Well, that helps firm up that Kai's reason for following Sara was actually weirdly sympathetic, but, wow, Dad went from a blank slate to Holy poo poo really fast.

Counterpoint: dude knows things, that are useful to survival. Let's let bygones be bygones, and learn what he knows.

Then kill him.

Based on context and phrasing, it sounds like the "device" she was talking about is something other than the dolls.

It's probably something even more disturbing and creepy. I mean, the very notion of a device that can "heal mental wounds" is pretty creepy even if the thing somehow works properly and was made by a well-intentioned person (which Safalin almost certainly isn't).

Hey, now. She might be genuinely helpful and kind, just really, really awful at it.

In theory anyway, pushing FakeReko will let the actual Reko live, since the redundancy never has a chance to come up. It seems pretty doubtful that's what'll actually happen, though.

I think the issue here is that the deaths make a lot more sense if you know that a) there's a purpose to this thing beyond pure sadism and b) Ranger hates humans and thus is ignoring that purpose. Also, c) the receptionist doll is actually important. We don't find out any of these things until Ranger gets shot in the head. So a lot of this comes out of left field, and it would've helped a lot if we'd known that Ranger envied/hated people earlier. If we'd known about that, well, this wouldn't have been a natural consequence of the choice, but it would've hung together better if it was clear Ranger was off the rails and didn't care about fair play (which the masterminds do, at least nominally).

"Moody pheromones"?

And how does Gin know what those smell like, anyway...?

The creepiest possibility here is that the memo writer is Sara's father, who's been implied to be both involved with the game and to have a disturbing obsession with Sara. He's trying to recreate the original girl by sending Sara through the same events (minus her death, presumably).

So, you know, that's a fun thought.

What a needlessly brutal death. If this is some sort of hosed-up training, what kind of monster is it supposed to turn Sara into?

E: And what sort of risks are they willing to take? AI(?) Sara had, what, a 17% chance of survival? They put this whole thing together with a 5/6 chance that they'd end up killing their prodigy?

Presumably the game has to be real or the training doesn't work.

I've really been wondering what the point is too, and this is the first suggestion that actually does make sense.

This whole game is full of pointlessly elaborate setups to gently caress with people and see how they react. So a form that exists for no other purpose than to have a fun gotcha moment on them in the middle of a chapter-end showdown would be totally plausible.
Yeah, pretty much. There's a larger theme of making the contestants feel like what happens to them is under their control and, by extension, also their fault. See the instructions that could've saved Mishima, giving Sara a device to save Joe, etc... etc...
