The other part of this storyline that really bugs me is that she's reading a book at all. Kids don't like reading books, and the Godfather specifically is a book that's not very easy to find. It's famous mainly for being a movie. Which any halfway clever kid could find on the Internet pretty easily just because it's old.

you can get it at any local library. i read it when i was in middle school bc i heard it was a good movie and wanted to be cultured.

honest critique abt zelda: i greatly dislike it. i am unsure how contemporary it is (how old are the strips we're reading now?) bc if these strips are older and are ur-examples of these kind of concepts+ideas being put to paper i guess thats revolutionary but if not then these ideas have been said, done and explored better by literally a billion other better comics by a thousand other women.

How Wonderful! posted:

I want to post an addendum about something I was puzzled about :

A few months ago, when the issue of Bechdel's attitudes towards trans stuff came up, I posted a strip I'd found around online, dated to 1995, about Mo going into a bathroom with a trans woman and having a little learning moment. I have access to all the strips from 1995-1996 now and was surprised to find that this strip wasn't in it; the character of Jillian is mentioned a few times but doesn't show up. Bechdel of course was a pretty prolific cartoonist outside of DtWOF but from what I've seen most of her one-off stuff doesn't directly involve the DtWOF cast (I could be wrong, as we'll see in like, one sentence).

Well in the end it was an extremely easy mystery to solve. It turns out that Bechdel drew the strip in question specifically for Leslie Feinberg's 1996 Transgender Warriors, a pretty seminal book in trans studies, one which, I have to admit, I never cracked open until today. Feinberg's classic memoir Stone Butch Blues was first published by Firebrand in 1993, and in fact Bechdel blurbed it. I'm a little embarrassed that I never knew any of this, and kind of agog that a lot of the cross-talk about Bechdel's history wrt trans stuff skips over it too. Anyway here's a cleaner scan of the strip from Transgender Warriors:

holy cow, ive seen this strip 1000 times and never without the context that it was made for feinberg. that's incredible. yo, how wonderful, thank you for these posts, they're seriously some of the best in this thread. i love reading them and the context you add to them is something i've been deprived of. these strips and the posts are great resources.

This is... this is weird. I don't know what Dick Tracy is supposed to represent here, given that he's shown rushing in with guns blazing, and is also known for murdering bad guys left and right. Are we supposed to take him as a "good cop" for not killing Lio?

this is a very bizarre read of what i thought was a straight forward comic. the reader assumption that dick tracy is on his way to face a dick tracy villain is subverted when the "villain" is a human rights protestor and not a faceless goon. its commentary on who and what is considered a "bad guy" today using tracy as the cop stand in because he's recognizable.

i would prefer not seeing him shoot the kid to demonstrate he is a bastard cop. the message is "ALL cops are bastards" because of how they misframe reality to suit their needs. not "dick tracy is a bastard"

knowing full well what kind of disturbing history lynn johnston has self-confessed to in interviews, i think some of the heat she pulls from posters in here in can be really weird and off-putting. especially when its prying and picking at minutiae like this. i dont think a comic in which the mild observation is "being a mom is a full time job" compares to like...the real things she's done.
