweight, Urijah Faber taking on Petr Yan at Bantamweight, Mike Perry taking on Geoff Neal, Matt Brown vs Ben Saunders (2009 me is stoked), and then the rest of the card kind of peters out but Jessica Eye is back after her devastating KO loss to Valentina Shevchenko earlier this year as well.

Then finally the UFC heads off to Busan, South Korea for UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs Korean Zombie. The card is a bit on the light side for big names but features a fair number of up and comers. The main event will be title challengers Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung facing off in a Featherweight scrap. Volkan Oezdemir takes on Alexsandar Rakić, and Super Boy Doo Ho Choi taking on Charles Jourdain.

The rest of the year after that is quiet as the UFC will take a break until around mid-January 2020 to enjoy the holidays.

Your Current Champions

Baddest Motherfucker Champion - Jorge Masvidal (35-13)
From the backyard street fights featuring fellow MMA icon Kimbo Slice, Jorge Masvidal has made a living off being as real as real can be. An MMA veteran of 16 years it’s hard to describe Masvidal’s career other than “consistently growing and adapting. Being brought over to the UFC following the Strikeforce purchase, Masvidal was somewhat viewed as a gatekeeper of sorts for the Lightweight and later Welterweight divisions. Losing only to surging title challengers via split decisions, Masvidal changed his approach to fighting ultimately looking to “baptize” his opponents with violent KOs. This change in strategy worked and Masvidal accrued two beautiful KO victories. Following Nate Diaz’s return to the UFC, Diaz called out Masvidal respectfully to fight to see who is the true Badded Motherfucker in the UFC. This gimmick somehow gained traction and an actual belt was made for the winner, which would be determined at UFC 244. The fight was competitive and exciting, with Masvidal taking an early advantage but Diaz working his way back into the fight. However a Doctor’s stoppage resulted in Masvidal being declared the winner via TKO in an anticlimactic fashion, prompting everyone to wish for a rematch to see the full fight play out in its entirety. Masvidal is a great fighter for you to watch the growth of on UFC Fight Pass if you haven’t seen it already.

Men's Heavyweight Champion - Stipe Miocic(19-3)
Having worked his way up to the Heavyweight Championship, Stipe Miocic went on to be the winningest champion in the division amassing a startling title defense record of 3 title defenses. However Stipe’s legacy was stopped short after being knocked out by Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier (who went on to be a Champ-Champ) in the first round of their fight at UFC 226. Miocic disputed the loss, even though he was cleanly knocked out, and lobbied for a rematch. This took a full year to materialize and the whole time while Cormier was riding high as a defending champion in two divisions, Miocic stayed in Cleveland working his argument via Twitter. Eventually the rematch came to be thanks in part to Brock Lesnar using his appeal to the UFC to get a better paycheck off the WWE, making a DC/Lesnar fight disappear. Miocic was put in as a new opponent for Cormier for UFC 241 in 2019, a little over a year after their first meeting. This time however, Miocic went on to get revenge on Cormier and knocked him out following a setup via body punches earning his Heavyweight Title for the second time. Given the state of the UFC Heavyweight division, Miocic’s former opponent Francis Ngannou may be the first challenger for Miocic’s second reign but who knows. Last I heard, Stipe is out with an eye injury but that was a few weeks ago.

Men's Light Heavyweight Champion - Jon Jones (25-1-(1))
Daniel Cormier won the belt initially in May of 2015. After a series of defenses, Cormier lost the title in a rematch against Jon Jones, who himself was stripped afterwards due to testing positive for a PED. Jones eventually settled with USADA after a 15 month investigation. Cormier was reinstated as the champion, before himself being stripped due to being a dual-weight champion and competing more recently at Heavyweight. To determine the new champion, the UFC decided to pit Jon Jones against Alexander Gustafsson in a rematch of their barn burner from 2013. Jones subsequently was able to best Gustafsson and win via third round TKO victory, becoming Light Heavyweight Champion again. Jones recently defeated Thiago Santos but another legal issue has come up for the champion involving assault at a strip club in Albuquerque so maybe Jones will be stripped of the title...again. Jones will possibly face Reyes but some people think a rematch with Santos is warranted.

