What's on your mind, Axa?
Happy New Year, Conan Jan. 1st 1979- Jan. 7th, 1979

That teaser tag :allears:

Turan is largely inspired by Turkic states, with a dash of Sassanian Persia in there as well. There was one completed Howard original set there, either The Man-Eaters of Zamboula or Shadows in Zamboula depending on your source. It's... woof. Some big yikes there, though if you can get past its dire depictions of race it's not one of the worst Conan stories. That's always a danger when one loves old pulps. I've heard some arguments that Howard was surprisingly progressive for his time, but man, even if you accept that, surprisingly progressive for the '20s and '30s is pretty loving rough nowadays.

There was also apparently an unfinished fragment set in Turan, finished up by Lin Carter as The Hand of Nergal.

depending how far you want to read into it, this whole story (and rasputin's inclusion on the wall) reflects a ton about the underlying metaphysics of Corto. Rasputin's presence on the wall in part reflects an only sort of symbolic metaphysical immortality as discussed in the story.

I’m having the same supply and logistics questions as others. Leaving aside how this castle without any surrounding farms can survive weeks of isolation, The Huns should just leave this castle alone. They’re likely starving themselves to death trying to keep the siege going. Pre-railroad armies basically need to move and forage to not evaporate from hunger.

I'm kind of a connoisseur of veggie cheesesteaks and I think portabella is a little bit of a second tier filling for cheesesteaks specifically. Also kids can be really weird about mushrooms, I never liked them until I left for college and could cook them for myself.

"Do not attack walled cities" is a really good idea, but not one people like to follow. Starving your sieging force into a stretched line that can be broken by a sallying defender is a classic outcome. They're big fans of traditional warfare.
