If you're looking for something more grounded you could give Monster a watch. It's a slow burn dramatic thriller, set in mid-nineties Germany, about a surgeon unknowingly saving the life of a serial killer and trying to hunt him down. This thread prompted me to give it a watch and it has been quite good so far. It was created by Naoki Urasawa who won a couple Eisner awards for 20th Century Boys (a fantastic comic).

It gets better after the first 8 episodes or so, though the pedoness gets more sparse, less cliche, and less gratuitous; it gets simultaneously more intense. Pretty much everything Satoshi Kon directed is good and it's anime. Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue, Paprika, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent; all great.

The problem is, a lot of anime productions made the worst mistake you can make, catering to the hardcore fans. Because otaku were willing to pay insane prices for Blu-ray, and merch, they tried going after them more. Eventually, they slowly but surely pushed themselves into the corner with an awful cycle, getting further and further into moeblob shows and nasty "Loli" type crap, as freaks would pay out the rear end for it, and suddenly it's all degenerate poo poo that scares away normal people. Luckily, it seems there's more and more anime that's humorous or critical of current anime trends, slowly making more accessible and good cartoons.