Men’s Middleweight Champion - Israel Adesanya (18-0)
Israel Adesanya entered the UFC for his first bout on February 11, 2018. In less than a year (by 1 day) he was headlining a UFC PPV, thanks in part to the main event falling out, against Anderson Silva. To say he was a rising star is an understatement and fate seems to be willing to back him on that notion. Following Robert Whittaker getting another injury that put him on the shelf, Whittakers initial opponent Kelvin Gastelum was paired up with Adesanya to determine who would be the Interim Middleweight Champion while Whittaker recovers. At UFC 236 Adesanya was pushed to his limits by Gastelum, but the man known as “The Last Stylebender” showed that he wasn’t all hype and nearly finished Gastelum in the final moments of the fight, which certainly helped him clinch his Unanimous Decision victory and become the UFC Interim Middleweight Champion. His followup performance was that of near perfection as he faced reigning champion Robert Whittaker, who Adesanya KO’d with a solid counter hook in just two rounds. To follow that up he called out Paulo Costa but that seems to be not happening and we may get Yoel Romero’s 3rd attempt at a title for reasons.

Men's Welterweight Champion - Kamaru Usman (15-1)
Debuting in the UFC back in 2015, Usman took a slow and methodical approach towards working his way up the UFC’s Welterweight division en route to a title shot. Running through opponents Damian Maia and Raphael Dos Anjos most recently with dominant performances, Usman earned the opportunity to face Tyron Woodley in Woodley’s fifth title defense. Many presumed that Woodley’s size and power would be too much for The Nigerian Nightmare, but boy were those people wrong. Throughout the entire contest, Usman controlled Woodley easily on his way to a Unanimous Decision victory with Usman winning all five rounds on all three judges scorecards. Woodley essentially never got any offense going throughout a 25 minute fight thanks to Usman’s style of smothering pressure. The next challenger for Usman is to be Colby Covington, because we all really wanted to see a rematch of a Vegas Buffet Line Brawl set for UFC 245.

Men's Lightweight Champion - Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0)
Finally, it's Khabib Time. At the UFC 25th anniversary press conference, it was announced that Conor McGregor would be Nurmagomedov’s first opponent as champion. The bout went down at UFC 229 and, surprising some, Khabib dropped McGregor early in the fight but unsurprisingly relied on his wrestling to keep the Irishman down before submitting him with a crank. Post-fight however, chaos erupted as both teams got into various brawls. Khabib has said he would sit out his suspension, which he did until September before handily schooling Interim Champion Dustin Poirier. We really want Tony vs Khabib to happen at this point and apparently it's happening on April 18, 2020 but we don't know if there are any Tira Missu's or rogue cables that will be in play.

Men's Featherweight Champion - Max Holloway (21-4)
Holloway put together a 9-fight win streak, with several Performance of the Night bonuses, before answering the call to contend for the Interim Featherweight Championship at UFC 206 in December 2016. Taking out Anthony Pettis with a body kick and punches late in the third round, he set himself up for a unification bout against Jose Aldo at UFC 212. At that event in early June 2017, he defeated Aldo in the third round with focused ground and pound, and unified the belts. Frankie Edgar was announced as Holloway's first defense, but with Edgar out with a broken face, the rematch with Jose Aldo Jr took place at UFC 218 in early December 2017. It was a carbon copy of the first match, with Aldo unable to weather the combinations of The Blessed One, this time being stopped in the third round. Holloway was again scheduled to defend against Frankie Edgar in March 2018, however a leg injury to the champion has forced that fight to the co-main with Brian Ortega stepping in. Travesty struck once again as Holloway had to pull out of UFC 226 with “concussion like symptoms.” Ortega vs Holloway was an epic fight that, sadly, saw Ortega be heavily outmatched on the feet but maintain his ability to stay alive for 20 minutes. Holloway won via TKO between the 4th and 5th round after the above posted stylings he put onto T-City. Holloway then fell short in his attempt to win the UFC Interim Lightweight Championship, but nobody things that Holloway is done being a fantastic fighter to watch. Frankie Edgar was next for “Blessed” and despite numerous attempts to win a second title, Edgar just wasn’t enough to put the Hawaiian Jersey Canadian fighter away. Now Holloway will face Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245 in December. Holloway likes to fight it seems.

