Correct me if I'm wrong, but that still allows for a person to exploit the system. They can simply say that they are having issues and continue to pass along pre-purchased bundle leftovers.

Just brainstorming with you here: I'm still not seeing where that would thwart an exploit...just in the sense that how could it be proven? The person can just say they couldn't gift when maybe they could. Banning keys could possibly cripple the train.

I do think we should set a maximum ride cap at minimum money spent. My first thought is to make it allowable to ride the train a maximum of twice each train at minimal spend ($10) and that it must be two different recipients. The minimum buy at $10 is very reasonable and an accessible way for new riders or for people on tight budgets to be able to participate easily. When you have the same person ride after you three times though, in one train ride after you spent $20-$40+ for three of those times, but only ever get gifted up $10 to you by one person, it starts to add up. It feels like some people jump on immediately after you sometimes to take advantage.

The issue that I'm bringing up is that the people who ride for years (many times each year) and gift minimum or next to it over and over and over. At that point it becomes an exploit. Sometimes people will get a person who does that 3-4 times to them each year, (it happened again to me this year) and it's obvious that they have enough money to gift more since they ride so much. They can only gain enormously by their frequency. I've seen a few people basically "pounce" on new blood who gifted reasonably or generously, to get a minimal gift or bundle trash, and then we never see that person again. I'll admit that when I first started the trains years ago I didn't entirely understand the courtesies, but when I did, I stepped it up. I can understand a veteran rider even having to do it once or twice to be able to participate.

I mean, I had to VPN into Belgium, go to Fanatical and buy a Belgium locked key there for my first ride because absolutely loving nothing on the guy's wishlist could be bought Canada->Belgium, the region restrictions have made some countries just a loving pain to do much without finagling and Canada seems it's become one of those.

E: This doesn't have to do with bundle shitdrops, just a note that in some cases for some countries, key workarounds are getting to almost be a necessity.

Hey, it's me, the minimum rider. Sorry about that sklurb, it's partly me actually having a lot of free money this year and partly greed. I've tossed a game your way and will endeavor to ride better in the future.

There is the risk to the train - someone spending 20-30 on a person and getting minimum - but I'm not sure what a good solution is, rules-wise. Especially since a high minimum would have prevented me from ever joining the train in years past when I was near-broke with fun-money.

Thanks very much for the gesture, I appreciated Raft very much.

I agree, that when a person chooses to gift more than minimum there is always a possibility that the person who follows will gift less. I honestly have no issue with that if it happens sometimes. For me, it's just that when a person will ride often at minimum and especially when they ride after the same person a few times. As I mentioned in our PM's on Steam, I don't mind at all if a person rides after me multiple times....I just ask that they balance it out if they do.

I know I have some pangs of frustration - I like the train and the pay-it-forward system, but I also dislike the feeling of being treated as a loot pinata, it drains the fun out of it over time. The region system is annoying, but there are workarounds - and sometimes you just gotta go 'welp' and go to a third-party site to get a key at full price. But that's not the problem - the problem is the gamification that occurs. "Ride for $10, you're guaranteed $10, but there's *a chance at more!*" seems to be the gambler's logic, and that'd be great if we were at a casino, but this is a communal activity, and behaving that way aggressively is antisocial.

First thing that would help is ensuring that everyone has some bare number of things *at the minimum* on their wishlist *every time they ride* - no more of this 'stack a bunch of $1 dlc on the bottom and $25+ stuff on top'.

Second thing that would help is ensuring *full visibility* - everyone knows what everyone is getting and giving.

Thanks for organizing the gift train again, Nettle! I like giving codes sometimes 'cos it feels like I can stretch $10-20 into a nicer gift for someone when sites like GMG or Gamebillet or w/e have better discounts than Steam but I understand if we have to stick to gifting directly next time :ohdear:

I think sklurb and cpunch's suggestions are good, too?

I would also appreciate there not being a complete ban on codes -- I always end the year with a bunch of codes from the Humble Monthly that are for legitimately good games that I don't happen to like or want, and I've enjoyed having the Gift Train as an opportunity to pass them along to people who have those exact games on their wishlists. HOWEVER, to try and stay within the spirit of the enterprise, I make a point of also buying 1 or two extra games direct through Steam. Sometimes those extra games don't cross the $10 threshold on their own, but my hope is that if the recipient is getting the equivalent of $15-25 of games from their wishlist then no feelings have been hurt or trust violated if I haven't necessarily spent $15-25 myself.

I believe one of the most important thing is for the train to remain fair and welcoming to new comers.
I rode a lot this year (*coughs* bye money) but I have luckily only got a few minimum level gifts (one below minimum in my currency but ok in the gifter one with asterioth) this year and they were steam games and I know that some other people really make up for it but I have also noticed some people (not only Strix who has the curtesy to come forward) ride right after someone new/generous came in and it makes me cringe a little because it is not helping bringing new blood in or making them feel like the train is a fun experience.

We are old timers but for new comers the regional difference and makes sure everything is smooth may already be a stressful experience so being badly rewarded for that effort sucks.

The issue is also when a new comer is directly quite generous it's difficult to match them esp if you have already been riding a few times but making sure someone does not just gift them the strict minimum or bundled keys would be nice. So maybe we should higher the minimum to gift to first riders by 50% like you are guarranteed a 15€ game if you ride for (and only for) the first time but who is going to keep track of who is a first rider?

