just watch CC if you want, you'll figure out the context. I don't think there's a whole lot to get out of the zeta movies if you haven't already seen zeta. it's too much ground to cover the way they did it, ends up stretched pretty thin

CubeTheory posted:Like 20 hours of my life worse? Really just tryin to make it to Char's Counter Attack with context. I'd say yes, Zeta is better on its own and the movie version truncates a lot of it. CCA lost most of the ties to zeta gundam I believe in production so its more standalone and really only requires knowledge of the original gundam show or movie trilogy to get into. If you want to watch it more go right ahead, you're probably set and you can come back to zeta later if you're feeling more for that.

Other aspects aside, the actual video quality of even Blu-ray rips of Zeta is really disappointing. It's so blurry most of the time. MSG was much, much sharper and it was made 10 years earlier... not that the age has anything to do with it, it's probably either the original medium was low quality to begin with or they hosed up the transfer.

CCA is watchable standalone if you want, but I feel it doesn't work as well if you don't have Char's failed redemption arc to colour it, so I'd still rec watching Zeta first (and like snail and Sharkey said the compilation movies cut out way too much, plus the mix of original and redrawn cuts makes it aesthetically inconsistent).

His statements to police seem to mirror what witnesses claim to have heard him saying, that he believed KyoAni was plagiarizing novels he had written.

There's been a thing going around that the Kyoani arsonist/mass murderer was a 2ch poster who was obsessed with trains, and that a Hibike Euphonium character pairing kept getting confused with a train. I'm deeply skeptical of this. Has this ever been disproven?

We don't really know the extent or specific instance of the supposed plagiarism, but it's thought he may just have submitted some manuscripts to one or two of their contests that never made it far.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/tragedy-an-animation-utopia-picking-up-pieces-wake-a-japanese-massacre-1263818 This piece mentions that he did make a submission - KyoAni claims that it died in the first screening round. If there's any mileage to the guy's claim at all, I imagine it amounts to his manuscript including some cliche that did indeed show up in one of KyoAni's works through sheer ubiquity.

The 1985 and 2005 animation styles are noticeably very different and there's no attempt to make the new footage blend with the older style. The first movie in particular frequently has very jarring transitions between the two. https://imgur.com/87EIjnS https://imgur.com/jzRQOPj The second and third movies deal with the transitions a bit better, and the mecha scenes in general aren't so bad because they aren't as in your face obvious as the character designs looking different

The guys motivations are the product of a diseased mind. Even if every kyoto animation employee knowingly stole his work, there is no justifying it. Discussing his motives and whether they have any basis in fact is a waste of time.

The Zeta movies are really a case of "why didn't they just reanimate everything instead of making it an awkward mix?" because when it looks good, it looks good. It's a shame they just don't really hold up on their own.

At this point I can't help but think that the hard-on for constant slapping in Gundam Zeta and the flimsy justifications for it ("you were lazy", "you were late", "you are acting like a spoiled brat" etc.) must've been a reflection of something in the Japanese culture at the time, right? Otherwise I don't get what the show is trying to impress on the viewer because everyone seems to be on it and approving. It reached ridiculous heights when a guy flew out of a car to bitch slap the MC, proceeded to kick him on ground while everyone else left, and later it got barely a mention. Most people just kinda agreed it was appropriate to the crime of "being lazy". The AEUG are considered protagonists in this story but they're the good guys only when contrasted with literal gangsters playing military dress-up (the Titans). It's mind-boggling that the crew in the MGS was much more professional on the whole that either side in Zeta and most of them were civilians. Is there a justification for this in-universe or is it completely ignored by the characters? Speaking of discrepancies, Char acting surprised at the existence of mobile armor is confusing me because he was literally piloting one at the end of MGS. Also, does Bright or Char ever acknowledge that they spent most of the previous show fighting against each other?
