Good ranting here but the sound loving sucks for something "polished". Mics fuzz out every time they raise their voices.

It's also horribly framed in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable. The 3/4 reverse shots with them centre frame looking ahead at someone never in frame doesn't match with the angles they're sat at and it gets worse when they look directly into the camera. I hate how this feels.

I feel like it got just enough things right to make the things it got wrong comical and not terrible, turning the whole thing into charmingly idiotic schlock. Keanu is Keanu, Dizzy from Starship Troopers is a fine Molly Millions, the whole "the Yakuza are after us!" is so 80s retro.

I honestly don't think there was an original vision, I think they started shooting and tried to find the movie in the edit

but yeah at the very least it went through multiple serious revisions and reshoots before the chopped together day-glo mess with old top 40 songs that released to theaters

I can just picture the uncomfortable glances between people on set who can tell jared leto sucks but don't want to be the one to say it because somebody at the studio thinks this accidental oscar winner's chuuni hot topic bullshit is going to create the buzz that makes the movie. watching it blossom into a nothing performance that ends up almost completely cut from the film is probably loving hilarious

there's probably too much hollywood power brokering tied up to get a really honest version though
like I'm sure Will Smith is the reason that his character is a family man, and they'd never be able to be honest about the movie gradually melting into an edgy guardians of the galaxy rip-off

There's a difference between being a joyless cynic and not condoning terrible, pandering trash. Because there really is a whole bunch of stuff out there, new and old, that isn't trash.

And I mean that seriously. You can and should be critical of the state of the world and how cinema and other art forms have been developing, but if you end up with that "everything sucks and is overrated, we are living in the darkest timeline" attitude I think you need to try to get a different perspective on things, because it isn't going to do you any good.

It massively came across while watching it that it was originally shot as a back-to-back trilogy but some smooth-brained executive decision was made when ~80% of the trilogy was shot that shitcanned most of the already shot material, and forced the editors to shoehorn everything into one movie for some godforsaken reason. Despite there being some genuine hype for the movie and people being actually pretty jazzed about it upon the reveal of its initial promotional bits and pieces, clearly someone at DC or WB felt that the characters and/or plot wouldn't hold up for a trilogy, or the actors' contracts didn't line up with them all being attached to 3 films, or whatever, but the point is that someone made the fuckywucky decision somewhere along the line to force 3 movies worth of material into one thing, and....we got what we got.

TROS felt the exact same, but I really don't want us to talk about St*r W*rs again ITT. Ever.

Actually in the comic a big part of will Smith's characters motivation is his family. Haven't seen SS to see if that matches up but it's a valid take on the source material.

that's not how I remember it

the only things I remember about when it was in preproduction were:
1) people laughing at joker's tattoos
2) jared leto sending used condoms and dead animals to the cast to ~get inside the joker's mindset~ and his castmates being like "yeah he changed the background on my phone, it's uh... terrifying?"
3) the extremely dour-looking, muddy cast photo that goons photoshopped to hell and back
4) all of the promotional material suddenly glowing neon green and pink when the trailer set to bohemian rhapsody dropped and it was the only thing to get a positive response so far

Didn't they completely recut the movie because the trailer was received so well? They let the trailer editors, who were trailer specialists and didn't edit movies, do the whole movie.

I haven't kept up with DC since flashpoint but if you're talking about eddie, it's not that, and if you're talking about zoe, it's not really that either. the pathos is just completely wrong

iirc in the comics he kind of used his double life to act as a guardian angel for zoe, taking out criminals to clean up the neighborhood and poo poo, right?

in the movie being a hitman is like his day job that he's trying to keep separate from his life as a family man. it's just how he makes money. he ends up getting arrested because Batman confronts him when he's in his civvies, and he doesn't want to shoot Batman in front of his daughter. then at the end of the film, the way they try to put a bow on his character is he heartwarmingly teaches his daughter math using bullet trajectories, and that's supposed to be like the reconciliation of his two lives

But then, he's eternally young and Case is cold-blooded as poo poo, so that works also.

Neuromancer will never be made into a movie because every aspect of it has been stolen and used by other media, and it would just come off to audiences as a bonerjam of a bunch of different sci-fi movies that ripped off Neuromancer.

Critics unfamiliar with the source material would call it a "a blend of The Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic, and Max Headroom," or something stupid like that.

I think it's still weirder than all of those. I mean, I dimly recall that they end up on an incest space station after being piloted by space Rastas. Nobody is going to confuse that with The Matrix. But I think Inception showed how you can do VR hacking in a way that's not especially corny.

e: Probably better as a miniseries, though, so the characters have time to breathe.

I want a prestige tv cooking show. A million dollars an episode, luscious shots of food being being prepared, served, and eaten by beautiful people. It will also include a paper-thin plot with a “will they?/won’t they?” subplot between some sexy sauciers. Includes a 45 to 75 minute aftershow podcast with more explicit instructions on how to make the food from the show.

Is it clear yet that I haven’t eaten today?

No, I want it to be more like Doogie Howser, M.D. meets Iron Chef, with some sports and a fuckton of product placement added. I don’t know of any companies selling human meat right now, at least not for certain. For that reason I want to keep cannibalism out of it, at least until it’s profitable.