Men's Bantamweight Champion - Henry Cejudo (15-2)
Having claimed his second UFC Bantamweight Championship TJ Dillashaw accepted the challenge of moving down to the Flyweight division to face Henry Cejudo for the Flyweight title. However things didn’t go as planned and Dillashaw was TKO’d in just under 90 seconds. Things didn’t get better as Dillashaw was then confirmed to have tested positive for EPO in not only that fight but the rematch he had with Cody Garbrandt. With the title vacated, totally of Dillashaw’s own choosing and not UFC punishing him, Cejudo was matched with Marlon Moraes to determine who would be the king of the Bantamweights. After a cringey week of fight hype, mostly on Cejudo’s part, the pair faced off in June of 2019 at UFC 238. Moraes looked to be be dominant in the first round but Cejudo rallied back in the second and third rounds to eventually put away “Magic” Moraes. Now the king of two divisions, Cejudo is very vocal about how he is the greatest combat sport athlete ever. I mean, he has an Olympic Gold Medal and two UFC championships to his name. Clearly he is the greatest and we should just get used to watching his own form of performance art.

Men's Flyweight Champion - Henry Cejudo (15-2)
Having clawed his way back to a second fight against Flyweight Champion Demetrius Johnson, many assumed Cejudo would get dispatched by the champion once again. However, The Messenger was able to take the champion to a decision utilizing his wrestling which some argued Cejudo used more to stall and less to offer offense. Regardless the judges gave the nod to former Olympian who quickly took his first moments as champion to call out the winner of the UFC Bantamweight fight. In a matchup at 125 lbs against Bantamweight Champion TJ Dillashaw, Cejudo took less than a minute to put Dillashaw away. In the aftermath, Cejudo offered a rematch to Dillashaw but this time at 135 lbs. Fate was not kind to the Bantamweight Champion as Dillashaw was flagged by NYSAC & USADA, and the Bantamweight championship was quickly vacated. Cejudo faced Moraes at UFC 238 and became the 4th Champ-Champ and because of that, Dana has decided not to shut down the Flyweight division but can you honestly name the last Flyweight fight that happened on a UFC card?

Women's Featherweight Champion - Amanda Nunes(18-4)
Amanda Nunes claimed the Featherweight Championship with relative ease given the opponent she was facing was the long time problem known as Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. After a quick KO in the first round we’re now left wondering “What is the Featherweight Division really for now that Cyborg is dethroned?” Nunes seems more interested in defending her 135 lbs. belt though we may see a rematch against Cyborg soon. Nunes is going to take her next fight at Bantamweight, which isn’t surprising given that Featherweight is a bit of a joke division.

Women's Bantamweight Champion - Amanda Nunes (18-4)
Nunes headlined UFC 200 in July of 2016, putting a vicious beating on Miesha Tate and securing a rear-naked choke victory in a little over three minutes. She backed this up with a brutal 48-second TKO victory against former Women's Bantamweight Champion and WMMA pioneer Ronda Rousey in late December 2016. Nunes was slated to take on Valentina Shevchenko in a rematch of their March 2016 fight, with that match being moved to UFC 215 in September 2017. Nunes retained by a razor-thin split decision. Her next fight was against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224, which was held this month in Rio de Janeiro. Nunes spent four rounds mauling Pennington, then pounded out a clearly already finished Pennington in the fifth, to retain her Championship. Nunes then faced Cyborg for the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship and much to the surprise of pretty much everyone, beat the long time feared Featherweight with relative ease. With her victory, Nunes became the first two division champion in Women’s UFC History as well as the first Champ-Champ in UFC Women’s History. Nunes was expected to face former champion Holly Holm at UFC 239 but that got changed into Amanda Nunes fighting former UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Germaine de Randamie at UFC 245.

