i went to a large high school in a major city, and there was nothing of the kind there, either. being nice, or easy to talk to, or fun to be around mattered a lot more than anything else, and if you were quiet and shy, you still had a place, just by not being a douche.

this is probably sacrilegious, but, er, i don’t think “the far side” is that funny. i get that the comic was highly influential in its time, and maybe all the mediocre imitations that followed devalued it. still, the captions feel overwritten; they should have been edited down to be snappier.

the weiner dog packing factory was pretty good, though.

How Wonderful! posted:

I've been busy catching up on work reading yesterday and today but here's the cover to the next volume of Dykes to Watch Out For. Bechdel did really nice full-color illustrations for these-- I never took a picture of the cover of New, Improved!, I'm just realizing, so I'll get on that later as well.

I also got this in the mail, which I'm excited to potentially start posting alongside DtWOF: Cruse's first few issues of Gay Comix were a huge influence on Bechdel, and her encounter with the first collected edition of Wendel in 1985 has been cited by her as the inspiration for moving from gag comics to the serialized Mo narrative. Cruse was also just an excellent, excellent cartoonist who deserves more attention. I want to sit down and read the whole thing first to see if it has aged up well enough but I have high hopes. If I get a minute to spare I'll also be talking up Cruse in more detail over in the queer comics history thread ASAP!
