The main thing about "securing" the internet of things that Holbrook is missing is that most of these devices are, in addition to being very poorly secured, going to be loyal to their corporate masters and not to the person who bought them.

I just realized that Holbrook's entire awfulness revolves around his unexamined belief that obviously bad things are Good, Somehow.

I love how successfully terrifying and weird the Groke is.

I suppose somebody could post the Wen-Tack story that was removed from the site if they can find it, if only so that we can try to figure out why Allison decided it "should never have been posted."

Well, the first issue of the new series about Lottie is out now, so you can get your fix there.

Tom Grendel is the sensational character find of whatever year this was.

Right now Allison is posting the continuation of his five-issue series Steeple, which is set in the same Tackleverse, on MWF, but that's probably a job for the Liking Webcomics Thread.

In the interests of science, I wrote to John Allison and just asked him why Wen-Tack was cancelled (and that this thread loves his work). I'll let you know if I get a reply.

Got a letter back from John Allison! He was pleased that people are enjoying the reruns and said the following about Wen-Tack:John Allison posted:In answer to your question, I started the Wen-Tack story when I was writing two comics books a month for Boom, and working on developing a third for another company, which gestated for a long time but never came out. It was a huge amount of work in terms of coming up with ideas. I wanted to keep drawing comics (I had not taken a real break for 20 years) but had no material to draw myself, so I wrote those strips. In isolation, taken singly, some are good work, some bad, some indifferent, but the curve of the writing was steeply downwards - I burned myself out completely. That’s why I took them down, I shouldn’t have made them in the first place.

Evil Mastermind posted:It's like old Dilbert written by someone who's never actually had a job of any kind. I still don't understand why they're working at their boss's house! They're administration! They can work from their own homes! It's pretty explicit that they're doing it because the boss enjoys having them under her thumb and for no other reason.

Meanwhile, if people have been enjoying the Bad Machinery and Bobbins runs here, John Allison has been putting his Scary Go Round collections up on Gumroad as hi-res PDFs, for those who'd prefer not to buy through Comixology.

I'm not sure whether I love or hate what a murderous lunatic Prince Valiant is. I mean, I'm pretty sure I love it, but I'm having a hard time expressing what makes it different from all the murderous lunatics I hate like Dick Tracy and the Phantom.

goatface posted:He's era and theme appropriate, his enemies aren't cartoons and he's not moralizing. Yeah, I think “he’s not moralizing” is the big thing. Phantom and Dick Tracy are both gross because the writers clearly think their heroes are good people and they totally aren’t.

Okay, but now there's like a 100% chance of CHUDs passing around the Milholland strips and claiming that liberals are determined to anyone who won't submit to our mask tyranny.

I feel like early Kevin and Kell works better because things like “Rudy sees Kevin as food” as an actual source of tension and not a basic fact of life that only bigots get worked up about.

The books take a totally different slant on these events with Moomin alone while his family sleeps. It’s very melancholy and seriously where do they get all that jam?
|

So this Moomin story is basically the take on "jocks are just the worst" as written by mid-20th-century Finnish lesbians?

Julet Esqu posted:Sooooo... getting somebody to pay you to solve a problem that you yourself are causing... that's, uh... evil. Right? Holbrook's morality is based on the idea that you aren't allowed to change The Way Things Are, but cheating is perfectly okay.

kidcoelacanth posted:Y'all keep trying to apply metaphor and deeper meaning into Kevin and Kell when there simply has never been any I mean, there's definitely an attempt to write deeper meaning into things, which is why there are panels saying "if these two can put aside their differences, why can't you?" with a picture of Kevin and Kell kissing on top of a pile of the skulls of her victims.