Women’s Flyweight Champion - Valentina Shevchenko(17-3)
The UFC’s Women’s Flyweight title was vacanted after Nicco Montaño failed to make it to the weigh-ins at UFC 228, citing a need to visit the hospital. This, in turn, left her bout with Valentina Shevchenko nullified. Having not fought in roughly 9 months, the UFC decided Montaño was no longer the champion of the division that they just made 10 months ago and instead opted to vacate the title. As a result of this, Shevchenko faced Former Strawweight Champion Joanna (Jędrzejczyk) at UFC 231 winning a clear decision victory. The next opponent for “Bullet” was Jessica Eye at UFC 238, who Shevchenko basically murdered and it was not a fun KO. Seriously, it was pretty heartbreaking if you have an ounce of sympathy in your body. Following this up, “Bullet” faced and avenged a loss to Liz Carmouche in a showdown in South America that nobody really remembers. Who is next is anyone’s guess honestly.

Women's Strawweight Champion - Zhang Weili (20-1)
With the fall of Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Strawweight seemed to be lost with anyone who could serve as a dominant champion. Rose Namajunas had the best run with two bouts as a champion but fell to Jessica Andrade via a powerful slam. So understandably the idea Andrade is the new ruler of the division and would be for a while was held. However Andrade’s reign came rather abruptly short when she took on Zhang Weili in her first defense. The Chinese fighter has been on a tear since arriving in the UFC. Defeating the likes of Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar, the UFC promoted her to be the first challenger as they begin their push further into China’s entertainment market. The gamble paid off as Zhang won in less than a minute. However, Zhang is not just a fluke fighter. She’s been undefeated in 20 fights in a row, with her lone loss being her professional debut back in 2013. Whether or not Zhang can show her dominance going forward is anyone’s guess, as is who her first opponent will be. Zhang has openly called out former champion Joanna so maybe we’ll get that.

Yeah, my wife's Hawaiian and the subject of "why does the Hawaiian flag have the British flag in it?" came up. Short version: the first King Kamehameha was a huge fan of the British Monarchy/Britain and redesigned the flag to show their friendship with Britain. The "so..how does that play with the whole Capt. Cook thing, then?" question gets a "no one knows, we just roll with it."

Marquardt said he knew he’d return to competition just a few months after he walked away from the sport. “The Great,” who retired in part to focus on being a missionary, said God revealed to him that he’d be fighting again.

“Well it’s kind of a crazy story, man, but I had a dream.” Marquardt said. “God spoke to me, and he confirmed it later in the week by two people I’ve never met before and one friend, as well, that basically I’d be fighting again.

“That was it, man. After I retired, I didn’t train for like two months, and I actually started feeling really bad physically. I was like, ‘Oh man, I need to get back in the gym,’ so I started lifting weights, running, sparring and grappling a little bit, and then I had the dream. So basically, when I retired, I thought that that was it, but I haven’t stopped training. I love mixed martial arts. I love doing it. I love competing, but I really didn’t have a huge desire to compete in it. I was just going to train and maybe teach and stuff like that.”

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are Nate Marquardt fans.

It sucks that the brain can’t be analyzed and dissected while the subject is alive.

Eh he's only 33, and kept up relatively well for 3 rounds against the guy who's fighting for the title next weekend, I mostly found it interesting that he seemed to be saying he literally didn't know eating healthy makes you feel better, rather than worse. It's also a very stark turnaround from previously being very vocal about a specific retirement plan.

If Marlon crushes him next weekend I'll re-evaluate I guess.

Until that 2nd paragraph, I thought you were talking about Marquardt, and I was highly confused
