Speed Racer is a movie for children. Not in that Pixar way where everyone can enjoy it. It’s a very childish film and it saddens me a bit that people here like it. Zardoz is a cerebral, slow burn. A thematically dense sci fi film that could never get made today.

Much like Snyder, for me the Wachowskis make films that are far more interesting than actually good but have unique auteur voices and distinct styles. Every time a new MCU movie makes a billion dollars we lose one of these kinds of filmmakers so I can't really begrudge your Justice Leagues or Speed Racers even if I don't feel the need to ever revisit them.

TBF I don't think you were going to get avant-garde masterpieces out of the Russo Brothers or Joss Whedon, stylistic guidelines or not. I think James Gunn keeps enough of his style.

While yes, part of it is Disney gobbling up interesting filmmakers and then realizing that they don't conform and chewing them out, I more mean the mid-budget movie is going to be dead in a few years. With all the effort that went into CATS 2019 and what with them putting out a patch for it while it was still in theaters, they really should have gone the extra mile and done the Clue thing where different theaters got different endings with different characters as the Jellicle Choice.
