EasyEW posted:Honestly, the dude can't draw children and definitely can't write children's dialogue. If there's nothing to give you scale, the only way you can tell this isn't high school is whether Edda's wearing socks or stockings. It's a rare piece of media that actively condemns you for paying close attention. As someone who's been lurking for the past couple of months: Half the time I can't loving tell if McEldowney is doing a comic set in the present or in the past, and I genuinely thought that whole bit about Edda hating the sandwiches was supposed to be an overplayed morning sickness joke, instead of a flashback about bad cooking. There is no warning or indication that he's skipping back and forth through time, and characters talk and behave the exact same ways no matter what age they are. They also, as stated, look uncannily similar. The kids have adult heads pasted on slightly shorter but still adult-proportioned bodies. The only significant difference is hairstyle and clothing. Even if all that is unintended, it highlights his fixation on portraying kids' crushes in the exact same way he portrays their adult romance. I can only hope that the end of the pregnancy arc is within sight, and maybe he'll take a break from being such a creep about Edda and Amos. In conclusion, gently caress you McEldowney, and also Julet Esqu posted:(gently caress you, Batuik) (I swear I read the good comics in this thread too, I just have nothing of substance to say)

F_Shit_Fitzgerald posted:Could be; I had never thought of that. I've always theorized that Dustin's clinically depressed because his family is so unsupportive. If memory's not failing me there was a strip a few months back that addressed this theory: The sister asked Dustin if maybe he had depression, and she almost seemed genuinely concerned... and then when Dustin said that he didn't feel depressed, she dug in with "well you SHOULD" So, to reiterate, Kelley and Parker can eat an entire bucket of poo poo

Julet Esqu posted:Ann was introduced as the manager of the bookstore where Bernice worked with her boyfriend (whom I vaguely recall being creepily too old for her, but I could be misremembering and it's neither here nor there). Ann was mean to both Bernice and the boyfriend. Initially we were led to believe she was trying to arrange the opportunity to sexually harass the boyfriend, but then, PLOT TWIST, she started sexually harassing Bernice. I believe that storyline (or possibly the one below) was resolved with Corporate shipping Ann off to Paris, because that is what you do if you're a major retail chain and you find out that one of your managers is sexually harassing the underage staff. Apparently she was shipped off to Japan, because on a now-defunct site Greg made some commentary about Ann and it's... not great. ![]() I will say, though, that I am pleasantly surprised that the writers aren't actually going down the road of Tiffany having to just accept being miserable for the sake of her father's happiness, nor going with him not believing her and disowning her over Ann. This, however. This is more than great, it's art.

StrixNebulosa posted:According to the FOOB livejournal community where they obsessively post and commentate on everything about the comic daily for years on end: that sunday strip was redrawn and the original just as chilling. You know she's going to hit her child once she's at home. Wait... people still actively use Livejournal in the year 2020? Even after just last month it was revealed LJ covered up a massive password leak? ![]() edit: okay in hindsight that's a bit hypocritical of me given where I'm writing right now Also gently caress Elly and gently caress Lynn, but that just goes without saying

FrumpleOrz posted:On The Fastrack Wait... Admittedly I don't know my Holbrook lore, but the impression I'm getting from this is that she and her husband both work in the same office. And they're just... okay with the fact that they're being forced to live apart solely because their boss is an egomaniac who wants to monitor her employees' personal lives? It's lovely enough that she's quarantined them all in her McMansion, keeping them away from whatever obligations they might have had at home (Kids and pets to feed? Elderly parents to care for? Too bad!), but here she would rather split apart a family than just let them both work their office job from home. Like, this isn't a case of an actual medical professional saying "hey, it's safer if you two live apart due to X reason". This is their employer dictating where they should live, with no timeframe for when she or any other employee will be allowed to leave. So, uh, wasn't there a guy supposed to be trapped by fire outside a cave right now in FW? Or is his slow demise reserved only for the weekend, secondary to Les talking to Lisa 2.0 on a yacht?

The Bloop posted:Then again, as much as you might want to call the Kudliks terrible parents and etc, they haven't kicked Dustin out and Dustin does gently caress around and show up late for everything. He's literally written as irresponsible and a terrible employee, but people defend this fictional character like he is being maligned (almost as if they see themselves in him). Well, yeah, of course if Dustin was a real person he would be more likely to be told "I know things are bad but you're not helping your case at all, here's some advice to get yourself out of the well". But because he is a fictional character, he and the rest of the cast are deliberately written as they are to make some kind of point, which in this case is apparently "unemployment is solely the fault of the worker and their personal dysfunctions". Criticizing Ed is more about criticizing the views he represent and the authors who express them, particularly when they try to portray Ed as a good man of high standard and reputation but also show him treating service workers like poo poo over soda cup sizes or hourly pay rates. I thought this strip was about how great workers were, Kelley+Parker! Also, because I refuse to let it go, the writers used depression as a punchline by dismissing the very idea of it, so gently caress them, they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. I missed For Better or Worse on the first run so I have nothing to really say about it, I'm just hoping the rerun makes it to late stage FOOB ![]() MiracleFlare fucked around with this message at 16:53 on Sep 22, 2020 |