However I agree with others that banning non steam keys may not be the way forward, I had very little troubles with Steam currency difference this year compared to the past (USD/Euro being closer), only with Xander (to whom I could not have been gifting without resorting to an external site key) and StealthArcher who had to go to an external site to gift me. I often receive non steam keys and don't mind as long as it's not just for 2€ games.

Also I also sometimes gift from external sites when there is a big price difference, like if it's 25€ on steam but 20€ elsewhere I think it can please people to get it rather than something else and it only bit me once with sklurb because I had not checked the regional lock on the key but I directly went to steam after.

We could ban keys from bundled games however (humble monthly aside as the games that go there are higher profile), I believe there is a site keeping track of that but again it means making sure you post what you gift/get more than Sent/Got (Xander comes to mind ;) ).
Another option might be to higher the minimum for old timers, like it's the 6th train you ride, hello, your minimum gifting has now risen to 15 but then it'll be harder for addicts like myself to keep riding as often in a few years :P

Your train your rule we'll adapt I guess but I believe highering the minimum to gift has been the best way to deal with frustrations in the train over the years, maybe just raise it by 1€ more again and a new rule just for gifting newcomers would be sufficient?

edit: Oh also make sure people have minimum price games in their wishlist because if you gift for 10€ but only have 20€ games in your wishlist it may be too obviously greedy

Also I'd obviously not be riding the train so much if it was not a fun experience as well and thanks a lot NettleSoup for hosting us every year, I hope you are feeling better and have a great year

As someone from Malaysia, I can definitely say that if it's direct Steam gifts only, I can't ride the train next year since everything here is comparatively dirt cheap (thank you weak ringgit, I guess?) and Steam will block every purchase. Posted about it in my first ride this year.

It's not the most elegant solution, but it's the only one I've got (I did read someone here do some VPN region changing thing but I'm not too familiar with that).

I did my research, tried to find people who I could actually buy games for, checked prices based on Is There Any Deal, and always tried to play it on the safe side when it comes to how much. I'm not rich enough to do big purchases, but I didn't barely skim over the line either. Also made sure to not repeat people; due to when people post and when I check SA, I kept seeing the same few posters being last in the thread.

I never gave any bundle keys and passed it off as riding the train. I did pass a Sanitarium key, because I spied it in someone's wishlist while wondering if I could afford a fourth round (I couldn't). I didn't tell them it was part of the train though, and I didn't post in the thread saying it's my turn. I feel giving off something I just happened to have is against the spirit of the gift train.

But that's me, and I'm just one guy in this train. If the policy works out for everyone in Games as a whole, go for it.

Quick suggestion: Maybe a range will help with the disparity. Like instead of minimum $10, it can be something like between 2020, price range: $15-20. Just a thought.

I think that getting the games you want is more important than how much the gifter originally paid for them. We're already limiting gifting to the wishlist (plus whatever arbitrary further "only the first 10 entries on my wishlist please" the rider imposes) so it's not like anyone is getting random bundle trash.

Nobody cares at all what a person paid for a game. But when that game has a that-day-sale-price of the bare minimum....

As someone who used to gamble the system and has (hopefully, as far as I can tell, etc.) stopped since, I don't think keys are the problem here. I'd suggest calling for transparency instead - Seeing what exactly is being gifted by whom to whom should be enough to form a reputation of sorts.

Regarding keys, bundles have improved a lot in the past couple years and it is entirely possible to obtain a higher-profile game as part of a deal (speaking of and to end this in a better cheer - I found out that I've still got a spare key for complete Hitman: First Season, so if anyone still doesn't have that, feel free to hit me up on Steam for a belated gift), not to mention different sales by different key providers.

I'll agree with this. For all I know, your uncle works at Square Enix or Activision or Bethesda and you can get Final Fantasy/Crash/Wolfenstein for free (just to give some stuff from the top of my Steam wishlist, feel free to substitute for whatever is appropriate). It's still a nice gesture to say "Hey I saw X in your list, here's a code for it, enjoy", compared to what can feel like "Well I've got this thing that's somewhere on your list, and it meets (or they meet, if we're talking multiples) the minimum so here you go"
Personally I tend to ask people before getting the thing, since that brings up some discussion, and it makes me sure that it's going to be enjoyed, which is actually mentioned in the first post as well as being the spirit of the train in the first place:

Nettle Soup posted:

- Communicate with the other person you're gifting to/from, make sure they want what you're giving them! This is meant to be fun and a way of making new friends!

A nice gift is a nice gift, and a nice gift is one that the person will enjoy. It's less a matter of how much you spent on it, and more a matter of putting thought into it, to make it a heartfelt gift. I appreciated Cpunch's Disco Elysium greatly, and it's a great one, but the extra less-than-two-bucks for the Euro Truck paintjobs were included were a great addition as well, and it shows that the Cpunch put some care into it. And it'd have been exactly the same if Cpunch had messaged me with a hello and the same stuff as codes, rather than as Steam gifts, cause it's still A Good Gift.

it's hard to get the letter of the "law" to match the spirit of it, but I don't think that codes per se are the issue, they're more of a symptom

That's a good point - you can argue that gifting Baba is You is a cheap gift as it was like, 12-13 when on sale.... but I will never regret sending one of the best games of 2019 to someone. It's so drat good. Same with sending Invisible Inc, back when the minimum was 5.

Essentially I'd rather gift/receive a fantastic game than an expensive one. Which is to say that more transparency is a good idea.
