lol there's a loving insane blind item on Reddit claiming that Disney deliberately hosed up the editing of TROS to make JJ look bad so that Warner Brothers/D.C. wouldn't pick him up to revive the D.C. movie franchises, because Disney sees that as the biggest threat to their actual cash cow: the MCU.

https://old.reddit.com/r/saltierthancrait/comments/eisnd8/heres_what_ive_been_told_from_a_source_that/

I'm sure JJ didn't get the cut he wanted. But like the edited-in last comment says, it seems like Disney decided to be more hands off for TLJ and to trust the creative people, but then realized they made a mistake. It's an over correction, although if JJ thought that force ghosts of the past showing up and protecting Rey was a good idea, I can't trust that his judgement would have been an improvement.

"Shilling for star wars isn't going to get any clicks if there's no new content for months on end - better gut everything and gently caress the people who worked for us!"

It's genuinely the right business call though. Their deepfake stuff is innovative and fun to watch, they just need to send the impersonators to an improve class. Nerd round tables are an over saturated market and the ones that will survive have the charisma to subsist on a meager patreon and a small indie operation.

Anyone arguing that Plinkett was somehow responsible for people hating the prequels (and thus fueling the current disdain for the sequel trilogy) is being completely disingenuous.

I was 10 when I saw TPM and thought it was pretty good, but it didn't blow me away like the OT did during the re-release two years before. Even at 13 I could tell episode II was garbage.

Being a kid smoothed over the worst parts of TPM in my mind, but I could still tell then that it wasn't as good as I'd thought it would be.

I can see a seed of a good idea in George's crazy Whills plot. If the sequels had had a running plot that had something to do with how the nature of the force includes life on the micro level and that collective entity can effect things on the larger scale, then maybe it could have worked in that boomer, hippie "all life is connected maaaaan" sort of way.

The way he describes it is even worse though. It would have been god awful.

I kind of want to watch picard like I did with the discovery pilot and drink every time I hate it and feel bad about what I'm seeing. But I don't want to have to watch it a second time the next day because I blacked out half way through and couldn't remember what happened.

Lister

Picard was alright. I'm definitely not happy with the canon being poo poo on and important events in the history being glossed over. Maybe it will be good enough, but yeah, when Rich said that he thinks they're lying when the producers said that it's not going to be about action and exploding planets, he was 100% right. Everything with Picard himself was good, but everything else was pretty weak.

The entire driving force of the plot is that "synthetic" lifeforms (who are only explained to have been developed at Daystrom, but not expanded on beyond that in terms of their sentience, role in society, or even appearance) either were hacked, went crazy, or they just "went rogue" and decided to hack the Mars defense system and conduct an attack on Romulan refugees and destroyed the whole surface of the planet. This lead to the federation and other governments to outlaw them completely and undo any rights that had been earned to robot people over the course of the series. But then holographic life still seems to be around and is never mentioned and those are synthetic lifeforms too, so that's totally ignored.

Bottom line is that after this, Picard sees that Starfleet has lost its way. The reporter at the start of the episode frames the questions as anti-Romulan (in regards to the Romulan evacuation: "many believed there were better uses of our resources than aiding the Federation's oldest enemy" you know - in a post-scarcity society that values individual life more than most other things) and asks questions she agreed not to, so I guess that shows the average person is a dick now too. The conservative anti-people-different-from-us allegory is laid on really thick. The franchise has made is clear time and again that the individual can not be confused with the group that they come from and that is all completely undone here.

Afterwards, a young woman who is a robot that can occasionally tap into Jason Borne and hackerman powers has a vision that Picard can help her after she's attacked. They talk - it turns out she's Data's daughter! - she's attacked again and dies - the people attacking her are Romulan! - Picard goes to Daystrom and the scientist is like "yeah everything from Data that went into B4 was lost but this one guy was like 'hey we can take a single neuron from Data and effectively make a second generation but you can only do it in pairs' and then the guy disappeared - the dead girl robot has a sister! - Picard decides to find the second girl because he feels bad that robots are illegal and to respect Data's sacrifice

The special effect looks expensive and good. But I don't care about the actress who play the daughter. I think they cast a sitcom actor instead of someone who is more striking looking, and androidy.

There's a short trek that I didn't see that takes place as the attack is happening but I don't think it actually tells you anything. This is where it's being introduced, so there's nothing else to know about it. There was never any indication that the federation was even able to make any robots in any of the series besides Data. Even the creation of synthetic humanoids by the federation is new to the canon. Who they are, what they do, what they want, where they went - these are all unanswered questions that I guess the series will reveal with time. Or they'll be ignored.

Let's not forget that these critic reviews are based on the first three episodes which are confirmed to just be Picard getting the crew together. They don't actually start the main action of the season until episode four. There's no doubt that it was designed this way, so expect a major downturn in quality at that point and probably a lot less Patrick Stewart in general. He's the one keeping the show above water, but once characters no one gives a poo poo about are introduced, they're going to be having more and more scenes together without Picard and that will drag down the show.

The FNN thing that bothered me the most was stating some people that resources would be better expended elsewhere. What are you talking about? You're in a post-scarcity society. Holy poo poo, I just realized that in disco season 1, Ash/Voq was a secret Klingon until he was "activated" by a code word. Here, Daj is "activated" by a threat and becomes a killing machine because she's a secret synthetic.

These hacks are repeating the exact same plot the series ran through two years ago.

A rogue AI was the bad guy in Season 2 of Discovery, and really how different is that from the "synths" who went nuts on Mars in Picard?

Also, has Star Trek ever had a bunch of "synths" before? There are Soong androids and Mudd's sexbots and not really much else right? But now all of a sudden they were all over the place and in use in ship building?

Part of the problem is that we really have no context for what the synths are. How many are there, where did they come from, what do they look like, what were their functions - all of these are important questions that inform why they could have gone rogue and how they might have been able to conduct a large scale attack on Mars. I doubt we'll get any of this context since the normies won't care and we need to get to the adventuring and nostalgia.

Let's also not forget that the rogue AI bad guy was piss poor and only introduced as the real bad guy behind all the bad poo poo that season about half way through.
