Usually I let it slide if it's a little funny or innocuous but this post is pretty weird, and it's a Deliverance joke in 2020!

:wtc:
Why would this joke ever prompt a warning? The poster is making fun of Les' fixation on the cancerwife to the point of making his current partner wear a wig, the poster is not fantasizing himself about the character. (Ok, the Deliverance part was weird)

What's the issue with that Frazz strip? (other than being poo poo as usual)

"Eskimo" is generally considered to be derogatory. It's an Algonquin word used to describe them, not the word this group call themselves. These tribes call themselves Inuit or Yupik, depending on where exactly you're talking about.

Put it this way. I'm thirty six and Canadian, and I was taught when I was eight that "Eskimo" is a rude word because the Inuit do not like being called that. It's maybe not exactly obscene, but it's a little racist.

Ok, I guess that is not widely known in Europe (speaking as an expat with contact with many European nationalities). I think that people just say eskimo and cannot imagine that it is considered problematic.

"Keeping an eye on Foster"? What are you going to do, travel 100 years in the past and admonish him?

Who is her kids daddy!!!???!!!

No, that's not Zelda, that's just some kid fighting with another kid or screaming at the parent.

Zelda

Yeah, we don't think it's super fun to call the parents when the kids are sick either. But our primary focus is the kid's well being and trying to slow down a loving pandemic.

Except that the green snot is more of a kindergarten rule of thumb for signalling a common cold (it is common in Germany as well), and has very little to do with corona, as far as I know. I can understand playing it safe, but I can very well relate to the dread of the phone call in which they send your kid back home for one week or more (god forbid they are coughing, they will literally stay one month at home in the current scenario). The confinement has been a hard time for families.

Is there any place where I can comment on CL9 such that the author sees it? I would like to ask on every single strip "have the twins been taken away by the CPS?"

When I was a kid, I thought this one was a bit out of character for Calvin.

Now I think it's kinda racist.

Oh, shut up

Edit: to elaborate, this strip was made in the 80's, kids used to dress up like indians and cowboys all the time, it's understood that it is part of the past, I need to earn woke points

to elaborate: oh shut up. people used to do all kinds of things "all the time" and examining how we feel about those things now is one of the very best reasons people post old comics itt

Ok, sorry for my angry post. (I'm not owning the libs, I vote extreme-left)
I would be ok with a probation.

What I wanted to express: it feels unfair with our accumulated experience in racial matters to label something as racist when it was decades ago and the person could not know any better (even though there is that example with that guy's mom who knew better), and there is no mean intention towards the affected minority. In particular with Calvin & Hobbes which has an untarnished record in that matter. In the comic it's just Calvin dressed as an indian which people used to do.
What I mean is, yes, the practice was racist (is! In Germany my kids play cowboys and indians in their Kindergarten), but it is part of the past and the comic does not seem to bear any ill-intent. Do you get my point?
Thanks for listening, see you after my probation

Ulf is a weird character. I like him as a cool gay man who is successful at his career, but him calling Leevi hot and pinching his bicep counts as workplace sexual harassment. The way Anja is side-eyeing him in the last panel makes it seem like she thinks so as well.

I find it interesting that, in such an old publication, they insert a gay character whose homossexuality isn't his sole defining trait. He is not a good person in this story - he is in this village to "do a capitalism". He is just much more sophisticated than the people at the village and he can manipulate them very effectively (either for laughs as when people were afraid of his gayness, or more seriously to destroy/appropriate the hard work of the dwellers of this small town).
