Bruceski posted:They were worried that their tenant had been killed in a cave-in. I'd be more charitable with that impression if Holbrook hasn't shown that he only brought up the quarantine because he can use it as a source for jokes. Like how the hedgehog forgetting her mask is just a set-up for "haha look i always have my mask on my hidden under my quills" rather than genuinely forgetting because she was worried about her tenant. Or how the weasel just casually takes off her mask to reveal her species. How Wonderful! posted:Yeah, it's funny to me because there are numerous DtWOF strips where Mo is making the exact same argument, and I think it lands better because for one thing Mo as a lesbian has stakes in this issue, and for another there are usually a few other characters on hand to functionally say "shut the gently caress up Mo," which allows Bechdel to make the useful point without committing to didacticism. Other things that DtWOF does better is that not only do Mo's friends tell her to shut up, they also offer counterarguments to help give nuance to the discussion. Bechdel also turns it into a short storyline or brings it up again down the line to explore it some more, so I really feel like she actually cares about the topic. StrixNebulosa posted:fastrack: it feels like they're on zoom calls literally all the time. why. how is that productive. Because Holbrook thinks that checking up on your workers three times a day is a cool and good thing, and that Dethany doing this is somehow different from her abusive boss doing it because Dethany smiles at her

Vargo posted:Wallace quote:By 1846, Darwin had married, started raising a family, and taken up residence in the house he’d call “home” for four decades. He proceeded to spend the next eight years on what became a barnacle project of epic proportions. Day after day, Darwin would toil away in his study, dissecting and classifying his subjects. Soon, the room was overflowing with box upon box of barnacle specimens from all over the globe, delivered to his door by mail. As one might expect, this was hard, monotonous work. “I hate a barnacle as no man ever did before,” Darwin vented, “not even a Sailor in a slow-moving ship.” quote:So, how did all this affect his private life? Well, a weaker marriage might’ve been sorely tested by the stockpiling of lord knows how many barnacles inside the house. But Darwin’s wife and children quickly got used to being around scores of dead crustaceans. Case in point, while visiting a friend’s home, Darwin’s son George was shocked to learn that the boy’s father didn’t have a study. Bewildered, he asked, “But where does he do his barnacles?
