How dare you call this Remu masterpiece nonsense? Might as well be one of Shakespeare's sonnets.

quote:

Just a sweet Carolina, just a rockin' little mama
Just leave my baby in old Alabama
Rockin' in the evenin' when the sun goes down
Mean guitar, that's a swingin' old town
Rockin' and a-rollin' just a little while
Ain't got no rollin', ain't got no holdin'

Get on, get on baby, get on
Get on, get on baby, get on
Well, let me be, rock and roll with me

Well, old Alabama, just a sweet Carolina
Just a-rockin' and rollin' may leave town
Got to be a scoogie, lay on my boogie
Let me hear you say you got my hole around
Got to be a scoogie, bing bong bang
Ain't got no rollin', ain't got no holdin'

Get on, get on baby, get on
Get on, get on baby, get on
Well, let me be, rock and roll with me

I don't think its reputation's held up over the years, But at the time, yeah. It was a huge hit, and won a bunch of Oscars including Best Picture/Director -- beating out Goodfellas, which in retrospect, oops.

I've never been irritated or exhausted with Jane's World and I think it's pretty well-drawn, I'm not sure what anybody could find to hate about it other than it being a pretty standard aughts-era strip about hip white people lounging around.

I also want to say that Adam's World is hit or miss for me but I really like that one about joie de vivre. It feels real in a way the strip usually doesn't, the way a parent and kid can be hanging out and casually learning stuff. I like that it shows the kid not knowing something and the dad teaching without making either character into a punchline, instead recognizing those little teaching moments as really rewarding and important.

It's also very nice how Adam only kinda knows the thing he's teaching, too, and admits it, without having it become a big played-out thing. I know this strip is mediocre most of the time but there were enough of these moments in recent memory that I was happy with picking up posting it.

The remarkable thing about Hurriganes was that their singer Remu didn't speak a word of English, and he had to phoentically learn to sing all of their songs. And honestly while they're somewhat corny, they did write a bunch of pretty rocking tunes back in the day.

Here's the rest of Bechdel's intro from the Essential Dykes to Watch Out For (spoiler for nudity):
I'm catching up to the thread after a couple days of not reading it(and continuing to be terrible about posting my comics on time), and thanks again for posting these+the context notes. It's continually fascinating seeing the seeds of some modern ideas in queer culture, and also some ideas that were radical at the time but are mundane or even outdated now.

quote:

(this idea of queer people in general as better is still not super rare and it always bothers me. Stuff about the rarefied nature of trans people in particular always feels kind of alienating to me, an exceptionalism that isn't adequately or meaningfully different from essentialism on the other side. Being trans means that I'm a 33 year old who needs to solicit urgent advice every time I need to buy a bra, I'm not exactly Tiresias the all-knowing over here.
And this is also relateable, just swap out the age and gender in question.
