You must admit that THE BLOOD is creepy, and the story is getting really interesting.

Surgeon's Tales

For about 11 months I've been translating and posting Surgeon's Tales. It's a comic based on Finnish author Zachris Topelius' historical novel that was published originally between 1853 and 1867 (original Swedish language title: Fältskärns berättelser) and not particularly well known outside Finland. The comic itself was published in the 1950s and follows the original text very closely.

Recap:

The story began in 1631 and so far we have followed mostly Kustaa Bertelsköld, a Finnish soldier who turned out to be a bastard son of Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus/Gustav II Adolf. He and his descendants were cursed by his grandfather and blessed by his mother and there is also a magical ring that is said to bring a great fortune for anyone who holds it. It's somewhat ambiguous if magic is real or if it's just God's will, but Bertelsköld becomes a count and a general before he gives an false oath and drowns. The ring is lost, but I'm presuming it appears again soon enough.

The year is now 1671 (I think) and while I haven't read ahead, we will probably start following Kustaa's son Bernhard Bertelsköld who is shown to be a tender-hearted unlike his ambitious father. While the Swedish conquest in Poland didn't work out, they managed to took large regions from Denmark and control most of the Baltic Sea.

Swedish empire in the 1660s (yellow):

And here we go, with even more :words:

I'm sure we will learn more about the Battle of Poltava (1709) before next Christmas, but let's not get ahead of our story.

I'm glad you take the time to do the translation and introduce this to us, it's really interesting.

The idea of the little girl (does she have a name?) getting the golem to braid her hair is charming, as is using a golem as a clothes stand. B&R is really growing on me.

Look at the miserable expression on her face. Do you think Les ever asks her about how things are at work, what she did, how, she's feeling, what her name is? Nope. The sole purpose of her existence is to endure Les' endless whining ("Hollywood wants to make Lisa's Story into a movie again!? waaaah...") and be constantly reminded of how St Lisa was the greatest and best there ever was and she won't loving go away because that giant library of vhs tapes are her phylactery.

She also has to wear a bald wig when she pegs Les during their Deliverance cosplay sessions.

He is absolutely making it a point to not use clip art in this. Look at that "I'm a very serious artist" cross-hatching. At that Picasso-rear end face. At the hosed proportions of the man landing in the third panel.

When James Allen is trying, he draws like a 14-year old. This is him really showing me what's what.

I just wanted to point out the cool-sounding, old-time measurements from Prince Valiant: "The virgate, yardland, or yard of land (Latin: virgāta [terrae]) was an English unit of land. Primarily a measure of tax assessment rather than area, the virgate was usually (but not always) reckoned as 1⁄4 hide and notionally (but seldom exactly) equal to 30 acres. It was equivalent to two of the Danelaw's oxgangs."
