Damnit, I missed Calvin and Hobbes talk. Oh well I guess I'll just put down my 2 cents and move on... The Calvin and Hobbes thing is interesting because it speaks more to the culture of the US than Bill Watterson's political leanings. Is Watterson racist? Probably not in any overtly white nationalist sense, but the culture he grew up in sure was. What some younger people might not understand looking at that comic is that during the 50's and 60's Cowboys and Indians as a genre were incredibly popular. Like, insanely popular. I'm talking superhero movies level of cultural penetration. Literally every kid in America did what Calvin was doing there in some form at some point. And why wouldn't they? Like half the shows they consumed were about cool cowboys having badass gunfights with mean old Indians (played by white people) who were just mad at the cowboys for being too rugged and talented or something. And this idea was repeated on lunch boxes, with toys, in movies and out of the mouths of literally every important social figure you'd come in contact with. It was aggressively ~normal~ in a way that might be very alien to people who grew up with after the internet was a thing and gave kids the ability to question narratives they saw at TV from a very early age. So basically, that strip is Watterson pulling from his own nostalgic childhood, not realizing that these memories he has an emotional attachment to might also have unpleasant elements hidden underneath the surface. Which is a good thing for everybody to understand because I loving promise you that in 30 years half the poo poo we like today will be super problematic in ways we can't imagine because we just haven't had those conversations as a society yet. Take it from somebody who didn't see anything wrong with Ace Ventura when it first came out. This poo poo is sneaky and takes active effort to suss out. *points to the Kids These Days* It will happen to you I tells ye! It will happen to yoooouuuuu! Anyways here's some fun predictions about stuff we will consider problematic in 30 years: Casual glamorization of the rich, othering of the homeless and mentally ill (which we will all be by then), the rampant imperialism in the Marvel movies, that borderline racist Nu Animaniacs episode about Russia, like 5000 depictions of China/Chinese people that will flood the media after America is finally knocked out of it's 1st in the world status, literally anything Zach Snyder has made, any depiction of a trans person made before 2017.
