I really hope Jaana isn't killed off, both she and Mrs. Fothergill from Modestly Blaise are both pretty neat characters.

One of the things I really love about the posting of old comics is seeing phrases you didn't know were that old. Like I didn't know that by 1946 "Zombie" was common enough parlance that "Post-Office Zombies" would work as a joke.

I do like that Gary Larson gives a shout out to Kliban as one of his major inspirations. There was a thread four years ago about Larson that in the middle a bunch of people poo poo on Kliban because for whatever.

Didn't someone post a bit of it a few years ago, or was that just the Klibans cats?

It's an issue I've run into before, while for example trying to get an archive of M, or any other series.

There's nothing like comics kingdom etc for Norwegian/Scandinavian comics. They're usually just hosted by the newspaper that carries them, and only for a few days worth of backlog.

Some might run in physical comics and etc, but outside of maybe getting anthologies and scanning those there aren't really any good options.

If it wasn't for Corona and the renovation of Kulturhuset in Stockholm we'd have "Serieteket" Stockholms Comic library. I considered swinging by a few months ago to see if I could find something cool to show the thread. But also they have some book available for loan as E-books, including three whole Zelda collections https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1017455 , https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1017874 https://biblioteket.stockholm.se/titel/1086098 . Sadly I can't check their quality since I've either forgot my password or been thrown out of the system for inactivity, but maybe I'll brave the Corona wasteland to reactivate it.

I found this image of a slightly older Zelda in black and white and I have to say I love this style. I think the Zelda currently being posted has a cute and appealing line and I like the acting but it lacks the nervous energy this older strip has. Granted I have no idea what anyone is saying, but, you know.

I like how she's willing to really exaggerate and stylize her women characters' body language, and give them that kind of loose, rough dynamism-- a willingness to swing for expressive "ugliness"-- that a lot of male cartoonists save for male characters.
It makes me feel bad about falling off of posting Dykes to Watch Out For. So, let's do this:

Dykes to Watch Out For

Rough translation:

Panel 1:
- Are you crying, what has happened?
- It's so indescribably horrible! The penguin can't find his flock!
He's looking and crying all alone in Antarctica! uhuhuhuh...

Panel 2:
- Is the drat film crew incapable of helping hem?
Unfeeling Frenchmen only smoking hashish in their Canadian Goose jackets! No empathy at all, I'm getting so drat mad!!!

Panel 3:
- You're not having your period soon are you?
- Oh? So whenever a woman is upset it's because of biological hysteria?
sexist!

Panel 4:
Look!, Now the albatross is taking the penguin chick! And the Frenchmen are making snow angels! I'm getting so drat mad!!!

Related to Zelda, I find that it's very prominent with a thing I associate with Swedish comics strips, the stylized ugliness. Maybe it's also common elsewhere but it's something I've associated a lot with Swedish newspaper-style comics strips.

What a loving rear end in a top hat, sure let's make fun of your student and share her personal information to the whole class, that's good behavior coming from the person in authority. Even if you were rear end in a top hat enough to take her phone, once you figured the message was of a private nature, you'd give it back and not even think of saying that out loud.

I don't know when the 180 rule was established but it's pretty interesting to see how Gladys Parker switched perspectives and poses from panel to panel. It feels like a lot more work and is frankly pretty impressive compared to some of the modern comics that are almost copy and pasted between panels.

BTW is there an archive of the Mopsy strips? Gladys Parker is probably one of my favourite cartoonists from this thread.

This is the end of the third book. Surgeon's Tales returns in January. Thanks for reading!

Looks like I have exactly 700 strips left, so I should be able to finish it by the end of the next year.

Looking forward to it, and thanks for posting, it's actually pretty neat and interesting.
