I'm three episodes in and it seems like they've made a lot of changes to the fourth book, generally regarded as the weakest in the series, to make it generally better and more dramatic. I appreciate that the Corey guys are able to not only treat the series as an adaptation but a chance to tell the story better.

Binged s4 all in one sitting. Some of the planet stuff dragged but overall I loved it.

For those of you who know, you say this is act 1 of a new story arc. Can you give me some details? If it’s just Earth vs the rest I feel like it loses some of the sci-fi appeal. Feel free to PM me if you think it’s too much book discussion for this thread.

It constitutes one of the biggest plot spoilers in the whole series, so, I wouldn't even try to get any details in thread. Season 5 is going to be mental.

Amos ending spoilers: Amos getting shot and then being okay just kinda because feels just like how it's presented in the book. I'd say it's a remnant of the production cycle that hit the books where, for a time, Cibola Burn was going to the the final one. In that case, Amos was probably going to die there before the series got extended.

Usually when better things or more things come along you start getting perspective on the older stuff. BSG was pretty much all there was for 10 years. Now there's alternatives that show how bad BSG was in hindsight. Nothing wrong with that.

gentle goon, the thing about perspective is that it allows you to appreciate something for the context in which it was in, instead of arguing that a show made in 2009 wasn't as good as one made in 2019 or whatever it is you think lmao

The hard sci-fi, soft sci-fi and science fantasy distinctions are extremely subjective and some part of it is based in 'I like this story, I do not like that one.' Just look at Dune, where you'll find people being able to make strong arguments for any one of those three sub-genres.

my opinions:

-I like the idea of a nerdy crime boss
-with the right actor, I could believe and get into a nerdy disabled white boy as a mob boss
-Jacob Mundell is not that actor.

I can't explain it but he just doesn't have "it." A weird inflection here, a lame movement there, idk. Also Keon Alexander's performance as marco works for me, his theatricality comes off as believably narcissistic, so maybe my acting barometer is just miscalibrated

erich doesn't seem like a crime boss, which is one thing, but he also doesn't seem like someone's who gone through what amos had since they were kids. there's no edge to mundell's performance. i think about the only description we get of erich in the novel is that he has a gut, but he's still kinda threatening and mean. mundell just doesn't have presence.

I was confused as hell about what Amos was doing at first, I thought it was a clunky "you always steer me in the right direction and that's why I'm back!" speech, then he interrupted with "point is, you tried to kill me and now it's all good" and it fell into place and I couldn't stop laughing. Wes is so great.

I also thought Alex's scene was a still, but he also looks super grumpy so I like to think they got him back and said "you're a sex pest, your out, sit here and look into the camera so we can ditch you.

I agree with Amos that going out saving family is a good ending for Alex, and "he died of too much turning" is the lovely death scene Cas Anvar deserves.

you do understand that cas anvar did not actually die in that scene, right?
