Ashford knew Inaros had a plan to reignite conflict, what he was assuming at the time was to throw the rocks at Ceres and Tycho Station, and as soon as he knew he was dead the mission became getting that information out so someone else could have a chance at stopping it. For everything else he was, Ashford during the time we saw him always put the good of the belt/survival of the species ahead of himself.
