The Rae webcomic is very good and I think the strip can be as well this was just a really rough direction to take from the jump. Hoping it pulls up soon.

Ah, so... Luann comic getting rid of its queer characters, I guess. Pru got put on a bus, now Ann Eiffel is losing her relevance. This is... probably technically better than keeping her around as an abusive bisexual stepmom but they seriously wrote themselves into a no-win situation when your only queer character is a conniving villain using her sexual wiles to snare someone.

The blonde might be Trump's new press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, but I can't find any exact match pictures. There are a lot of similar looking "Fox News blondes". The actor looks REALLY familiar, but I can't place him.

The actor guy reminds me of a young Biden, though I'm sure that's not who he used as a model. Is he digging into his Edge of Adventure refrences now? *edit* (Which would make this a very young Humphrey Bogart.) Ardeem fucked around with this message at 06:06 on Jul 18, 2020 |

Caphi posted:I'm going to regret hearing this story but when was Ann bi? Ann was introduced as the manager of the bookstore where Bernice worked with her boyfriend (whom I vaguely recall being creepily too old for her, but I could be misremembering and it's neither here nor there). Ann was mean to both Bernice and the boyfriend. Initially we were led to believe she was trying to arrange the opportunity to sexually harass the boyfriend, but then, PLOT TWIST, she started sexually harassing Bernice. I believe that storyline (or possibly the one below) was resolved with Corporate shipping Ann off to Paris, because that is what you do if you're a major retail chain and you find out that one of your managers is sexually harassing the underage staff. Later she would reappear as the manager of Weenie World when Brad was working there. She sexually harassed him as well, confirming her bi status and reinforcing that stereotype that bisexual people are insatiable sexual beasts who aggressively want to gently caress everybody. (Until Pru showed up, Ann was the strip's only LGBT character, possibly even the first LGBT character in Luann. She's also super evil. Make of that what you will.)

Putting LGBTQ and leftist issues front and center of your comic is a good thing, but doing it by making your characters say WE ARE LGBTQ AND LEFTIST is extremely clumsy. I acknowledge there's a subset of readers for whom that is enough.

Apparently she was shipped off to Japan, because on a now-defunct site Greg made some commentary about Ann and it's... not great. ![]() I will say, though, that I am pleasantly surprised that the writers aren't actually going down the road of Tiffany having to just accept being miserable for the sake of her father's happiness, nor going with him not believing her and disowning her over Ann. This, however. This is more than great, it's art.

FrumpleOrz posted:Kevin & Kell Aby Eyeshine the cat and Tyler Meadowvole the mouse. Before I begin, I wanna gripe about something. The website for Kevin and Kell has a tag system. You search for a character name, and it brings up all strips that have been tagged with that character, ten at a time, latest first. Useful! Especially if you are doing an archive trawl to refresh your memory while writing about the lore. Except. Because of some programming trickery I don't even want to know about (I'm not a programmer, though I'm sure somebody will enlighten me), when I search for a tag, it comes up with all the strips that have that tag, OR any other tag that is a partial hit. For example: when I did my write-up on Carl, I had to sift trough many strips that included Carla the chameleon. Because "carl" is part of "carla," see. So when I search for "aby," I get also the results for the tag "baby" and let me tell you, there are a lot of strips tagged "baby" holy poo poo you have no idea. I'm already dreading when I'll have to do my write-up on Vin, a Past Important Character, because when I search for him all strips tagged "kevin" come up and there are thousands of those. End gripe. Let's move on. Aby Eyeshine is a housecat and a car mechanic by profession; she used to be a bigshot programmer at Silicon Valley until she found out her boyfriend -- the CEO of the startup she worked at -- was cheating on her, so she cashed out her share in the company and started her auto shop. She first showed up in 2004: Kell and her co-worker Rhonda (a tigress) were stranded when their car broke down, and Aby rescued them by fixing it (after some shenanigans that involved Kell disguising herself as a cat). After Kell was fired from her job Aby hired her as the manager for her garage, and they quickly became friends, remaining on good terms even when Kell went back to her usual hunting job. In 2005 Aby moved next door to the Dewclaw family, and she taught Kell how to speak feline, which involves lots of body language and which turned out to be really useful for Kell to connect with her feline co-workers once she was back at Herd Thinners. (Kell tried to teach Aby canine in return, but Aby couldn't get it as she couldn't extend her tongue far out enough from her mouth, and canine uses that to indicate past tense.) Aby was a recurring character for quite a while, everything that involved cars usually involved an appearance from her; she had lots of brief mini-arcs, she apparently was one of Holbrook's favourite characters for some years. Like the time where she invented an electric motor for vehicles powered by static from the passengers' fur, had it stolen by her ex, and got it back by threatening to throw him to the sharks (literally, lawyers in this universe are all sharks). Aby was single and was literally married to her job (by literally I mean that in 2006 she even had a wedding ceremony between her and her job, I'm not kidding) until in 2012 she met Mark Meadowvole, a rat and racecar pilot (he races his car through hedge mazes to get cheese at the end), and they fell in love despite the slight age difference (in 2012 Aby was 35 and Mark was 28, and yes there was a cougar joke). They were both involved in arcs centering about car racing in 2012-2013, then that whole thing was mostly forgotten except for the occasional joke. Aby is also the sister of Sam Pardus, the coach of Rudy et al's high school hunting team, who changed his name and disguised himself as a leopard so he could get the job and not be discriminated for being domesticated. (We'll get to that.) This led to a funny mini arc where Kell tried to set them up on a blind date; they had a laugh about it, and that was it. Aby and Mark stopped featuring prominently after 2013, until 2018 when Tyler showed up, and I'll switch to him for the rest of the write-up. Tyler Meadowvole is Mark's nephew, and also Mark's only surviving relative; he first appeared in 2018 when Mark was saddled with him after Mark's brother (whom he hadn't seen in years) was eaten by an owl, leaving Tyler orphaned. At first the courts didn't want to release Tyler to Mark's custody because he was cohabiting with predator (Aby), but that was quickly solved when Aby proposed to Mark ("But Aby, you're married to your career!" "My career... Would understand."). After some adjusting (especially on Tyler's part, since he was very distrustful of predators at first, and with good reason), they started living as a family. Tyler is Coney's classmate in elementary school, and he's super into pop culture -- he's made plenty of references to X-Men, Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and so on. He was involved in a few mini-arcs about elementary school and summer camp, but nothing really that notable except for one where a goat kid was prejudiced about him but he managed to make him overcome that. Mostly. One last thing for today: during my archive trawl I came across these strips, and I thought they were nice so I thought I'd share. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mikl fucked around with this message at 15:06 on Jul 18, 2020 |
