They can get one of those guys pretty easily with the Grizz pick without moving up I think. Then maybe use one of those later ones on a stash like Bolmaro like Sam has them doing.

I can kind of see the Bazley thing I guess but MPJ and McDaniels are not similar players at all aside from being tall wings. The revisionism on MPJ is so dumb, no one thought he was a bad offensive player! The issue everyone had with him was defense, where he still sucks, and health. For some reason being healthy for one partial season has convinced people that having back surgery before he turned 20 will never cause any problems down the road.

Every player comp I ever heard of him pre-injury had the words "Kevin Durant" jammed in somewhere so the revisionism is indeed wild

I think Garland would be a lot more impressive if he had been allowed to finish his season, he was starting to put numbers up and I was pleased with his progress. He isn't getting the bump most rookie starters get from having a whole half season of garbage time to just collect stats.

The whole narrative about teams passing on him is bad. Denver was pretty much the only team in position to draft him and let him sit a year, they had a stacked roster already, and plenty of cap space, had another team drafted a guy who couldn't sit in a chair during his draft interviews that high they would have been taking a much bigger risk.

I can't figure out what they'd even want in a Hayward deal, especially now that Robert Williams is playable

It's really rare for a team to trade a big FA acquisition like that without the players buy-in. I doubt Hayward goes anywhere.

He was really pretty good for them this year too, so I don't know why they'd feel like they have to move him.

I don't think he's bad I just don't think he'd go ahead on LaMelo on very many boards. He was shooting pretty well once he got settled in, but he's still like a 6'0" guard who didn't do a lot aside from score and it's hard to build around that, especially when you have another one. Their roster construction is very stupid.

tyler bey is very thundery although his 3 point percentage might be too high

They probably do actually like Jaden McDaniels who is a collection of long limbs that only sometimes seems to know how to play basketball

cassius stanley is ACC but he probably has the best vert in the class so he has to be on the thunder board somewhere high

E: Josh Green too but he might go too high

Some draft info in a news dump from Shams Charania at The Athletic. https://theathletic.com/2057813/202..._shared_article

quote:

The NBA and National Basketball Association are planning for a Nov. 18 NBA draft.
...
The NBA is planning a Draft Combine process beginning later this month and in two parts:

— Mid-September to early October: In-market medical exams and on-court drills and virtual interviews.

— Mid-October to Draft date: Teams will be able to conduct in-person interviews with prospects — but no workouts.

Also of note, the NBA and G League, which have already acquired several top prospects such as Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga for the new elite team Ignite, now have significant interest in pursuing top international players prior to their draft year. For example, this would be like if 2020 lottery prospect Killian Hayes played in the G League’s elite program prior to the draft. Hayes is a top prospect after playing professionally in Germany.

That bit at the end is interesting.

Seems like at its best it’d be beneficial to both the European prospects and NBA teams at the expense of the Euro leagues.

As long as you're good enough to actually get minutes you're going to develop way more playing in Europe than on a fake G-League team. It'd be good for someone like Poku whose team was trying to hide him but I don't see how it'd benefit someone like Hayes, at least in terms of his basketball development. Maybe being somewhere where it's easier for NBA people to see you helps your stock, I dunno.

Biggest thing it does is gives players leverage if they are NBA bound. FIBA contracts are better than they were, but its always nice when you aren't locked into contracts with onerous buyouts or the like.

Saric didn't come over for a year because of the buyout, Doncic had a $2mil buyout. NBA salaries have gotten big enough that that buyouts are easier to get around but they are still there and they still kinda suck for the players.

My theory: He wants to go #1. Toss up between him and the other 2 (possibly 3). I think just by showing up and reminding people what he is capable of might generate some sort of recency bias type of thing.
