i finally made it through my comic backlog and was going to see if it was cool to try and start posting bloom county since gocomics seemed to have it all, but i see i've already been beaten to the punch. nice! it's pretty nice and the art is cool. sure beats the hell out of a lot of the copy/pasted stuff going on in some of the current zombie strips.

i really hate fort knox for some reason and i can't decide if it's due to it being the same setup literally every single time, the faces that accompany said setup, or the lovely words that change in each panel. it's a masterpiece of banal shittiness

it's odd that even though it's still a comic about dustin being lazy the bar is so low that i can reasonably think it's a vaguely okay joke because it's not hostile to him in some insanely passive-aggressive way

Green Intern posted:I am actually really invested in the end of Retail. I wonder if Stuart was already canned. yeah, i don't think it's some super-amazing comic but it tended to hit pretty well for what it was going for and the artist seems to have the good graces to actually end it instead of letting it drag forever as a zombie strip. something seemed fishy the moment the status quo started getting shaken up and lo and behold they announced it was stopping.

unfortunately i don't think bechdel ever 100% truly got over her weird hangups about trans people. ![]() like i wouldn't say she's out-and-out hateful towards the trans community by any stretch, but i also wouldn't entirely trust her in relation to it. it's a really, incredibly bad book.

why is foob even pretending to act like the 16 year old kid wanting a motorcycle is even remotely reasonable in some effort to try and drive home a stupid point. it should probably begin and end at 'you're literally about to be barely old enough to drive, you are not even remotely mature enough to handle that' like for as petty and weird as it typically is i'm surprised the joke of 'kid wants a motorcycle' has been stretched out past one strip, except until i remember that every situation in the comic is supposed to boil down to 'lynn's family is ungrateful and causes her anxiety' barring the occasional positive one thrown in to maybe try and give off the impression that she actually cares for her family like she's probably supposed to. which we know isn't even true given how she's basically been disowned by everyone around her for varying reasons.

i always kind of enjoy bloom county's look into decades past, over time it seems to evolve a bit as well when more characters are introduced due to the nature of it being like a boarding house and all that. it's why boondocks is also fun to read for me, since by now it's pretty obvious that the writer really let current events of the time come through in the comic. also i went back and read that comic twice ![]() (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

i regret absolutely nothing. i would go back and read the comic a third time if i cared enough to go back in the thread.

bloom county having the boarding house concept was always kind of fun for introducing weird characters that are good for a few jokes and giving them an excuse to hang around while being able to shuffle them out of the door when it was time to move on

someone ask the mark trail dude about literally where the gently caress he's trying to take this because i don't think any of it is coming off the way he would want it to unless he's just fine with this thought of 'hey maybe the guy didn't die lmao wouldn't that be weird. okay let's just leave him in the snow.'

The Bloop posted:Lmao that every skill learned as a child should be applicable to your everyday life as an adult, as though learning practice and patience aren't themselves important. cursive does not serve a purpose that is remotely worth stressing out elementary school kids with by telling them that they're going to have to learn to write that way because it's all that's used in high school and college to the point where the kids with dyslexia and other poo poo basically have anxiety-related breakdowns because they're afraid they'll never be able to get anywhere without it but sure yeah it's entirely like tying shoelaces

i realize there's some better things i could have done in that image i posted and i wanted to write 'gilchrist' on the sicko dude's shirt instead but couldn't get it to look right but i was also using an image edit site instead of something more professional, so, whatever in any case the overt fetishes displayed in newspaper comics baffle me to this day

somehow pru got passive aggressively fridged in a way i didn't know was possible and i can only assume it's because she's gay, and since the usual go-to in media for that is 'dies in the second or third act' i figure they had to come up with something else since it's a daily newspaper comic where death would be very jarring

The Bloop posted:It's more political satire than gag a day yeah, that much will become more obvious as it goes on, too. there's a fair bit of commentary on politics and current goings-ons at the time and it manages to be pretty funny about it for the most part. there's definitely plenty of one-off gags here and there but there's a fair amount of running plotlines to follow through. not that much different than a lot of the current comics, but i guess not everyone expects an older one like that to do it.

i'm glad opus is being introduced in bloom county. now we just need bill the cat and it'll be (mostly) on par with the later runs. oliver's been shown a time or two earlier on already. bill will be a funny addition given the thread since he's about as literal of a garfield parody as you can get.
